All the Basses is a project dedicated to showcasing some of the perhaps lesser known basses of years gone by. I do not claim to be a bass historian, I merely want to highlight some of the more interesting aspects of these instruments, and to showcase their tonality.
Low Impedance Pickups is the name of the game here! Les Paul was very forward-thinking when it came to guitar electronics and the world of recording sound. This bass features a really unique, completely passive tone circuit. Coupled with low impedance pickups, the tonal variations you can achieve are bewildering! Did I mention it is also short-scale??

YES!! Thank you for doing such a comprehensive review of this beast! My ‘71 Triumph has flats which help to get the ‘P bass tone’. I have to say though, I just LOVE the growl it gets in position two with both pickups on full (especially with a pick). It slaps surprisingly well too!

You know, for all the talk of Les wanting clear sounds, to my ear this is a woolly stoner/doom machine.

I have the exact same bass. In studios, many people have been flabbergasted by the incredible and unique sound of it. Would love to find a well fitting new case for it though. Any tips?

I have a 1970 model, which is slightly thicker in the body. I use an Epiphone Woody Allen Rumblekat case. It fits well.

YES!!!! Owned one and LOVED it’s live sound!…..Ironically it simply wouldn’t jive with me for actual recording though.

Love this series, so many cool, older basses that don't get enough attention.

Oh man this thing has some jazz bass sounds in phase and some ric sounds out of phase, that's crazy cool, it'd be really cool to see a serek bass with some similar kind of electronics honestly.

In the 70s Gibson Les Pauls (including the basses) had a "pancake" construction with two thinner mahogany body pieces with a thin piece of maple in the middle

The lo-z pickups are stacked Humbuckers. Blade, not pole pieces under the covers. & they each have 8 wires coming off from them, because the tone switch (1-2-3), indicate the winds at which the pickups are tapped (i'd have to find how many turns the windings are tapped at, it's in my documentation). It's a very unique bass, my Dad used to own one, & i wish i had it. I do plan on building one myself, though the pickups are definitely the tricky part of the build.

Great video!!! I've never owned one, but probably played one at my local store when they were in production. I do still have the soundpage that Gibson put out for the Les Paul Recording Guitar and Triumph Bass. I believe someone has uploaded it to RU-vid if you haven't heard it.

I had the pleasure of trying one in NYC Guitar Center. A very fun and lovely bass to play! Remember the neck being super skinny!

You can easily make a cable like the one Gibson used originally, by ripping out the transformer from a beaten up sm57 or sm58 and have the terminals in series with the hot part of a cable, works great for boosting anything
@ChrisHopkinsBass
@ChrisHopkinsBass Год назад
The step up transformer was a Shure microphone adapter to allow newer mics to connect to older equipment.
