Why Theatre? Well, theatre people are some of the most resourceful, intelligent, charismatic, and persistent people out there. The motto of theatre literally is “the show must go on.” And more recently we’ve seen what happens when theatre students suddenly have a national stage. They are spreading their voices, and they are not throwing away their shot. I was a theatre kid too, and that changed my life. So I celebrate theatre and its influence on society to make the world better and to continue to reflect society and the values we hold dear. Theatre people, they get the job done!

"32,000" is said 3 times in Right Hand Man, adding up to 96,000, a kind of... deconstructed reference to In the Heights. Lin said that it wasn't intentional, but he likes it anyways.

I've never heard that, and I've been in a production of MacBeth! If you're in a theater, and you are not working on a production of MacBeth, you call the play "the Scottish play" and the character "the Scottish king" (and, ergo, Lady M would be "the Scottish queen"). The one exception to this is if the script calls for a character on stage to say it.

Another possible West Side Story reference: In "My Shot," in Hamilton's "Am I talking too loud" part is accompanied by silence, with the ensemble snapping their fingers in rhythm. Snapping fingers represents pent up agression and danger in West Side Story, and in "My Shot" it's representing how Hamilton's dangerous talk has drawn attention to himself.

I saw a tweet recently from Lin that said that the “Scottish tradgey” is Hamilton actually referring to himself. His father was Scottish and since the dad left and Hamilton became a bastard, he is a tradgey. He’s the first and Macbeth is the “another.” Hamilton is so extra
@tracyroweauthor
@tracyroweauthor 4 года назад
yes, what he means is Hamilton is comparing his life to another man who's ambition led to tragedy, specifically Macbeth. The line "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day" is a direct quote from Macbeth. Madison is Banquo, Jefferson's Macduff And Birnam Wood is Congress on its way to Dunsinane are all references to Macbeth. Banquo is Macbeth's best friend (who he ends up murdering) and MacDuff is a lord who suspects Macbeth of killing the King and eventually kills him. "Macbeth shall never vanquish be, until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill Shall come against him" is part of the prediction by the witches that leads him to murder. Anjelica says later in the song "screw your courage to the sticking place" a line Lady Macbeth says to Macbeth when he is wavering on whether to kill the king.

It's bad luck to say it no matter what you're referring to unless you're putting it on (ie, you can say it as part of your lines or to direct the actor or whatever) but any time you say it in a theatre outside of that context you have to reverse the curse before someone gets hurt.

"Spending spree" and "you... you... you" are a fairly ridiculous stretch, like companies thinking they can trademark a circle or the color green. I don't know if it can be categorised as a refrence, but in 'Right Hand Man' the sentence: "32000 troops in New York harbour" is sung 3 times. 32000 times 3 is 96000, like the 'In The Heights' song. Lin Manuel Miranda has said this happened accidentally.

I think that the pacific overtures and room where it happens theory also points to satisfied. In helpless, we see Eliza and Alexander’s first meeting in Eliza’s perspective. But then, when Angelica performs satisfied, the story is retold, but in Angelica’s perspective. One time, Anthony was asked what was the hardest song to perform (if I’m correct) and he answered satisfied because they had just done the choreography for helpless and had to do it reverse when the rewind part comes. Then, after the rewind part, they had to do the choreography AGAIN.

The intention from Last Five Years is a clearer link though. My Junk just ends with You you you. Without a clear subject or object because it’s an ensemble number with everyone seeing different junk. In LFY, it’s clearly a spurned lover who has been cheated on and somewhat abandoned by her husband. Lamenting her frustration with this clearly identified “you”.

Sometimes, though, a turn of phrase like “spending spree” and “the way the sausage gets made” is a common idiom that is used a lot in our language. Just because two shows use a common turn of phrase doesn’t mean one is referencing the other. But it’s ok if you want to think it is :)

There seems to be a further layer of meta-referencing written into the show surrounding theater traditions and superstitions: According to some, a curse surrounds the name of the play, MacBeth, so named after the historic Scottish king and main character of the show. Some actors differentiate between naming the play and naming the character in terms of which one is unlucky, and some believe that any mention of MacBeth at all is unlucky. I avoid saying it in rehearsal or performance, not out of fear of any supernatural force, but out of respect for the performers with whom I work who may have that superstition. As such, it seems likely that Lin, as author and performer, tips his hand on his preference; not naming the play, but naming only the character Macbeth, Hamilton still dies. Whistling on stage has a similar superstition. Before radio headsets, stage-hands would communicate with one another by whistling to raise and lower set pieces and backdrops. Performers during this time would have been strictly warned against whistling, and heavily chastised for doing so and potentially causing production disasters. This practice may have morphed into a superstition over time which persists to this day. In Blow Us All Away, (perhaps more aptly titled than we first thought) Lin seems to invoke that superstition when Phillip is re-introduced to the audience by a whistling motif, shortly before he is shot and killed. It would be fascinating to do an even deeper dive into this concept throughout the show.

I never really noticed the parallel between Someone in a Tree and Room Where It Happens. Though I do LOVE Pacific Overtures and that song in particular. The Sondheim show that always comes to my mind when I hear Room Where It Happens is Assassins, mainly because of the phrase "Click, Boom" which makes me think of the click boom of cocking a gun and shooting it, a noise heard several times during Assassins, most notably at the end of the opening and finale.

Sort of a fun fact about Hamilton, when Hamilton says McBeth in theater if you say and the show it can cause bad luck and once Lin who played Hamilton says something along "they think McBeth" once he says that everything falls down in Hamilton life which goes to Say No to this, Hurricane, Reynolds Pamphlet, Burn and his son Phillip death. His whole entire life falls apart after saying McBeth. Edit: there is also more bad things that happened after he says that like Quiet Up Town

For those that are wondering. If you whistle on a stage while performing it’s bad luck! You can’t name the play Macbeth, you can only say his name. For example I did a production of a child’s version of Shakespeare called ‘Shakespeare Rocks’ when we got to the part about Macbeth we do not say Macbeth, we only said Mac for short. The song that we performed for Macbeth was called ‘Don’t mention Mac!” Where they actually speak about his full name bringing bad luck to the stage. When we did our performance of ‘Shakespeare Rocks’ one of the people on stage has to shout Macbeth. Except they will just say Mac and then Beth was censored out. Me and a few other people ran off stage (it was apart of the script) to represent that whoever is standing on the stage when the name of the play is mentioned will get bad luck for the rest of that performance. Hope that cleared things up.

Finally, someone caught the "Modern Major-General" reference!! Also, just wanted to point out that Sweeney Todd is not a historical figure, but a sort of urban legend. I'd say the inspiration comes more from the fact both shows play off the idea that an ambitious character's inability to wait and a tendency to act on impulse leads to their downfall (Todd and Hamilton, respectively), as predicted by a more patient, analytical character (Lovett and Burr). Heck, we see these types of mindsets played out in songs like "Wait for it" in Hamilton, where Burr explains the fact that he thinks he is doing the right thing by not rushing into decisions like Hamilton does, and "Wait" in Sweeney Todd, where Lovett explains to Todd that his plan will work better if he acts more carefully. Sorry for the long post- I just love these two shows, and could talk about them for hours!
