If you set your power producers such as coal, petrol and natural gas generators to only charge smart batteries to 15%, that leaves 85% of the capacity to be filled by intermittent producers such as steam turbines on Volcanos or solar panels.

I think the problem in cooling loop is ethanol, you have lots of nectar it is very much like polluted water it should work wonders

Don't tame the volcanos -- make your own magma biome, but with molten gold. You have two gold volcanos on the map, might be a fun side project.

A drecko farm is gonna be interesting, as you'll need 10C for the mealwood, and 30C for the dreckos themselves. Critters now take progressive damage if outside their liveable range, until they die, usually within 1 or 2 cycles, their scale growth, reproduction, etc also drops to zero.

If you ever get the opportunity to sit in an outdoor hot tub while it lightly snows, take it! Ice cold water running down your face (from melting ice) feels amazing in that context.

For something completely different, this map is very well suited to your favorite crop ever: nosh beans They actually fit right into your existing oxylite farm (plus or minus a few degrees) and require Dirt and Ethanol, both of which you are producing in spades.

that is a lot of engineering for a hot tub.. with the new dlc I started always going with a sauna/hot tub combo... steam turbine with aquatuner to cool base, pump steam into sauna, when the dupes use the sauna the water comes out piping hot which is great for the hot tub, hot tub empties cool water into the steam turbine. quick and easy on the piping, plus the dupes stay toasty

little tip with the cold bathrooms. Since the polluted water that comes out is +30℃, simply using insulated pipes (I used ceramic) has been enough in a -25℃ base, with the water only really cooling down to 28℃ before it ends up getting used. I did only make 1 bathroom/sink and I'm running a smaller colony so it pretty much guarantees water does not sit in pipes though. Extra bathrooms+sinks and you may end up with some that don't get used...

Gonna suggest this again: change the cooling block to metal tiles (especially now that you have gold) and let the buffer be the tank(s) of coolant.

I would love to see a base made for aesthetics. Ceiling moulding, statues everywhere, things done not purely for the sake of efficiency.

The ice box seems pointless, now that you have put a reservoir on the primary loop. You seem to have collected a lot of nectar by now. It'll perform much better on the long run through your base than the ethanol you are currently using. So why not switch to a normal cooling loop using nectar and dispose of the icebox?

Why are not using tree nectar in cooling loop? Wasn't it as good as water in transfering heat (the same heat capacity), but with better temperature range?

20:00 - Pressure also changes both freezing and boiling point of water, so depending on how much pressure there is around the ice, it might need a higher temperature above freezing point to actually melt. Not a game quirk but actual science.

Believe it or not, all you need are insulated pipes and water from the water warmer for bathrooms to start the loop. Keeping the environment warm with wood heaters helped too but it was difficult to regulate temperatures with wood heaters.

Cold steam vents are not very nice, but hot steam vents are great: You can just put a steam turbine on it to export the water.

I think you should prioritize adding salt water into the geothermal power plant over recycled clean water. Using a desalinator to clean the water whist also using clean water to supply the powerplant takes very slightly more water than using the power plant to desalinate and only using clean water to fill the gap. That's because the 8% liquid input is deleted by the geothermal power plant is calculated BEFORE boiling, which means 7% of the loss mass would have been salt. The 5.8% of water you get back from impurities is fixed, though. In fact, if you input brine, you actually get a surplus of water compared to desalination alone. So if you feed 1ton of clean water into the plant, the deletion is -1000*0.08=-80kg of water and refunds 58kg, leading to -22kg. 1 ton of salt water, -1000*0.93*0.08 + 58= -16.5kg 1 ton of brine, -1000*0.70*0.08 +58= +2kg. Keep in mind that this way also result in less heat being created. Technically, you can even feed non-water liquids into the vent to produce a net 58kg of water, though that can have a significant impact on power production. However, a mix of water and another liquid with a lower SHC at a higher temperature can result in more heat being created than water along. That's because the output temperature is based on the average input temperature of liquids, regardless of their SHC. So for example, feeding a bit of crude oil into a metal refinery, into the power plant to replace a portion of the water will roughly double the amount of heat produced by the refinery, though you are gonna have to pump that crude next to the vent for recycling purpose. The limiting factor here is the overheat temperature of your equipment inside your steam room. In principle, if you feed the temperature between 250 and 337 celcius, then you can even use the plant as a petroleum boiler. Between 250 celcius and 270 celcius, steel equipments won't get damage and you can use steam turbines with 2 blocked inlets to cool down the room without wasting power. You could even ranch molten slicksters, though they will be outside their comfortable temperature so you will need ceramic critter comdos for them to be happy.

It's not just this game having that margin of +/- 2°C. In reality crystallization (or freezing of most liquids) happens in a little different temperatures and so does melting. It has to do with surface energy. Kinda complex stuff. Anyway, if for example if add in something that can initiate freezing, that lowers the activation energy you can bump up the freeze point. This exactly why we can have super cooled liquids as liquids and this is why when you cool down a bottle of water to like -1°C it's still water and when you shake it, it flash freezes. In that regard ONI is quite realistic.

The comments will advise Francis that he's really sleeping on the biobots. They're like mobile auto-sweepers. So... sweepys. That can climb ladders and put things directly into storage bins. They are also like walking robo-miners. Cuz they're robots. That can walk and dig out tiles. The biobots can take on the unskilled labor, like large sweeping projects, and free up duplicant labor for other tasks. A biobot never gets called to lunch. A biobot never has to sleep at the end of the cycle. Biobots don't get soggy feet or stop to rub their eyes. Biobots exist to convert power into labor. The big problem with biobots is that you can't constrain them with door permissions. Unlike duplicants, trapped biobots do not starve or suffocate. However, that's just too much steel to leave stuck somewhere! The biobots are particularly handly for building inside lava. Being made of steel means they have a high melting temperature. Francis can now excavate a lava biome without triggering an investigation by the Planetoidal Health and Safety Authority.

Why would you need an aquatuner on that steam vent? It's not a _cool_ steam vent; it's hot enough to drive turbines as-is. Just plumb the turbines themselves into your industrial cooling, to make sure they don't overheat, and that's free power.

I'm jealous that you have a good volcano, not having one on mine is making space 2x as hard than it should be

I'm not sure what's the mechanics behind this exactly, but I've noticed that new bonbon trees naturally spawn in the space biome as snow and crushed ice pile up. Bonbon trees have the ability to dig themselves out of the snow/ice, but only the pile of snow is as tall or smaller than they are, so it's not rare for bonbon trees to get buried and for new ones to spawn higher. You might want to check your natural Bonbon tree farm in the space biome to see if you need to build new pipes. I'm really curious what's the exact mechanic behind this. Maybe some meteors contain bonbon tree seeds naturally and these seeds get planted automatically of their own? Maybe bonbon tree branches turn into new bonbon tree trunks when their own trunk gets killed by the snow? Maybe the space biome spawns them directly when natural snow tiles are exposed to the sun? More tests needed. I will try to find out when I have time. In any case, hypothetically, it's because bonbon tree seeds plant themselves on the ground after a while, then this could could allow for very space efficient "wild" planted farms.

"Let's heat the area with a hot tub" doesn't sound dumb at all. That's how heat works. Anything hot will heat the area. Now, if you'd said "let's heat the area with an _ice_ tub" or "let's _cool_ the area with a hot tub", that would have sounded a bit dumb (unless the temperature was so extreme to begin with that those things actually pushed it the other way).

I just slap a motion sensor in my bathroom, fill it initially and never let the water rest in the pipes, any time the dupe sensor triggers I just run it again. If someone pops in randomly it doesn’t hurt anything if everything’s topped up. Just runs a cycle from the insulated reservoir with a meter valve.

fyi, mercury is a terrible medium to use for heat transfer. since the thermal heat capacity is soooooo low, it can only grab a few amounts of DTU heat energy before it gets to it's temp, and vice versa, it has such a small capacity that it doesnt give away much heat either. I would not use mercury for this application.

You dont need to process the polluted dirt to feed the dreckos. Flox poop dirt. I dont remember the exact ratio but i think its something like 3to1 flox to drecko farms can produce a self sustaining loop without any processing and no dupe labor since you dont need to use the compost.

No heating needed for plumbing bathroom. Just keep the water moving ^^ it's very simple and easy to setup early just need 2 liquid tanks one for fresh one for polluted water to keep them looping

19:57 - To help clarify the Celsius (metric) temperatures. When water gets down to 0, it starts freezing. Now, logically you would think bringing ice (frozen water) above 0 would start melting it... but that isn't strictly true. Yes, it can melt... but it would be slow. Up to 3 celsius outside, is the 'beware of black ice' temperature. That is ice that starts melting but is still ice... but hard to see. It's called 'black' because it looks like regular road (black-top). So, while they may have coded it to to have ice melt at like 4 celsius in the game... technically, that makes it sort of operate like real life.

A while back I tried to force some cooling reservoirs of ice to work and I don't think I'll ever do it again. Even if it means a bigger reservoir is required, a block of metal tiles will treat you so much better.

As far as showers are concerned, I think they should put a de buff in where your duplicate has to take a shower every two days or they stink, and if they walk by another duplicate that duplicate something and that would require you to put showers in

the trouble point with freezing water in the toilet cycle is where it goes into the sieve, everywhere else wasn't too bad for me to maintain it comes out of the toilets at dupe body temperature; it comes out of the sinks apparently at the temperature of the sink itself, but it's throttled in 1kg packets so it won't damage the pipes even if it's below freezing, and the toilets always produce twice as much outfall p-water as the sinks per use, but it can cool down if it sits in the sieve intake pipe long enough and the pipe is below freezing

You can build the water cooler up by one tile, then delete the tiles underneath it, so it's just floating. Even though it will give the "missing tile" warning, not only will it still give you the Great Hall room bonus, but it also will allow you to build two more mess tables underneath it.

You can build the electric heater instead of the wood one. Also, dupes, when wet or cold, will automatically go to a heater, even if it means travelling through the whole map, which matters little since you use suits.
