Nice to see Slavic mythology get some love! I thought Chernobog was a Slavic deity invented by later Christians, alongside Belobog? Though their dualism could maybe be based on Perun and Veles.

Yes! I read about that, that they were practically "created" by the Christians around 12th-14th century just to give a "face" to the Slavic tribes for the battle between good and evil!

Are you saying that the Christian religion in the Slavic nations did not promote Christ as being the only way to God? This is interesting because I thought that Christians only had one God in three persons.

Another questions. Do you think that the early Slavic nomads that ventured into India left an impact on the Indians with their Slavic Gods?
@js1423
@js1423 Год назад
@@barrocksproductions8684 There was a lot of syncretism when Christianity arrived to the various peoples of Europe, that lasted for a few centuries. The Finnish thunder-god of Ukko was reinterpreted as a powerful archangel, while Perun, the Slavic thunder god who traveled on flaming chariots, was equated with Elijah of the Old Testament.

Much appreciated the presentation. Especially considering how difficult is to put deities together since most of records were written long after the original Slavic panthenon got trampled under christianity. Some deities names were slightly distorted and few were not named, but I assume it was because they often represented local versions of those, who were named. For example from the little I've learned about our version of panthenon, we did not have Marzanna, but Morana instead and she was goddess of winter, death and famine, who died in the end of winter to be replaced by Vesna, who was goddess of spring, fertility, festivity and music. In some other versions Morana is called Veliana instead and she is also aspect of war and blood sacrifice, portrayed as beautiful but very pale woman with very long either dark black or grey hair and sometimes with ghastly grinning smile. She is sometimes also called Smrť, or Smrtka, or Zubatá.

I love this. There were a lot of interesting gods I've never heard of but I could recognise a bunch of them from my book "Mythological Atlas" by Thiago de Moraes. I also had a strong reaction to Radegast since it made me think of Tolkien's wizard character Radagast. If I'm not mistaken, Radagast in Tolkien's world building is a brown wizard focused on the forest. I might be wrong here but it sounds like he took inspiration from slavic mythology for his own character. I know that he borrowed a lot from norse mythology, the story of Beowulf and from the poetry collection Kalevala as well as historical events in britain. It sort of feels like an easter egg whenever I discover new things.

Goddess Dziewana & Devana are the same goddess also called SERBONA/Polona/Tara/Dara/Daria/Daša/Deja(Deya)/Divia. Word Divia also gain a meaning Goddess and word Div (other name of Perun) also means God. Word Devana also means Virgin and Romans copied Devana into Diana and "Greeks"/Hellens copied Devana/Serbona into Erbona/Arbona/Artema/Artemis. Brother of Goddess Devana/Serbona (Polona; Pol-pole, Ona-She) was her co-ruller and opposite/Polon (Pol-pole; on-he) called God SERBON/TARH/DARH/DAZHBOG. Parents of SERBONA/DEVANA & SERBON/TARH/DARH/DAZHBOG were God PERUN and Goddess LETO/LADA. Symbol of Devana/Serbona/Dara/Tara is a Moon Crust symbol (C) or 4 Crust moons symbol (C), which is today an emblem of Serbia.

umm . . . Oźwiena is a Slavic pseudo-deity/deities (pseudo-gods, pseudo-goddesses) are Slavic deities described in popular and sometimes even scientific literature, whose historicity is not recognized by the vast majority of scholars, i.e. the deities in question are not deemed actually to have been objects of worship among pagan Slavs. The pseudo-deities of Slavic peoples, like those of other ethnic groups, were created as a result of mistakes (e.g., by understanding the given name as a theonym, unfamiliarity with the Slavic languages, misunderstanding of pagan ritual, or uncritical use of sources), as a result of the creation and falsification of Slavic Romantics, or even as a result of falsification for political motives. The reason for the last two may be that, unlike, for example, those of Greek mythology, the sources on Slavic mythology are severely limited.

Interesting. In slovak jar means spring. There is a word ,,jatriť,, which means irritate.
@gideonros2705
@gideonros2705 22 дня назад
The true etymology of Jarilo is not goat but heat and fire in connection with fertility and the deity Perun. Also in many slavic languages jariti as a verb is associated with anger, temper and rage. But the ancient meaning of it is connected to fire and burning. For wich there is still a word in Ctoatian and Serbian. That is why sexual desire or 'heat' and the 'fiery' temperament all use this root meaning. And that is also the reason for his association with war and the cult of warriors.

In alpine area there was Kresnik. In stories and character he is multifaceted so he can be compared to both Perun, Dažbog, and Jarilo. He is however clearly solar. The 24.june was historically one of more imortant dates in Slovene lands so they made bonefires and maypoles and that day was called Kres and people said; O kresi se dan obesi - day (daytime) is hanged on a Kres day. Kres also means bonefire, kresniti to strike, kresilnik - flint for starting fire, kresilo - fire striker and many more related meanings.

@sanjablazina2879 Год назад
@@marcelhalza6916this is very interesting! We use "mlad" in everyday conversation while "jar" is considered archaic and also has a slightly different connotation nowadays. There is an expression containing -jar- that is used for anger in our language, where "biti razjarjen" means to be extremely enangered; perhaps that is what they connected to Jarilo's name. There are probably some other archaic expressions for anger and associated concepts that stem from the root -jar-, but the most commonly used word nowadays is "jeza", which doesn't seem to derive from the same root. I am not an expert and am not 100% confident in my interpretations, but the interconnectedness and similarities of languages fascinate me, so I wish to thank you for what you have shared in these comments and may continue to share, Marcel😊

@@sanjablazina2879 Thank You very much.And for your interest. I can understand both. as the , jatriť, means irritate and ,jatriť sa, means to get angry. Ježiť sa, is probably from the animal Jež. As the jež has his "hair" upright all the time. Many animals have its fur upright when they are angry.

@sanjablazina2879 Год назад
@@marcelhalza6916 yes, when someone gets irritated or annoyed we say something similar - "(na)ježiti se" :D I have an association on "jatrit' sa", does it have anything to do with the liver in its origin? Jetra means liver in my language, and when you say something annoys you, you say "(to) mi gre na jetra", (that) goes on my liver😆 also, a way to say someone is bitter and angry about something is "žolčen", which has to do with bile. I think you get much closer if you compare Iranian and Hindu gods to Slavic then any Western European, because of the Satem language group they share. Perun is therfore closer to the Hindu god Agni and Rudra. The name Ru-dra and pe-Ru(n) share the same root which in many Indo-European language mean red or ruddy, or reddening in connection with heat and fire. In Serbia there was a custom of giving a name Ognjen, literally fire, to protect but also to seek blessings from thunder. In otherwords to seek blessings from Perun. The name itself is directly connected to the Sanskrit Agni meaning fire.

Nice video BUT marginaly correct. There is no unique Slavic pantheon. Each region, from Dresden to Vladyvostok, from Rugen to Damascus, have had its own pantheon. There are several gods (older gods) that are present throughout all regions (Perun, Veles, Dazhbog, Morana, Swarog (father of all gods)...) and others that crop up only in some regions. I presume that material for this video is from Poland, with a touch of Ynglism (neopagan, who have invented Chernobog and Belobog, which did not exist originaly).

@gideonros2705 22 дня назад
True. But more importantly, the Slavs are closer to other Satem languages and mythical world understanding. Slavs didn't have a pantheon in a Greek sense but a Trinity like the Hindu Brahman-Vishnu-Shiva. Which is not a group or pantheon of three Gods but an absolute God represented in it's three aspects of being, becoming and nonbeing. All other gods are in fact aspects or to use Orthodox term energies or powers of God. The supreme God was in fact Triglav, similarly to the Hindu Trimurt. Both terms meant the same: three face or three head. One God with three aspects or faces. Interesting that the word aspect is etymologicallly conected to the word face or appearance. Therefore Triglav or Trimurt is the three dimensions how the Absolute manifest and appears: being-becoming-nonbeing.

@Defacto Jones okay, I looked it up. Calling Vesna "a goddess" is very dubious in my opinion, as she was mentioned only in the context of springtime celebration as a personification of the spring, and doesn't have any surviving stories attached to her

The problem with slavic gods is that they are not uniform across all slavic culure. We never had a pantheon, that would appoint the most important ones. Slavic pagans treated this less like a religion and more as a way of life. Rivers and mountains had their own gods, so worshipping was very regional. Outside of the main ones like Perun (allgod), Morana (death), Veles/Vesna, tribes didn't really share dieties. Favourites from my area would be Belin (god of healing, known to cure blindness) and Kurent (god of partying and fertility, basically). Edit: Also, it's incredibly hard to find authentic information on our culture, because most of it has been destroyed, rewritten and appropriated by christianity. A lot of it is also revivalist junk from russian fasists, so thread carefully.

The Slavic belief in my opinion can only be reconstructed with the Satem languages.The Slavs are closer to other Satem languages and mythical world understanding. Therefore Triglav or Trimurt is the three dimensions how the Absolute manifest and appears: being-becoming-nonbeing. That is also why there is such variation and diversity in the names of God's and their importance in different places. They were worshipping an aspect of a Supreme God. And the importance varied according to the needs of communities or their particular association with aspects of this Supreme Deity. In fact if you look at the various names for these Gods the will etymological connect to common words like the goddess Zhiva to the word zhiv or life. Perun was connected to the root RU which is connect to word for RED like the Serbian term ruse kose/red hair and many variations of this root.

Lots of them are not originated from slavic culture only slavic tribes "borrowed" from older tribes from Baltics
@TheOlgaSasha
@TheOlgaSasha 4 месяца назад
Slavs did not borrow those gods from Balts, because Slavs are the southern branch of Balts which began to separate from Balts in 3rd century BC due to invasion of Venedi and partially Bastarnae to the territory of modern north Ukraine and Southern Belarus (Zarubintsy archaeological culture of 3rd c. BC - 1 c. AD which is considered the first proto-Slavic culture according to opinion of most modern scholars).
4 месяца назад
@@TheOlgaSasha so they did borrowed, because these as I mentioned borrowed Gods are older in Baltic region, then Slav mythology culture existed. Modern scholars who originate from east (belarus, ruzzia etc) ar threat to normal conversations. Their writings are biased and it is why we still have wars in this modern age.
@TheOlgaSasha
@TheOlgaSasha 4 месяца назад
@ I repeat again. Slavs did not borrow those gods because Slavs originated as a branch of Balts so they have always had those gods in pantheon. Slavs are descendants of remains of Baltic tribes of Neuri (Milograd arch. culture) who mixed with Pommeranian tribes of Venedi and Celto-Germanic tribes of Bastarnae in 3rd century BC (as a result Zarubintsy arch.culture of proto-Slavs appeared). And this is opinion mostly of western scholars, not ruzzian ones. Ruzzian so-called "scholars" continue to spread propaganda about "ancient Slavs". But there were no Slavs till 3rd century BC. Slavs are rather young branch, product of complicated amalgamation of Baltic superstrate and Venedic substrate within Zarubintsy arch.culture. That is why Slavs have almost the same gods as Balts but also have gods which were brought by another ethnic elements (Venedi and Bastarnae) some of which also can be found in Celto-Germanic mythology.
