GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY Comes close with the bow I have, the two owner/bowyers of the company took the time to find the right Hickory wood and even passed up some less figured woods, the bow looks like it was made entirely by machines it is that good and they did a proper stabilization to all the wood used in the bow including the handle of the wood/bamboo options. They do tone down the stabilization sheen by using a matt satin finish over the bow and yes, a matt satin is the full name of the finish type they use. I do like the fact that my bow, the Youth Longbow is actually an American Style Shortbow or ASS, as all shortbows tend to be no more then 55--56 inches with the Youth Longbow being 52 inches. I do think that GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY is currently the closest company to me making both longbows and recurve bows in a full lineup to where I live in Pierre (Pier) South Dakota, as St. Patrick longbows from Minnesota only makes longbows and I am not sure if the new American Archery is still making bows or if they stopped making bows by 2016, sometime around there.

It’s videos like this that make this HANDS DOWN my favorite RU-vid channel! Your passion for traditional archery has influenced myself and many others . I appreciate the knowledge that you share and the inspiration you carry with your words. I have switched from recurves to longbows and I’m the youngest longbow shooter at my local archery range. Most 24 year olds are obsessed with compounds but this, this stick and string has stood the test of time and I too will grow old with a longbow! Thanks again for another video !!! -Thomas 🏹

@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Год назад
Clear glass on all my bows. I am not a fan of colored glass and prefer to see the the veneers rather than a solid color. All my longbows except the one I currently shoot with the quiver on it are mat finish. The one I shoot has a gloss finish that I dulled down a bit with steel wool. The gloss finish is tougher that the mat. And a thicker more substantial finish. Just needed the shine knocked down with the steel wool. I love it

Steve, I've been buying longbows for a whole year trying to find a longbow that would shoot well for me at a decent price. Are there any longbows and bow makers you would recommend within $500 or less? I'm an avid shooter and new traditional archer. I won't pickup a compound. Stick and string is the only thing that excites me. God bless brother.

Lots of amazing used bows in the price and the amazon black hunter longbow is excellent and less than 200 new
@caseysmith544
@caseysmith544 Год назад
Yep the Montana from Bear is a great option having seen a person shoot one before but an older 2000 or late 1990's bought bow in the 2000's. PSE has the Terra for a very great price $250. Farmington then has the Apache, a very similar bow to the Terra with slightly different grip at the same price of $250. Then Grayvn only makes longbows in flat styles like a Snake River, Bush and , one single model exactly to Howard Hills early unbacked bows as well as a few English longbow style, and some other bows in native styles. All bows are Hickory sapwood or inner core bows that are at most $425--$450 for one of the English models. Only flaw with the Grayvn bows like most actual custom bowyers that have a 6--12 month wight is Graven bows have a 6 moth wait unless you buy one of 6 finished models on 3 Rivers Archery site who also has the Vinyl Leather bow sock that Grayvn is supposed to sell.

@@caseysmith544 Thank you sir. I had purchased an Apache longbow, and just shot it today. It shot wonderfully! I am so happy! And I just found a Trad Archery Club nearby with 400 acres to hunt during hunting season! Bowhunting with trad bows are the best!

@@McDonaldsWrath18 Honestly... There is something to be said about searching for the perfect fitting bow...there is also something to be said about finding one that you somewhat like, and not switching for a year straight.... You may find alot of bows will work when you buckle down and stick to one for one year... YMMV.

Hi Jason, How many years can a laminated bow be reliably used for hunting? From a safety point of view, how many years do hunters need to get a new bow?
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Год назад
If shot atleast a few times a year I would say 50 or 60 years at minimum. There are many people hunting with traditional bows that were made in the 50s and 60s right now still. And the quality of glues and materials now I bet a bow today would last much longer.
@matthewyu3531
@matthewyu3531 Год назад
@@SamkoTradBow Thank you very much for your response. If I hunt with my laminated traditional bow almost every day, including cold winter, not only a few times a year, do you think my bow could last 50 or 60 years? I just want to know when I should get a new bow for safety reason. Thank you.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Год назад
@matthewyu3531 yep the more ypu shoot it the better. Reason I said a couple times a year was because if it sits for years without being shot it can eventually get brittle. But if you shoot it it will last basically forever.

I use for my eventual hunting bow something very similar to the Windstorm Youth Longbow that is at 24 inches a 45 pound bow from GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY and looks very similar in Hickory. The other bow I thought would be my hunting bow is a in USA Sold on Amazon, Chinese made OEELINE Airobow their 54 inch one piece recurve at 45 pounds that looks like a Bear Super Grizzly scaled down to 54 inches proportionally in all but the brace height. Then I have my get back into the sport bow in 2021 not having done archery since 2008--2009 winter, an Actionbow by Actionrod 8200 the 60 inch flat limb Longbow model made from 1961 to end of 1979 they sell in the most common weight to survive the 36 pound that I draw to 34--35 pounds 99% of the time in good weather not cold as then poundage goes up. I had to get an endless loop string from Legend because the string for the All fibarglass bow needed to be exactly between a 2 inch and 3 inch height of a Longbow and Recurve type string, this brand has the strings at 2.5 inches shorter for old bows that need such a height. This is from newest to oldest of bows that I own for myself and have not given to a person. The one bow that is 52--54 inches that was your sons first bow that was his only with the look like a Kodiak Magnum is more then likely a Shakespeare Sierra model that is 52 inches long. I have seen enough of that model as well as a Kids version trying to track down one in left for my left eye dominate issue before I got the OEELINE Airobow model thinking the size would work for my draw length but does not due to several factors, if they made a 55 pound or 60 pound bow I would have gotten another and also put my draw 24--24.5 inches for this bows weight, I have a cheap scale that is fairly accurate to +/-- 1 pound.

@SamkoTradBow

Recurves have a curve at the end of the limb and string come in contact with the limb at the tip. A longbow has no curve at the end and the string doesn't contact the limb. Both are amazing and it's just personal preference
