Kubo and the Two Strings is an epic action-adventure set in a fantastical Japan from acclaimed animation studio LAIKA. Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of Game of Thrones) ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Akihiro (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kameyo (Academy Award nominee Brenda Vaccaro). But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta.
Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen - a magical musical instrument - Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara) to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfil his heroic destiny.

neuropiano I hope they continue to have content this amazing. I was little sad when Tim Burton began producing CGI films and no longer seems to be interested in making as many stop animation films. Laika has potential to take his place in noteriety, if they have not already.

A freaking lot of money. If you buy simple armatures they can cost up to $200 alone. And that's just the bone structure! One of these bad boys would cost your entire life's savings.

There isn't a huge amount you need SM control software to do, but Dragonframe does it, does it well and does it inexpensively. Kudos to them.

My one complaint is they made it look almost like a computer animation taking a bit away from that traditional romantic stopmotion look especially given the mastery on all levels here...so happy to see how they shared so much of the process...this is a modern masterpiece and nothing less...just an unfathomable project. Literally blown away by the artistry. The Italian masters are looking down quite pleased with everyone who had a hand in this film.

Denzel Nanor that unfortunately wouldn't surprise me. The way the movie was advertised in my country made it seem extremely weird and not worth seeing. so glad I watched it though. best movie I have seen in a very long time.

I actually went to a animation film festival in Volda, Norway and Brad Schiff, the lead animator from Laika had a lecture there. He brought the Kubo puppet and various poses of the faces and we got to play with it! Such a cool experience! Also, Brad was really nice and we learned a lot about the processes of making their movies.

the beetle of course. hes that one friend who was always optimist and fight for his friend but at the same time always getting hurt and keeps thing to himself even though its hurtful, just so that his friend wouldnt be hurt.

Also, LAIKA, make a version of your puppets for kids. You can even promote them by having kids animate a 2 minute scene with the puppets and submitting it for a contest. Im 31 and the kid in me would LOVE IT haha and my 12 and 5 yr old girls have grown up with LAIKA, they're favorite movies of all time are Coraline, Paranorman and Boxtrolls and they'd absolutely love having a slightly simplified version to make their own little frames with. And it also gets kids interested in stop motion at a young age, im so scared this art form will die out which is why I support LAIKA 100%. Yall are geniuses. Idk maybe bad idea but i hope they do it anyways haha

Is this film is 100% one stop motion film, because its really smooth

it's probably about 85-95% pure stop motion. they had to use computers for some aspects of the film, like the water (but they based the movement of the water off of a real life rig that they made) laika is really awesome because they pretty much only use computers and computer animation as a secondary aspect of their films. like, imagine that a laika film is an apple pie. stop motion is the apples and the crust, but computers are the cinnamon and sugar that bring it all together, y'know?

There is software that can make extra frames if they feel it becomes too choppy, but they should not rely on it because it can begin to look weird if used to often close together.

Really cool video. I only wish the other people sitting there would chime in with some questions, it would be so much more interactive and interesting to watch. For example, when Travis sais that monkey has a body made out of a sock and a muscle suit, what does that mean? What material is inside the sock and muscle suit? Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I watched this movie thinking the CGI imitated really good Stop Motion... I was literally blown away when I found out it was stop motion. I was blown out the open window into a bush. Mom asked what was wrong and I pointed to the screen and told her it was not CGI. It blew her away too and she was blown onto the street where she was hit a passing car. Shes ok.

I went to the Portland art museum and they have the actual puppets from Coraline, Kubo, and Paranorman, and they had a little room where it shows how they work the puppets, it was really cool!

I will use these secrets to make a little nightmares 2 side story about a kid covered in bandages looking for parts of machines. 1. Use replacment animation for the hands(sorry hunter but were on a budget) 2. Get a better computer(Keep old one because it is the only way to access alt channel) 3. Don't break the head or the hat. 4. don't leave crumbs on the set 5. Don't make the set out of cardboard(that stuff is not good for cliffs) That's about all I need to do.
