7:11 If you watch the movie's DVD release with directors commentary you find out that the tournament was completely changed from it's original concept. In the first cut Shrek and the knights battled in a more standard tournament of jousting. However, one day someone in the production crew suggested making it a WWE styled tournament instead. The idea was very well received and got us the more subversive modern wrestling match we got today. Considering how just about everything else in Shrek is made to mock or mess with normal expectations of a fantasy setting, I think the change was nothing short of perfect.
Seeing this video of all the references makes Shrek more appreciated and loved. Also the Shrek 2 PC ost used in here evokes so much nostalgia on the many games I've played on it as a kid!
That'll be 1 style of video on the channel! Far from the most common. It'll largely be reviews, and discussions on a wide range of series. But you bet I'll sprinkle in stuff like this :)
I personally think 1:40 is more of a Dumbo reference, like in the song "When I See An Elephant Fly". You did an amazing job with this video! I learned a lot
I’d comment something insightful but I’m really bad at that so instead I’ll just leave a comment so that the algorithm recommends this video to more people. Good luck on this channel and I’ll be watching every video.
This new channel is amazing. Can you do a video on Shrek 2 If there's any Shrefrences in Shrek 2 please. It's alright if you don't wanna do it and do a different movie
Reference type videos will just be 1 of the video types on this channel. I one more original video coming in a few days, then I'll largely be focussed on transfering over old videos. But I do plan to cover the other Shrek videos in the future!
Top 10 underrated content creators on youtube: 1: This fucking guy (When he's not talking about a flash game or indie game and being carried by the fact that there's a real gap in the market for content about that stuff)
What a great start to a new channel! Cant wait to see what else you do with it! This is a really solid start. Great video, I love your delivery and research!
Eddache is great. We actually made a game jam game together years ago! I had no idea he had a Shrek references video? He must not have titled it as such?
One big reason that is discovered to why Disney has a lot of films where the mother character is killed off or completely gone is missing has to do with the relationship with Walt Disney himself and his mom. He never knew her all that well cause she died when he was very young.
Actually is not wrong the idea of Robin Hood having a French accents: English nobles of the time HAD TO learn foreign languages such as French. It's actually sensable.
That's interesting! But it likely wouldn't override his base accent, right? I have no idea why they decided to make him Monsieur Hood, rather than just Robin Hood? I'm certain there's a story behind that, that I'd love to hear!
@@2leftframes Yeah, I mean, even with this knowledge, I would still go for the accentless. I suppose he maybe was mimicing/parodying a character. Maybe... Pepe Le Pew, from who he was insisting in "saving (and getting) the girl"?
@@2leftframes also, big late on this, but maybe it's just one of the many "misplaced" accents for these character like Puss having a Spanish accent, the Pig having a German one...
In the french version (sung by the same actor, vincent cassel from la haine) Mr Hood sings about how his thrusts are one of a kind and how much he loves to mess up monsters and young virgin girls in lingerie. I AM NOT JOKING
Just noticed a miss: when the angry mob is about to attack Shrek's house, they talk about Ogres can do terrible stuff like "crushing bones and making bread out of them" "actually that's a giant" it's from Jack and the Beanstalk
The Spanish dub has a BUNCH of spanish specific references which is super interesting that you bring up "give him the chair!" since that's my mom's favorite scene.
That was insightful, now ill enjoy more of my childhood movies knowing that they might be referencing something, but it'll still go over my head. Nah, but seriously fam, that was a cool summary of what your casual viewers might have missed From this Classic . We all consume so much through media that we forget the little details of references from the past. A symptom of post modernism i believe. We're all drawing inspiration from fictitious worlds made by people although that affect real emotions.
Amazing first video for the new channel! I'm not sure if anyone else pointed this out yet, but I think the house fly/donkey fly line near the beginning is a throwback to Dumbo's lyrics from When I See an Elephant Fly :)
I was hesitant to subscribe because I'm more picky about movies than I am with games. Buuuut, I wanted to support you and I like most Shrek movies. I just hope this channel won't be full of stuff I don't like (I mostly enjoy animated movies)
There's a very strong chance it'll be filled with stuff you don't like. I don't intend to limit conversations to any genre or style. But hopefully I can keep the videos engaging enough that they still feel worth checking out. But I take no offense if you choose to move on!
I've watched Shrek with my toddler son recently and found out that there actually were a lot of references that I didn't see in 2001 when I was 8 years old. Unfortunatelly, references to English nursery rhymes (Maffin Man, for example) got lost in translation into Russian.
Honestly, Shrek 1 is light on the references compared to the later installments. Shrek 2 has a major reference to the OJ murder case! What the heck, right?!
Oh really? When I try to picture her, my brain instead just goes to Hoodwinked xD And this video was previously on '2 Left Thumbs' alongside my gaming videos
Robin Hood having a French accent makes sense since he comes from the time the Normans ruled England. So everyone from nobility would have been raised speaking French.
Great video!! I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel, sometimes we DO decide our own destiny for I was so amazed rewatching Srek that I NEEDED to know all the references I missed, so while I was hoping someone made video about it, I did not expect much but your work is amazing on this one. Much love!
