Oh definitely! The 85mm for a bit more range and having the action happen without getting into it and isolating some subjects….and the 35mm for more context filled shots….capturing moments between people and not just single people with expressions

The speedlite swivels for a reason, should be bouncing the light off the ceiling and/or the wall behind to make the light source bigger, the maglight reduces the output, barely makes the light bigger, you don't need it.

The Magsphere's grip can be heavy and put a lot of pressure on the head of your speedlite causing it to drop unintentionally. It also changes color over time and makes the combination of camera and flash feel heavier. A regular cap can do the same job.

I took your advice, and cut back on all the external flashes for receptions. It scary, but was liberating! Lol I have to address the mix lighting though. (For color). Do you use gels and then meter? Or is this All you need?

Generally I don’t use gels. However there are many times I should. So if you’re thinking about getting some I would totally suggest it.

@@jbivphotography just to clarify, (and not to wrap you up! 😂) when I use the on camera flash with warm lit rooms, on brown skins that red and orange gets out of control! I think a grey card would do the trick, but I would rather get it right in camera. Thank you for the response!!!

Absolutely nothing new, but it helps to have a reasonably low ceiling or pale coloured walls to achieve the best results. I speak from experience as a Wedding photographer during the 1970s - 1980s. I also used a Courtney flash, which was tough, fast and incredibly powerful but could give you a hefty shock if it got too wet.

He’s also not telling you the higher the ceiling is the more work you have to do to get good lighting. If you’re in a building with a low ceiling, the flash will bounce light from the ceiling and soften way better than a high ceiling.

The modifier on there actually helps with high ceilings. That’s why I use it.

Quick question, have you bounced light from magsphere from the white ceiling or the white tent like material? Cos for me only when I bounce lights of ceiling I get soft tone if not magsphere gives but harsh lighting

Yes. All the photos you see were taken using bounce. Basically I have the Magsphere on my camera and point the flash straight up. That way I'm getting bounce off of the Magsphere and also off of the ceiling as well.

Agree, good camera (with good low light autofocus) and fast lens. except for the Magsphere Any basic cheap diffuser would work the same. in fact there is a testing video showing that a piece of tupperware over your flash is indistinguishable from any diffuser. but dont use kitchenware 😎

Hi John! Learned so much from you and have converted to Fujifilm because of you! Love the XT3! Very grateful to have found your channel and such!! I have successfully shot my first two Weddings. Have two more coming up this November thus far (and another one scheduled for Summer 2023)! Looking at upgrading the flash. Would you recommend the Godox V860II (the package comes with X2T wireless trigger) or V860III (this package comes with XPro wireless trigger). Going to get the MagSphere as well!

I'm a professional photographer and I just ordered a 25 euro Nikon with 8 megapixels and fixed lens which I'll prob use for work. Don't think you need this shit to get good photos. The flash maybe in some settings...

Godox has no warranty support or us service center-bought that same flash and it became a paperweight immediately after store return window closed. With speed lights you really do get what you pay for…avoid Godox like the plague!! Also, medium format camera at f1.8 will get three eyelashes of one person’s left eye in focus. Good luck!

F1.7 on medium format on a 80mm lens… that is some thin DOF. Focus would fall off very quickly. If one person is slightly closer to the camera than the other one of them would be out of focus…

I highly doubt the images with barrel distortion were shot with the 80 1.7. Those were shot with a wide angle lens at fairly close proximity.

Obviously the flash is on TTL ? But what mode do you shoot on the camera itself ? I never shoot flash photography and I'm gonna be in a situation soon on a shoot, I just need the camera to do it all for me, I'll worry about composition lol.

I generally shoot the flash on manual. I don't like TTL at all. For the camera I shoot in manual mode as well. Generally I've found around reception time my settings are ISO 800 Shutter 1/200 - 1/250 Aperture wide open and flash power around 1/32 or 1/16

I recommend Flashpoint rebranded Godox gear personally. Godox as a company is so hard to work with and Flashpoint (Adorama) is much better at customer service.

I've never had any huge issues, but it will make it a little bit harder for your photos to be 1000% tack sharp. But generally being wide open isn't that big of a problem. I even shoot my f1.0 lens wide open.

Yes bounce flash is still best. Basically what's happening is that the flash is still bouncing but the magsphere is also giving you coverage close to you and on your subjects.

Yes. You’ll need the grip and the sphere. IDK why but they sale the sphere by itself even though you need to grip to hold it on your flash.

Great work, use an error to pissoff and a right thing to teach, that's the future, also it's not wrong to shoot with that cost, means you got money from works or can afford that which we should be happy and proud of, I aspire on having that kind of gear
