I think its hard to underestimate how influential Buffy was, I think it pretty much launched a generation young positive female heroine shows. Two shows I have really enjoyed that fit into this category are Alias, an espionage show that was the breakout for both Jennifer Garner and Bradley Cooper. Tonally very different is Dead Like Me, from the same creator as Hannibal (but nothing like that show either), an interestingly non-action genre show. I also enjoyed Fringe which scratched the X-Files itch, but built its own identity eventually and some really bold science fiction ideas. If I had to pick a 'criminally overlooked' show, it would be Medium. Often written off as a touchy feel-y Ghost Whisperer type show, it had some of the smart writing, and managed to come up with a fresh and different stand alone plot every week for several seasons and never became formulaic which was a real achievement.
It's funny, you grew up with The Vampire Diaries and are now watching Buffy, I'm doing the opposite. Buffy was the show that made me a tv lover, and shaped me in a lot of ways, and you convinced me to start TVD (I'm currently halfway through season 4). I can definitely see a major influence that Buffy (and Angel) had on the show, some plots are very similar, but the mythology and the characters are different enough that it's usually not a problem, and I've been enjoying it a lot. It's pretty fun to see how they approach similar themes in their own way. I should be starting The Originals soon as well :)
I agree with you on so many of these shows. SVU is my go-to when I can't find anything else to watch. LoL. I also lost interest in Arrow after S3. You've got to watch Firefly. It's only one season & you can get though it pretty quickly. It's great to react to. True Blood is also very reaction-worthy. Crazy things happen. It's got humor, gore, magic & romance. And, I haven't seen anyone else react to it. I think you'll like it. Agents of SHIELD has quickly grown into one of my favorite shows ever. It's another Whedon family creation. I can't remember if you mentioned it but, you have to react to that one too! Also, react to Black Mirror. Keep up the good work! XO

Burn Notice Shameless Pretty Little Liars Banshee Lost are some shows you can check out if you need more to watch on your own time. IDK if they are reaction worthy but in your spare time at least they are pretty good. Dexter is probably the only show on your list i've seen all the way through. It was fun.
Definately Alias has to be watched....it has one of the best villains ever put to television. Other great shows are Smallville,Battlestar Galactica (the latest version),The O.C. ,Roswell,Doctor Who and House But if i had to pick one it would be 24....this was literally a game changer of a show and nothing even matches it
I always highly, highly recommend Once Upon A Time! About storybook/Disney characters, that are trapped in our world/reality. Would absolutely love it if you could give it a chance❤️ Also, Dollhouse! It’s from Buffy creator Joss Whedon👍 Lucifer, the devil quits his job and moves to L.A, it is a good one too! Also recommend, The Man in the High Castle, it is a slow pace show, but quite dark and has to do with an Alternate Universe where the Nazis’ and the Japanese win World War 2, and the United States is divided, the east coast is run by Nazis, and the West Coast is run by the Japanese. There are these films that show our reality where The Nazis and Japanese lost WW2, and it’s very Dark, Mature, intense at times, and slightly, a little bit sci-fi
A person who hasn't seen Breaking Bad?! Other recs: The Americans, Mad Men, Deadwood, Firefly (another Joss Whedon show). Also, since you seem to like highschool dramas, Friday Night Lights may appeal, and definately check out Freaks and Geeks sometime.
lol how could you forget BB??? FNL revolves around a highschool football coach and his family in Texas + the various players on the team. It's not really a CW style teen show and I don't know if it's anything like One Tree Hill, having never seen that, but there's plenty of romance and teen drama and some great acting. It's very well received by critics, in any case, so it might be worth checking out the trailer.
Just curious have you ever watched charmed? The original not the reboot thats coming. Its a great show and since you love VD and Buffy you would probably enjoy Charmed as well. Maybe something to react to. True blood is also very very good.

Don't know One Tree Hill -- I'm immediately like: how does a high school show run NINE YEARS? lol If you really like Buffy, then Buffy fans will definitely say to watch Angel and probably Joss Whedon's other shows, Firefly and Dollhouse.
YES now I do remember hahah! OTH lasted this long mainly because it departed from being a High School show after S4 and followed the characters during their lives marriages and their careers, it's also a show about grown up life as well actually.
"One Tree Hill" is one of the many shows that basically exists because of the mammoth success of "Dawson's Creek" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" both setting the tone for the WB (now the CW). They became the network for that demographic, which nobody else was going after much in those days.
