The Kyle Line is without doubt one of Scotland's great rail journeys, but as you'll see in this video, things don't always go to plan! But I'd say stay tuned until the end to see what all the fuss is about :)
Today the plan is to take a train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, stay overnight in the area, and then retracer my steps back to Inverness the next day. It turns out to be an adventure I didn't quite expect, but fun nevertheless. Join me and enjoy the video!
Filmed on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd November 2022.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

I really like that you show what regular people can expect when travelling, and not just when everything goes to plan. There are a lot of travel vloggers out there that only show super polished perfection where everything is just amazing all the time, but I enjoy your realistic videos a lot more. So don't worry about things not always going to plan. Your videos are always enjoayable.

We are up from Kinross and staying in a wee cottage in Lochcarron and heading around to Plockton, Kishorn (as my late father worked there mid 1870’s on the massive Ninian Concrete oil rig) so wanted to see where he worked and lived. Then over the Bealach Na Ba pass to Applecross. Next day we will be heading to Skye and a wee stop at Eilean Donan Castle on way back to the cottage. On way here we stopped to charge our ev at Achnasheen train station and bought food at The Midge Bite cafe that’s next to the station on the roadside. We can see the trains on the other side of the loch at night because of the interior lights. Please keep up the great clogs Steve. Helping us choose where to venture around bonnie Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

I went on the ferry when I drove down the west coast. I stopped in the Kyle of Lochalsh to fuel up and while sat in the car I realised that the Isle of Skye was across the water. I hopped on the ferry with the car and had a lovely drive around the Isle. I can't believe there's a bridge there now as it was just a vague dream then.

Catching a train to the Kyle is something I do a couple of times a year since moving to a village near Elgin. I first encountered this journey many years ago after watching Michael Palin going from Edinburgh to the Kyle on the BBC TV programme: Great Railway Journeys of the World and was lucky enough to make the journey myself in the eighties. I was staying in Inverness having travelled up from Birmingham to see Jethro Tull at the Eden Court Theatre and found out It was possible to get there and back in a day, so off I went to the station but due to rail works had to catch a bus to Dingwall and meet the train there, so nothing new there Steve! The trip was wonderful, the train, a Class 37 diesel pulled several carriages including one with a specific viewing carriage and platform which cost me £12 extra, if I remember correctly. In those day's of course there was no bridge and thus it required a short ferry journey to Kyleakin which although lasting just a few minutes was none the less exhilarating. I, like you have since walked over the bridge and into Kyleakin and never tire of the breathtaking views on offer, talking of Plockton, I was there earlier this year and it's a scenic delight, by the way Steve, the Plockton Inn does a rather nice pint of Guinness, highly recommended!

I feel Scotrail do themselves no favours - the dirty train windows are a regular feature on both the Kyle and Far North lines despite both dripping in amazing scenery. No catering on board on most (not all) services is another own goal. So much potential to realise so little desire to do so.

And an incident when our skipper wouldn't wait for some tugs & tried to go alongside a refuelling jetty, but hadn't factored the high winds into the equation & stacked the ship into the jetty resulting in an unexpected night ashore in some sleepy village. I've stayed in Lochcarron many times travelling by car and motorbike. I just love Wester Ross. I'm lucky enough to have done a few rail tours with a 2 night stop over in Inverness, that included a trip on the Kyle of Lochalsh and then the Far North line the day after. And you are right it's the best way to travel to enjoy the views and relax. Great video good memories. 🙂

Oh hey, yet another place I know. Dingwall, I almost ended up in Strathpeffer way back in 77. My parents were looking to buy a hotel up that way, long time ago! Mighty pretty spot on the planet!!!! Thanks for the memories once again!!!!

Another great video Steve!! This pulled at my heart strings as We know this part of your beautiful Highlands rearly well. The scenery is truely stunning. It would take us two days to get to Inverness. Flying from Italy to London and then the sleeper ( old and new ) to Inverness and then a rental car to Gairloch . Later Ullappol. We could see clearly Skye from Gairloch. Loved Applecross and Plockton. The scenery though. I remember the first time just stopping the car and stepping out and looking at Lock Maree and the views and thinking is this for real!! Thanks again Steve 👍🏻

Plockton is a lovely place. Lots of great memories. Loved going on Calum's Seal Trips as a wee boy. He'd let me drive the boat. Went on it recently with my dad and he doesn't change (par we all got 15 years older). Is a must for me in Plockton!

A bouncy “bus replacement” is never welcomed, even in a stunning location. You have resilience Steve. Well done. Thank heavens you had a train to return on, and we got to see the real scenery. 👏👏👍😀

Only been once to Kyle of Lochalsh and that was many years ago as part of a special charter train from Cleethorpes (Lincolnshire) to Inverness. Very scenic line. The train cancellation is familiar to me as I travel 5 days a week between Cleethorpes and Doncaster with Trans Pennine Express: this is supposed to be an hourly service but it's not unusual for there to be no trains for several hours. If replacement transport is provided it can be taxis, minibuses or occasionally coaches.
