Great video! Do more like this. I’ve been using sonar since the black & white 160 pixels days and I’m still trying to figure it out completely. Many times, I catch fish in areas where I don’t see any arches and don’t catch them when I do. 🤷🏼♂️
Even the less expensive sonar out there is very capable. I can make a single pass over an area with my helix unit and obtain all the info I need. Great tips on the 2d sonar.
Thanks Randy. I recently started using a fish finder and didn't know the difference in the color bands on the bottom. I've caught fish using it but this make a difference now.
Randy, I wanted to say, thank you for sharing incredible insight as to fishing tools that 95% of the fishing community have access to! I get you, keep it reel so I can keep realin!
Good one Randy. I have a small, simple Garmin striker 4 on my kayak. It's small but works great for me. It does a lot for such a small one. All I need.
Thank you Randy. Is it possible for you to do another in depth video on this please?? Where to cast, in comparison to what is on screen, etc. I've searched and searched and I just don't get it when I'm out there. The screen is a history of what you've passed already??? I would love an in depth video. I'm sure I'm not alone. Thanks!
Drop a waypoint (or a marker buoy) on the structure (high spot, dropoff or whatever) (or cover, like a fallen tree or brush pile on a big flat) then move off and cast to it. Much better if you also have GPS. Problem is, some percentage of the fish move off when you drive over them, so it's better to sneak up on them. And if you are able to direct your sonar beam ahead of the boat, you know exactly where the structure or cover (and fish) are. Hence, Livescope.
Randy you have been on this ride before. This time ,sorry you are wrong. The settings you recommend are just not even basic. Same rant as the last setting show you posted. A good moderate cost SI saves time & really helps finding fish. I am 72 years young. We can remember when flashers were condemned as not needed & dont work. They really didnt but another story ! Come on Randy, Get with the SI program. If nothing else, Lots of fun !
I catch 3-4lb smallies In my clear NH ponds with my 100 dollar garmin 2D unit on my 300 dollar kayak. When you see arches over rock in 15-25 feet. You know it’s going to be a good day.
I run a helix 9 si gen 3 at my console and a helix 7 di gen 3 up front. I use the si to find cover or structure but I always use 2D to idle over the fish. I learned how to offshore fish with 2D and I'm confident using it. I will say that linking the two units to share way points is 10 times more efficient then throwing out a bouy. I hated reeling in those buoys from 25' of water to change locations.
People are missing the point. Yes in tournament fishing all tools are valuable to a certain extent. Sooner or later it will turn into shooting fish in a barrel and at that point it will no longer be fun. Fans will move on and the tournament will start to lose numbers. It’s a life cycle all sports go through. I’m saying that but I do agree in using whatever tool is necessary to do your job! If it’s your likely hood then either do with or do without it. It’s up to you. I believe what Randy is saying is geared more to the actual fans of fishing who are bombarded with the notion that you need the following. Normal people don’t need these and yes some can afford them and that is their choosing but you don’t really need them. Some take the enjoyment of doing things oldschool and get great satisfaction of figuring out what’s best. These are the true purest. Im no one to judge, I have some expensive equipment too and I have found that I use them less and less as I have gotten pretty good in my neck of the woods. I just like going out and spending my day fishing with my dogs whether I catch a lot of fish or no fish. No need to start bashing people for their perspectives. Go out and enjoy fishing as we have a limited time in this world. Enjoy yourselves to the fullest.
Good stuff Randy I'm not much into that live scope still im old school I remember when all we had was a flasher them young boys don't know nothing about that when you had to read the water with your mind....
…there are many variables that go with locating these fish. The right kind of bottom, is there bait with them, etc etc etc. The most important lesson I learned with fish finders is that it doesn’t mean the fish will bite.
I don't need a different rod and reel for every lure either, but it sure helps. ;) That being said, you gotta start with the basics, or you are missing a huge part of the picture, and 2d sonar plays a big part in the basics.
Mr. Blaukat. Great content once again. What knot or knots do you use for monolfilament line? I use monofilament for everything but flipping. Look forward to your reply.
This is a great on the water video and thanks for showing us these settings!! All I have ever used is 2D sonar and some of the sonar units that I have used are waayyy old but they work!! There is no need to spend big $$$ on livescope, it's not worth it.
I'm with you Randy on 2D, I grew up with Flashers and Paper Graphs, so 2D is fine for me !!!! Live Scope and all of that is Cool , but no way in heck am I going to spend $10 - $20k on Electronics !!!! Thanks Randy 😎🙏👍
Who knocked I said it is cool, but way too rich for my pocket book. Also Add up two too three units on the Bow and two to three units on the drivers counsel and the Pan Optics system and tell me what that adds up too ? Most Pros not All most are running at least 4-5 units with live scope and then add that cost up. And many not All many average anglers, Weekend, Club Fisherman, and Smaller series Anglers are running at least three to four units. That’s not $2,500. The pan optics system itself without the unit is $1,500 - $2,000K without the unit, with a unit your looking at a total of $4,500 - $5,000K. Times that out by three to four units and units that are 12” plus screens. Minimum too $15-20k. I think it’s Amazing Technology, I’m just can’t justify for Myself, me, not you, or anyone else, just Me too spend that kind of money 💰. Remember, Key word, me, not you or others. And if you or any of us truly knows how too Fish and use a Standard style Graph, it is not a necessity too catch fish. Have a Blessed Sunday evening.
Assuming that the unit you demonstrate is at the console and the transducer is on the transom, where are the fish relative to boat position as they show up on the far right of the screen? Thanks for your tutorials....working on getting better again this year.
Man I would go into debt trying to keep up with the Jones'. I'm not going to finance anything fishing related. Ive got a 15 to 20k budget for a boat. Hoping to get a nice aluminum boat with a 150hp and hopefully some electronics. If not I will have to cash flow each piece of electronic as I go. Was thinking about no electronics for a year and just shallow fish.
Is it better to know the fish are under the boat or out in front I get to fish once to twice a week Just would like if it’s worth the time and a lot of money to get live scope
The vast majority of fisherman are fishing shallows near the bank and cover they see with their eyes and not on the screen under the boat and the vast majority of fish are caught in the shallows.
Thanks for the 2D sonar settings. As far as the other technology goes, if you consciously decide to not use legal, available technology, you're going to compete at a disadvantage. That goes for electronics, boat horsepower and type, baits, etc. To each his/her own though.
Guess I’m old school. I bank fish and estimate depth by counting how long it takes a weight to sink. All these boat and sonar folks are pricing the average guy out of the sport. ;-). Just kidding. lol
I truly don’t understand why you insist on 2d as the only option when your boat literally comes with SI. A guy can get a nice SI graph and transducer for 4-500 nowadays. If you only scan with 2d and ignore the SI you are going to waste a bunch of time idling and only seeing what’s right under the boat. For most guys who work for a living and don’t have a bunch of time on the water, learning to use SI can save you hours of graphing time
You are correct. I agree. Why does Randy rant on about what we dont need, He knows about fishing for sure. Setting on a plotter, not so much. No wonder he does not use down & side.
@@pauleyplay I don’t understand the pride in using only 2d to earn street cred amongst the “must be nice” broke boy bass fisherman. The “would be pro if I had that stuff” crowd.
@@BobSmith-bi2mn I’m not sure what your point is by trying to attack the messenger and ignoring the message. If you’ve watched any of my past videos on the topic, you would know this goes will beyond that
I am an old school angler, age and otherwise.. These “scopes,” even 2D, should be outlawed.. In the “ole” days, we had to depend on our brains (and educated guesswork) to catch fish.. And, we did well.. Our fisheries are are tooooo pressured.. Hunt, but fairly..
Dude!! You ever stop to think that the guys you're competing against lose fish also. I mean seriously if no one ever lost a fish you may have finished 50th in the points standings instead of 13th...
I don’t know why you keep saying livescope costs tens of thousands of dollars. You can get a 9 inch graph with livescope and a transducer that does down, side, and 2d for $2000. At least be honest about the cost of it without extreme exaggeration.
@Paul Van Tries how ever many you want that's what it's great about this country. I fish 15-20 small tournaments a year in Wisconsin just bought a new boat and have 2 helix 12's on front helix 15 on console mega 360 mega live probably won't use this technology that much but I have it I guess. I understand don't need all this stuff look at John cox. I dont but stuff cause other people have it I buy it cause I enjoy fishing and get alot of enjoyment out of it along with my wife and mom. If everyone worried about themselves instead of getting jealous world would be a better place
Enough w this garbage. I love your career randy but you need to embrace change. Those that don't gel left behind. Your a great fisherman but your not going to change the game.
You and many others are missing the point. I’ve never said the new tech wouldn’t help you Catch More Fish. It will, but so will a stick of dynamite. My stance is I feel that it’s bad for the sport and takes away much of what fishing is. My position on this is well documented in my past videos
