Abandoned theme parks, The Pennine Tower, abandoned service stations, scenic views oh and some actual service stations thrown in. What an exciting episode!
I don't think much more introduction is needed, however, join us in this exciting episode of All The Motorway Service Stations where we take in the M6, M65, M61 and M62 motorways with some rather awesome "side quests" along the way.
We are embarking on a journey throughout the UK to visit all 95 motorway service stations that are scattered across our motorway network.
In this episode, we'll be stopping at;
Tebay - Westmorland - M6
Killington Lake - RoadChef - M6
Burton In Kendal - Moto - M6
Lancaster - Moto - M6
Blackburn with Darwen - Extra - M65
Charnock Richard - Welcome Break - M6
Rivington - Euro Garages - M61
Birch - Moto - M62

Fascinating to see the difference between the UK system and ours in the US. On our Interstate highways there are 'service stations', privately owned, at practically every exit across most of the country. I've never seen anything to equal these huge multi-store places. Still sad to see the inroads that American junk food companies have made in your beautiful nation.
@handsoffmycactus2958

So are all our service stations? They are owned by private companies who run them and lots of things are on offer. McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, KFC, Starbucks, Greggs, Costa Coffee. Shops too like Spar, WHSmith.

You do have them in the US. I've not travelled extensively on US interstates, but I've these service centres in Massachussets, Connecticut, New York and Pencilvania. With the exception of the Connecticut ones, there were on toll roads though and didn't have hotels.

Tebay is the exception that proves the rule. In my previous career as a long haul van driver.I found almost all services to be overpriced,souless and depressing.I used to go to ridiculous lengths to have wee stops elsewhere.

Yes agreed. Tebay services is actually a pleasant services too stop at. Especially as a class 1 HGV driver who sleeps in his cab Monday too Friday, I’d try and plan my deliveries so I could stop at Tebay. With the little lake too walk around and the views it’s a lovely services to spend the night at. If I spend the night there I’ll take a walk round buy some nice food from the services and then spend the night in my cab, tucked up nice and warm and admire the views🙂👍🏻

6:16 - For Many years Forton Services was always my "happy place." Working at Lancaster Uni until about Midnite, there was little else open. At one point a couple of friends who had a takeaway would join me- two nice summers- as they were in the same situation. 3am Soya Lattes! Sometimes we would play the machines until daybreak, and finish the night with a Greggs. Happy Times, which shows that "happy" is what you make of it!

As a kid in the late 1960s I was taken on a special trip to Forton Services, as it was, and we had a sit-down meal of fish and chips in the iconic tower. The views of the Bowland Fells in one direction and Morecombe Bay in the other were stunning. We only did it once because the fish and chips were way more pricey than the local chippy! Let me also add my congratulations on reaching that 100k goal.

My parents used to live in Chorley and I live in Bedfordshire, so I used to use the back entrance and exit via Charnock Richards service station every time I visited them. In years gone by there was a fixed barrier and then rising bollards that blocked the entrance off, but they have been permanently in the down position for as long as I can remember. The local rumour was that there was supposed to be an exit off the M6 to serve Chorley but it never got built, so all the locals used the service station

I had never heard of EG or Euro Garages until a couple years ago. In Australia, one of our two major Supermarkets Woolworths had Caltex for all their supermarket associated fuel stations. Then Chevron in the US took the Caltex naming rights back. All the non-supermarket fuel stations rebranded back to Ampol as they were before 1996 and all the supermarket stations are now EG branded. Apparently EG bought out all 156 service stations across Australia. Side note, Woolworths had tried to team up with BP but the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) blocked it.

Charnock Richard Services is my local services along with Lymm truck stop (poplar 2000). Charnock Richard is also known as the Buy a bike services. Not because you can buy a bike there but there is a local cycle chop called Charnock Richard Cycles and it has the most irritating earworm and there for successful radio jingles I have ever heard. Lymm has an awesome shop tucked round the back selling all kinds of accessories for trucks. They also sell CB radios and it was one of the go to places locally if you wanted a CB radio.

I once coasted a pre-production Bentley Continental GT (BY614) for half a mile along the hard shoulder into Charnock Richard Services. It transpired that the fuel gauge calibration was about a quarter of a tank optimistic on the early test cars; not helpful for successfully making it back to the factory with a 6-litre twin-turbo W12. She coughed a couple of times in the middle lane so I checked mirrors and moved over; then she started hunting and coughing (no idiot lights on or suspicious odours) so hazards on and onto the hard shoulder, engage neutral and see what happens… engine cut out. 70mph V1 x behemoth = remarkable momentum so I silently glided about half a mile on the shoulder, up the sliproad and onto the forecourt. Checked everything I could without tools; nothing obvious. Bashed the fuel card, pushed the start button, waited for the fuel pump to sound normal while expecting it not to, then the starter engaged and she fired straight back up. Nobody believed me back at the office 😆

It was like eating a big bowl of plain porridge with no sugar, and at the end of it and thinking, ‘Well I quite liked that.’ The highlight for me was the incident with the full SD card - a part of the plot with disappointment, determination, confession and resolution. 15:05 that building that had the Petrol pumps in was a Garage for Boardmans recovery. They had the contract for dragging RTC’s etc off the network along with an AA / RAC contract. It’s been abandoned a long time, as you could tell from the paperwork. Boardmans had a Control Centre in the Pennine Tower at Forton. That shop area was, I think, a “ fast “ stop off for the truckers, before the rebuild, as it is right near the truck parking which is still in the original place on the southbound.
