Cari, I don't know if you will see this or not but watching your channel during the pandemic is what got me back into reading after not having read anything at all for years. I did the audio book for The Adventures of Amina, and I think the chatting with the scribe feels better in audio than only reading it. You could hear her push the mic away and chat, and then hear her bring it back, I think it was a better audio experience.

The unfortunate thing about the last tale of the flower bride is that people assume the wrong things before reading it. It's not a fantasy, it's not a romance, and the central theme is not marriage but the toxic frendship between indigo and azure. I'm glad you liked it..... it's my favourite book of all time!!

I have a theory that when we read a lot, regularly, our brains kind of parse through the information, remembering what's important, but otherwise... everything gets tossed out. I've gotten into the habit of writing down my book reviews immediately after I finish a book - like, within minutes - whether that's on my computer, or in a notebook, because I promise you by the next day, I will have forgotten everything about that book, including the name and author. I read about 114 books a year, and my brain just cannot hold that information all the time. It doesn't surprise me at all that you forget some of the books you read - I'm glad I'm not the only one!
@astrocytes
@astrocytes Год назад
Your theory is confirmed! I think, lol. Your brain literally decides what goes to short-term memory and long-term memory and what goes... 🕳️ This is why I secretly feel irritated when people get upset at forgetful people. because they are asking someone to consciously do something your BRAIN isn't even doing 😑 I'm referring to small anectdotal things people forget, or import things mentioned on the tail-end of a visit (you switch to a different mindset when they leave, so whatever was said is poof gone) I had to chuckle rereading my sentence: I get angry when people get angry at people who don't care enough to remember things*. *from the perspective of the angry people, that is very useful emotion 🤣

I LOVED reading the Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi! ❤ I used to go to oral story telling festivals and the way the author wrote the story like she was recording an oral narrative brought back some happy memories 🥰
@lauravsthepage

It was my absolute favourite read of the year! I liked the narrative, I do not think it was a story meant to be taken to aggressively seriously and those funny oral story telling moments helped break the tension and keep things fun.

With The Adventures of Amina I'm listening to the audio alongside the book and it's Amina who is telling us her story while the guy keeps interrupting her, I actually love this and wanted more of it. And the guy only narrates the found letters/documents. I do wish the pacing was faster though.

So from my research and an article that I read, S.A. Chakraborty has confirmed that The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi was orinally a standalone, but then she mentioned that she wanted to explore more with the characters, the world-buildimg, etc. so it's definitely going to be a series!😄 Not sure it would be a trilogy or something, but yeah, it's confirmed to be a series now😂

I was watching a frolic through fiction when she read the adventures of Amina al-sirafi and she read it via the audiobook and the way she described it just sounded so immersive and a really interesting way to write the book. so maybe because you only read it physically that's why it was so jarring? I'm not sure but omg all the books you spoke about got me weirdly excited to just sit down and read lots! idk why ahah I think its the way you describe them you're just so fun and passionate that I get excited to read😂

Aaah it’s 1:00 am in my country and here I am 🫣 love your videos, and the longer they are the better. I literally rewatch your videos when I want something casual and comforting to watch 😅 you were one of the very first booktubers I came across and watched last year, so it’s almost nostalgic for me. Anyway, I wanted to recommend the book Ruination. It’s based on a game but I’m not a gamer, nor did I have any background for the story, but I loved the book. I read Sorcery of Thorns after I read Ruination, and it gave me similar feels. Libraries and grimoires… plot is so different but something about it felt similar and I think you’ll enjoy it. PS: do not look up the game because the book is a prequel and the game spoils the ending in a major way. Thank you for the videos!

I really enjoyed it! The cover was what drew me in. The Weyward women have a very strong connection with nature, and that is where they find their power. The cover of The Last Tale of the Flower Bride is what drew me to it but I think I agree about the cover misleading it. I don't really think it is a fantasy book but it is kind of marketed that way, so I think that people would dislike it because it led them astray. I certainly agree about the twists. I absolutely LOVED Weyward. I bought it based on the cover (of course). I think the multiple timeline was done extremely well, and enjoyed the fact that the majority of the witchcraft wasn't spells but more of a strong tie to and understanding of nature (plants, insects, and animals). I think that let the book stay true to its more feminist roots. Like the majority of women throughout history were healers, nurturers and growers which was (mostly accepted) but not always and seen as indecent during many periods (aka Violet with her insects). I"m sad to hear about the Shea Ernshaw book. I just read The Wicked Deep and loved it. I (again) bought it mostly for the cover and immediately bought Winterwood after finishing it.

Cari - I was so glad to see that I was not alone with "I Have Some Questions For You!" I have been so disappointed with the new books that have been coming out during the last few months. I am beginning to think that the Pandemic is to blame for the lower quality of fiction lately. The Authors have gotten slack, and the Editors are getting lazy as well! "I Have Some Questions For You" was very poorly edited! There was so much that could have been skipped, and so much more, as you said, that should have been included! I've read 30 books since the beginning of this year, and so far, only one I would have given a "5 Star" rating!

Please read The Stray Spirit and A Rival Most Vial by R.K. Ashwick. They're both so good and such quick reads. Comfort fiction with lots of humor. (The author is my friend and I am filled with the compulsive need for everyone to read her books. Because they're wonderful!)😊

highly recommend 'Devil House' as a commentary on true crime, i'm not completely finished with it but it seems to hit all the marks as a critique of the genre

The UK cover for the last tale of the flower bride is A LOT better, fits the book much more.

A Wilderness of Stars felt like a fever dream after some things happened. When the "twist" was on its way I was just like: wtf girlie

I know what you mean about the American cover for The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. As Roshani Chokshi's first non-YA novel, the cover should have been more similar to the UK cover (no faces, just trinkets). I'm on the fence about reading it because I wasn't feeling some of the passages I read as I flipped through it at the bookstore. I shall wait for the paperback, I think.

I’m with you on I Have Some Questions For You. The author seemed like all they wanted to do was write the most “woke” story. I ended up skipping about half of part 1 and picking it up again at part 2 just to try and get through it. Thanks for all your insights!

Speaking of Prague! Not sure if I missed it... But have you read Daughter of Smoke and Bone? Part of the story takes place there. One of my favorite YA fantasies.

Love your reviews. Personally I'm put off by multiple POVs and I rarely click with them. Why do you think it's so popular right now?

I wasn’t sure about Shea Ernshaw’s new book, but I think I’ll be staying away from it. I LOVED her book A WICKED DEEP, but then her Adult debut A HISTORY OF WILD PLACES was a total miss for me and very ableist. I’m glad you enjoyed Ryan O’ Connell’s book! I haven’t read it yet, but I loved his TV series SPECIAL (which was a memoir originally). He’s an incredible TV writer and actor. I recommend his TV series! As a writer, reader, and viewer of your channel who has cerebral palsy myself, here are some recommendations of YA books by authors with cerebral palsy: WHERE YOU SEE YOURSELF by Claire Forrest (comes out next month!) LOVE LETTERS FOR JOY by Melissa See (comes out JUNE 6th) YOU, ME, AND OUR HEARTSTRINGS also by Melissa See (this one came out last year) SECRET SUMMER PROMISE by Keah Brown (comes out this summer, I believe) BEING ACE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF QUEER, TRANS, AND DISABLED STORIES OF ASEXUAL LOVE AND CONNECTION edited by Madeline Dyer (comes out in October 2023; I have a thriller story in this anthology featuring a girl with cerebral palsy)

Cari, I have a book recommendation that I think you might like! Have you heard of Thirsty Animals or The Pharmacist? Both by Rachelle Atalla. Best books I’ve read in a long time!!
