Lakan is there every day to literally annoy Jinshi for "stealing" Maomao. By the way it's never mentioned again, but the author confirmed Jinshi met with Ah-Duo in the brothel, just to share a drink and talk.

Not necessarily just to annoy Jinshi. I mean he did goad Jinshi into asking Maomao fairly uncomfortable questions. He's a strategist, he's making plays.

@@calumnyslander4050 It's mentioned multiple times in previous episodes by Jinshi how it started right after he hired Maomao and how he goes there to re-discuss the same proposed laws over and over again and how he tires him out every single day. He is there to annoy him

@@neretilderem7029 lol. This episode he made a thinly veiled threat to Jinshi and pushed him to set up a meeting with Maomao you think that was just because it would 'annoy' Jinshi? He didn't actually want to connect with his daughter or try to buy her out off Jinshi, he just was annoying Jinshi? You think he prodded Jinshi to send Maomao to investigate a case of a rocky relationship between a father and his children just incidentally? All of that and more was just incidental unimportant stuff that was a byproduct of annoying Jinshi? That's a bold stance to take.

Little fact that the anime doesn't reveal (they cleverly censor it with her hair over her face) but MaoMao's mother's nose is eroded and gone (open sores on the face can distroy the surrounding skin tissue). It's a revolting sight and further elaborates just how awful her fate is. Also syphilis causes dementia and other mental problems so sad to say MaoMao's mother doesn't remember much except certain things like the lullaby she was humming and "Go" the game she would always play as a courtesan.

Neither in the novel or in the manga of the Nekokurage version is it mentioned who he saw or for what he went to that place, but in the second version of the manga the Kurata one it is shown that he saw the former concubine Ah-Dou only to drink she was disguised as a man, Kurata asked for permission and authorization from the author Natsu Hyūga to add that scene

Ok there is a theory never confirmed that the granny from the brothel is maomao actual granny, that would explain why her mom is still in there even If she cant work, granny Just kept her daughter closer and her grandaughter too

It's certainly possible, but it's not entirely necessary. At a minimum Maomao's mother having been born in the brothel and would have been like family member to Granny in the same way that Maomao is to Joka, Pairin and Meimei. In general close quasi-familial relationships always develop in environments like this, they're in it together in a society that is commodifying and marginalizing them. The big factors for determining whether or not Maomao's mother would be discarded or protected as she is would likely be the degree to which she was perceived to have 'betrayed' the brothel 'family'. The degree to which the women there would be angry with her versus the degree to which they pity her or think "that very well could have been or still could be me". Clearly they still have a good degree of affection for her despite everything so they're willing to keep her safe.

It's interesting to me that no one ever really seems to pick up on the implication of Meimei, who adores Maomao as a little sister, and seems to display fondness for Maomao's (presumptive) mother relaying "that offer" after meeting with Lakan and saying she sees no downsides to it. Lakan is a long time regular customer whom Meimei is the only one able to entertain there so you'd think she'd have a decent understanding of him as a person, and Meimei seems to low-key endorse "that offer" for Maomao. Perhaps because it's somewhat incongruous with expectations going into it, but I find it interesting.

As an ani only, there are several other hints in earlier episodes, but her older sister telling maomao about 'that offer' was enough for me

I never saw it as her endorsement of the offer. It’s always seemed obvious to me that she has some kind of feelings for Lakan and also that she understands him more than most after this episode.

A few things (MINOR SPOILERS): (MINOR SPOILERS) (MINOR SPOILERS) (MINOR SPOILERS) DUDE YOU'VE BEEN WARNED, MINOR SPOILERS Maomao's mother is kept because she was so loved by everyone at Virdigris House, from the Madam, to the three princesses, who were the mother's proteges. Maomao is so against/unfamiliar with affection because of her past and it's how she's dealt with her traumas. That's why she reacts the way she does to Jinshi, because she's probably attracted to him, but she tries to keep an affected distance. When she first met him, she thought he was beautiful, and she keeps commenting on his looks, his intelligence, his status. His opinion of her and her opinion of him is important enough for her to talk about them and then to push them aside. Lastly, all the Princesses love Maomao not only because of her mother, but because as courtesans, they can't have children, and by the time they are bought out, they may be too old to have children easily. Maomao, in many ways is a surrogate daughter/younger sister to them all.

lakan is quite high up. they just call him the tactician but that title hides that he is THE Tactitian of the Palace. He outranks the generals and therefore holds the highest military rank in the Palace.

I think Maomao was just extremely curious about the possibility of a resurrection drug existing. Remember how her dad told her to stay away from corpses because her curiosity might lead her down a dark path.

lakan is related to someone we know already in the show his face is unrecognizeable but... his clothes are very recognizeable..hope you catch that later in the backstory of lakan trying not to spoil

One thing to mention about Syphilis is that with todays medical technology if its caught in its early stages of development then it IS treatable and you can make a full recovery. But MaoMao's mother is too far gone even for today's medicine to really help.

I figure Lady Suiren as a Maomao with years upon years of experience dealing with people and palace intrigue. Lady Suiren is a "been there, done that" type of person so she's got maomao's number. I like to think that Lakan was hoping to get Jinshi to ask Maomao about a courtesan's value thinking Maomao would get mad and yell at Jinshi.

Not sure I'd call Suiren *a Maomao* They don't seem to have much in common personality wise. She's pretty sentimental looking back on Jinshi's toys and much more upbeat and prone to smiling. Plus she doesn't seem to have any sort of obsessions or madness going on.
