The difference is : politics . Egg wasn't very good at that . On the other hand, Jaehaerys brought back the realm from the depth of h.ell and created laws and regulations along with Queen Alisanne. If only a couple of their children survived (the good ones) his line would've been secured and the dance prevented.

@Partidantendan231 you've never seen a map of Westeros then. The Starks ruled the north for 8k years, which is as large as the res combined. The Vale of Arryn, Stormsland, Westerlands, the Reach are all massive kingdoms. They also didn't just rule their house but hundreds of minor and major houses as well. And all of this they did for thousands of years without Dragons. The Targaryen rule was pathetically short and only lasted as long as they did after they lost their dragons because people had gotten used to the idea of Targaryen on the Iron Throne. They could've ousted them anytime but didn't due to traditions which had set in. They're luck that they lasted a whole 100 plus years that they did that due plot armor.

Actually, it is never said that the kingdoms used to fight each other before the Conquest, and some sources say there were very few wars in Westeros during the millennia of independence. During the 300 years of Targaryen rule, however, there was the Dance of Dragons, Blackfyre rebellions, Mad Kings, other wars of succession...

The logic is that it was a civil war, at the start Aegon sat on it, on the end Aegon sat on it. Trystane Truefyre sat on the throne and called himself king with people actually obeying him, but he is not counted as a king.

Rheanyra sat on the throne for 6 months and was literally chased out of the capital by the smallfolk. They also killed one of her sons and her dragon. After that she got herself captured and executed by her brother Aegon. She didn't exactly win anything.

Is Tyrstane Truefyre also a rightful monarch of Westeros? He sat on the Iron Throne and was declared King during the Dance of Dragons. Yet I don’t see anyone arguing for him to be included as one.

Not only is irrelevant if other monarchs denounced her, I don’t remember her son denouncing her. I believe one of the only reasons he didn’t cement her as queen in the history books is because he didn’t want to open old wounds and didn’t want to create a rift between the people who supported the greens and/or blacks.

@Will the Dance wasn't fought over a female heir per se, that was the excuse each side used or ignored at various times as it suited their political ambitions. The Dance was a power struggle over influence between different families, which was made easier by Jaehaerys continuing to muddy the succession order. There might have been a war if he hadn't called the great council, but not if he'd named Rhaenys immediately after her father's death.

There was seemingly a good amount of them left as during the dunk and egg novellas the family apparently had enough to give newborns in the family eggs in hope they would hatch eventually. A lot of attempts were made to bring them back and a lot of a failures, most notably Aegon V accidentally cooking most of his family alive at Summerhall. There is two that did hatch -Morning, which either hatched during or just following the dance. Was healthy and able to be ridden, but either died or disappeared within the next 20 years. If it died it was most likely poisoned by maesters, if not it could still be out there, as there’s actually a few dragons that in theory could still be alive and wild from the dance. -the Last Dragon, which was deformed, small and weak. That one didn’t live very long, but did produce some eggs.
