Doctor here - STI and STD are sometimes used interchangeably but are actually different things. STIs refer to the infections themselves caused by the bacteria/virus/etc, whereas STDs refer to the diseases caused by STIs. Not all STIs will have developed into STDs at the time that they are diagnosed. For instance you may have an HIV infection (an STI), but that may not have developed into acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS (an STD): meaning you have an STI, but not an STD. It's a subtle difference, and at the end of the day if you use them interchangeably everyone will still know what you mean; but here's the explanation for anyone who's curious. WHICH MEANS: these *infections* in the video should be going by STI. On a cheerier note - Julie, that was very funny, I hope you've been well and that you're having as much fun making these videos as we're having watching them!

That's your take away? Maybe if there were more shame with STDs there wouldn't be so much of it We have the same people coming in the ER with STDs a few times a year. No shame. No care. Seemingly no consequences.
@saxmanmel
@saxmanmel 8 месяцев назад
@@jerryemt2001 For years, I worked in an HSV support group. Of the many things that I learned there, two especially stick out. One, *anyone* can get herpes. Two, shame *never* works. All shame does is push things further underground, which makes providing help all the more difficult. I'm not advocating that people go around having sex without protection or caution. That would be silly. Instead, I'm a proponent of normalizing these type of conversations. Education and empathy reduces STI rates. Shame never does.

As someone who has performed STI tests - don't be worried about going to a clinic or doctor either. Trust me, we've seen and heard it all before. Never had to deal with STDs, but I talked to a lot of doctors about very personal stuff like my severe depressions I had in the past. You dont have to be ashamed for anything in front of doctors. They are pros, have seen and heard stuff and dont go around town telling people your diseases... Commercials like this make me wonder if the unspoken issue here is that many muricans still have no sufficient free healthcare and find it cheaper to buy an at-home-test? I mean, better tested this way than not tested. But still tge best way would be free accessible healthcare and get rid of your shame when it comes to talking with your doctor.

It was a huuuuge controversy back then^^ We have to pay extra for glasses and partly for dental prosthetics and 5 Euros per medicamentation subscription, but pretty much everything else is included in insurance. Until 25 I paid zero in insurance, coz I was studying and as "a child" included in my moms insurance. I was unemployed for some years, so the state paid for my insurance. If you earn too much for social welfare but still have only a small income you pay about 150 Euros per month. Right now I pay about 70 since I work a bit and receiva bit social welfare. 100 euros or dollars per visit or more is just ridiculous. I would be unironically dead right now if I wouldnt have been able to receive help for my mental health for free exept the few bucks per subscription. Actually gonorrhea (or wtv how it's spelled haha) is so common, the bacteria responsible for it is exposed to a shit ton of antibiotics, and there are now some very resistant strains out there, which I think are called "super-gonorrhea". As for chlamydia, women are at a higher risk to be asymptomatic and it might take one of their partners to notify them to realize they are infected (and it's not likely to happen if it's a one night stand). It's really scary! Get tested!

There is a huge market for convenient and discreet disease testing, but technology isn't here. How can we make it work with what we have? What do we specialize upon? Any ideas, team, come on, let's hear it." I wish them success and hopefully see them branch out later on as we really need to be able to diagnose people faster. Probably not for STDs as highest priority, but that's their choice on where to start, that's what market research is for. P.S.: hope they've done good job on thinking everything through though.

Perfection is impossible, I hope they recover from mistakes rapidly and gracefully. Companies that admitted mistakes in the past enhances our trust in them for the future. However, if they realize quickly, and respond appropriately, such mistakes won't be worthy of much media coverage. So we probably won't hear about them.]

OP, I'm curious, why did you speculate about STDs being not the highest priority? Did I interpret you correctly if I say it seems like you would argue some other disease or class of diseases should be prioritized? I've just really gotten fascinated with infectious disease topics these last few months (kinda binged all of This Podcast Will Kill You and somehow didn't get bored of the topic, oops XD ) so I'd love to hear any insights you have on the field. I know STIs are some of the most prolific and most underdiagnosed IDs but others do of course cause more deaths these days, but also there's ease/affordability of testing and demand for testing to consider and all that (like you alluded to when you mentioned market research) so I'd figure that's why the brand focused in the niche, but yeah, would dig it if you'd be down to expound on your views!

@@ItsAsparageese I didn't. Maybe they are the most important to focus upon. Once again, that's what market research is for. @ItsAsparageese
@ItsAsparageese 2 года назад
@@danielrichmond5662 Speaking as a general public health and patient education nerd, I _think_ (but cannot specifically cite with certainty) that there's been a shift in public health communication on this front due to the many nuances of how different diseases are transmitted and the way people (at scale) often misunderstand or misapply things. Humans (at scale) are generally better at doing something once a year than making ongoing changes to their lifestyle preferences, like committing to use of barrier methods. Humans (broadly) do better when given one specific instruction to prioritize complying with, rather than given many subtly different instructions for how to stack risk mitigation methods on top of other risk mitigation methods. Anyone can argue all day and night that individuals """should""" XYZ, of course, but when it comes to actual adherence to medical recommendations, the data are the data and humans behave like humans. As a result, it's vital that health educators take into account these behavioral patterns, and engineer large public messages like these to have the most valuable possible impact, which usually means trying to cast a really wide net and aim to have a small but existent impact on the largest possible number of people, which means making the actionable advice something that stands a good chance of being adopted by the least informed and least invested individuals. People who are more informed and invested will often take it upon themselves to learn more and integrate multiple information sources and take extra precautions. So big public messages are often largely wasted if they're tuned to preach more to the proverbial choir and the front half of the pews, rather than tuned to resonate at least a tiny bit with everyone in the back half of the room, if that awkward metaphor-stretch makes sense lol. Again, just speculation based on my own eclectic and often informal work in and study of this stuff -- my knowledge is largely useful-but-isolated-and-weirdly-shaped chunks of experience duct-taped together with lots of free webinars from public health nonprofits lol -- but from general data trends and paradigm shifts I've observed, this is my current best conjecture about the reasoning for the message being focused as it was (leaving out all of the commercial motivation factor lol, since nonprofit and government messages are leaning this direction too, and anyway the testing company is of course financially motivated to increase compliance, so it all kinda works out the same in application in this particular instance). All that said, you're absolutely right about condoms being a good idea no matter what and the general importance of redundant methods and overall best practices! I'm glad you raised that point!
