I brought my BC home 3 Christmas's ago and he was just a baby then, we had always raised labs, lots of them, but this little guy was a challenge, but in good hands, because both me and my husband are both real dog lovers, Riley is his name and he has been such a loving addition to our home, he is so gorgeous and smart and we play and play and train him, we are lucky we have a lot of land out here, and he is able to experience the countryside. I just love him so much, it is hard to put it into exact words, but he is one of the best dogs we have ever had. I find myself smiling on my way home from work because I am thinking I am on my way to getting to see my boy!

So does that mean that a lot of land is good for border collies? I really want one, I live in London now so I don't think it's fair to get one here. After I do my GCSE's and we move house near the seaside and a large garden, will be better. With BC's what kind of mental stimulation do u need? Can you give me an example of which a 16 year old could manage be herself with a Border collie? I'm a bit shy myself so I'm not keen on classes. I'm ready to take on challenges and getting a dog will lure me outside for hours. When you leave your border collie by himself how long is it and what do you leave for him to keep himself entertained? I'll do anything for my dog. I'm so keen to get one.

@@unaestrella1876 I have a 13 week old Border Collie,hes the third that Ive had.They are brilliant dogs,quick to learn,but can be headstrong,I put that down to their intelligence lol They think for themselves the way no other dog does,so that can be a challenge.But they are so worth it.they make loyal and loving companions.I wont lie and say my latest one has been the easiest :) But we have a definite bond,and he wont let me out of his sight.We are getting there and I wouldnt swap him for anything.I got him when he was barely six weeks old,he is off working farm dogs,but isnt expected to herd anything but me and my 2 cats :) So loads of exercise and mental stimulation,I feed him with a feeder toy for his evening meal,so that he has to work for it and he loves it.I also have a large garden,so after every walk,not off lead yet,we play fetch,then have a play time in the house,when he gets older ,the walks will get even longer than they are now,too soon can be bad for their growing bones,but again we will get there.Anyone looking to have a BC in their lives should be aware that theyre extremely active and need an outlet for that energy on a regul;ar basis,but the companionship and bond that results from that is so worth it.PS I love my wee hooligan lol xx

Excellent video on Border Collies and as a dog trainer for over 20 years I see all the time people have this breed cooped up in the house and then call me when they develop problems. I have 2 Border Collies myself and they both get run not only with playing fetch, but chasing me around the neighborhood at least twice a day and sometimes I see that still isn't enough for them.

We have a border collie, and he is a very intelligent and loving dog. We throw the ball for him because he loves to chase after it, then he brings it back for us to throw over and over and over again. We also take him on a daily 2 mile walk which leaves him ready for his evening meal and finally allowing him to relax for the evening. He lives indoors with us, but with a lot of exercise and love, they are just fine. Remember; they need a purpose. Something to do, so be sure to play with them and allow them a lot of exercise. They make wonderful companion dogs.

I've had five border collies in the last 18 years (currently have two). I wouldn't consider owning any other breed. My first was unfazed by fireworks, but wasn't keen on shotguns. I'd leave the back door of the Land Rover open, and if he got bothered, he'd just and lie in there, like it was his den. My second hated fireworks, and would tremble and look for comfort, but she got very excited by the guns when I took her shooting and enjoyed it immensely. All five of my collies have had very different personalities.

I suspect it has something to do with the frequency and duration of the sound. My Bordercollie is in actual pain when he hears the church bell ringing but doesn't care about gun shots from hunting rifles or even explosions. Fireworks does scare him though. Especially the whistling sounds. The bells from another church which has a deeper tone doesn't bother him.

I have an Aussie/Border collie cross, she is amazing, a lot of work but she is my therapy and service dog, she has saved my life. Plus she has a family that keeps her busy. Not a breed for a first-time dog owner or with lots of little kids. I have used her play as my therapy and my training with her otherwise with my disability this would be impossible. She is very smart, regular smarty pants. I have her tire herself physically and mentally but not totally otherwise she can be a bear running on fumes, I make her wait and use it on me when we are out in the city, she is getting it she is young but she does so much. We also make our dogs go outside with us in all weather so they know they have to.

had 3 all of them great dogs, they are a great breed but they have so much energy. mine are currently running through my house chasing each other barking. make sure you can accommodate a strong willed dog that needs to be walked a lot and excercise at least a hour minimum a day. I try to walk mine 2 hours and play ball for 2 hours every day. these are very special dogs and they all need to be with owners that love them and can handle them. they can be the best thing in your life but they can also be destructive if they do not have a job or do not get enough excercise. they need training and love to train. they are so special please do not get this dog if you cant handle this breed. they have such a big heart you are going to break it when you rehome them after building a bond with them.

Many people say go for a walk and play at least 2 hours, but I think it's not enough. I have a mix papillon, I take her out 3 times a day each walk about 20 - 40 min, so it's already 1 or 1'5 hour, plus always play at home after breakfast, a bit lunchtime and evening. Also sometimes training and" brain" games. Easily additional 1 hour, so at least 2 hours activities a day for a small dog, but often around 3 hours, and even so, if there is more time, she could play all day (when we go for a hike for example, she runs for hours and after a short nap she is active again. I would imagine for Colies 4 hours is the minimum activity time, but they need more than that . Especially when they're young.

I know that pose! My Tess would get into that pose when she spotted the hens and roosters from the farm behind us settle in the peach tree behind our deck. When they got down to grabble for food, she'd take off and scatter them and they'd fly back home. She never hurt them. I took to a park that had ducks and geese and she'd run around the pond, not only herding them into it and not letting them out or not letting them into it. The kids thought Tess was funny til she decided they needed herding too. I put a stop to it and said "time to go home, "Tess". Wore her out and she napped til dinnertime. She also taught my new pup how to be my diabetic therapy dog before she died at 16.

So we go hiking in the woods every day to meet his requirements and we play a lot of games and puzzles together at home to challenge him mentally. I love to spent so much time with him. They are sweet, loyal and extremely smart dogs. But if you are not able too meet the required amount of attention and excercise this is really not the breed for you.

How do you calm a border collie during storms? My girl comes to me and paws my arm awhile before a storm approaches. My other dogs are fine, storms don't bother them. But she is much more sensitive than they are. I tried a thunder shirt but it doesn't help. And I cuddle and pet her during a storm until it passes. This helps her some. She wags her tail, stops pawing at me. But sometimes she walks around me or lays down on me for a little bit before getting back up and repeating this process. I know she's scared. I've even tried playing music to drown out the sound of the rain. But it doesn't help her. Is there a better way to handle a border collie during storms? Thank you

Oh my god. Coco was given to us when she was a pup, herein the Philippines puppies that hasnt got any breed is just given away for free for adoption. I always wondered how smart she is. I never taught her a thing she just seems to understand. Always so energetic and just restless. But then we got her leashed bc our neighbors gets pretty scared she runs so fast and so much (Our neighbors just gets pretty scared if they see dogs on a leash, little do they know she is harmless :( ). She is about 4 years old now. I never knew she was a Border Collie until i looked all possible breeds up. I never trained her, made her run so much outside, never gave her the things that her body needs. T_T Is she too old to do all these? she's sooooo used to being inside the house. Never outside the gates, or if we take her out its just very minimal ground. I feel so badddd someone help me out, what more could I do for coco? TT

Just take her out! Start gradually so she'll get used to it. She might take some practice on a leash. (You can find good ideas on RU-vid about leash training, too!) If she seems happy about it right away, go for it! Don't be anxious about it, though, because she'll pick up that there's something to be nervous about. You will also need to train her to "come," and you can start that inside, if you want to. Use treats, have fun! 😃

Everyday my wee Scots mum was, very quickly taught by her collie, Sam just how smart, loyal and loving he was......they became inseparable, he her shadow, she his.... and when he was recalled for gods new tasks, my mum was devastated but she quickly realized that the two of them would be reunited when she too was recalled, he would be waiting at the gate for her arrival and then off they would go.....! He collected walnuts off her walnut tree, setting them at her feet, then she opened a few and shared them and then gave him other tasks which he happily accomplished. She it his Canada Post “saddle bags” on him and sent him to wait for at the very end of her driveway to lay down, greet the mailman and accept the mail, it being placed inside his “saddle bags” and then bringing it to her front door, using a paw to ring the doorbell to tell her of the arrival of her mail. His reward was her praise and a bowl full of cool fresh water....

Studies have shown that noise sensitivity may well be largely genetic in nature. Some fears can be due to traumatic experience associated with certain sounds. There are breeds which seem predisposed to be fearful of loud sounds. They are mainly affect by thunder, wind in the trees, fireworks, loud traffic noises. You lucked out, getting a Border collie who is not overly sensitive to loud sounds. My one Border collie was fearful of fireworks and the sound of gun shots. She passed away. Our new Border collie has no fear of sounds. I have a 4.25lb dog who never turns a hair at any kind of loud noises and he has excellent hearing.

You don't want to piss off a Border Collie. If a Border Collie can tackle a grown cow, just imagine what they do to a measly human. I had one for ten years until some son-of-a-bitch poisoned him and another dog. My Border Collie Patches was incredibly smart. If he got bored, he liked to sneak up on me and poke me in my calf muscles. He knew how to do it just right so I would fall. He thought it was funny. He argued with me and argued with me for ten years. And he was very bossy. Most of my back yard was fenced in and I had a doggy door in my back door. The doggy door was big enough for me to crawl through; which I had to do a few times because I managed to lock myself out of my house. When I was home and Patches wanted to go outside, I'd have to open the back door so he could go out. He could go through that doggy door; but no, I had to open the door for him. And if I didn't open it fast enough for him, he'd jump up on me and bite me. He would just nip me. He never broke the skin. Every once in a while, he'd bite a little bit too hard. He didn't mean to. But I would have to scold him, "Don't bite so hard." I never yelled at him. But if he bit me a little bit too hard, and if I scolded him lightly, he'd fall down and I'd have to rub his belly and tell him, "You didn't hurt Papa. Papa going to be OK. Papa not mad at you. Papa still loves you. You didn't do a bad thing." Then he'd be OK. Border Collies get some of their skills from wolves. My brother's wolf Ricky died this past July. Ricky just loved me. Ricky was fourteen and a half years old. Ricky just loved to bite my right elbow. He never bit hard, and he never drew blood. Back in July, I went to a funeral. I had a wolf, Sara. She died in June 2018. She was twelve and a half. My brother had Ricky and his brother, Rocky. All our wolves are dead now. Anyway, I went to this funeral this past July right after Ricky died. The guy my brother and I got our wolves from was at the funeral. And when we get together, we always talk about wolves. Ricky, Rocky, and Sara's daddy's name was Spirit. He was an Arctic wolf. Well at this funeral in July, Art happened to mention that Spirit always liked to bite Art's right elbow. It's a love bite. I miss my Border Collie Patches and my wolf Sara.

Exactly my situation, and I really mean exactly. Running, work and the spare time are the same. I wouldn't worry too much, if you tire the dog before work and supply it with a variety of toys (rotate the toy variety day by day - can be same toys, but not the same every day) then they will be fine throughout the day. After work and your daily chores if you spend some more time with your dog is great, but if you can't do that every day they'll get used to it. Source: experience with my own collie.

I have a border collie, and if you go jogging you could take the dog with you and take them on long walks. Just be prepared for hours of throwing balls and toys because they're really energetic. Even when they have long walks they still need something to do. To be honest not many other breeds can keep up with you and your life style, but with that said you'll gain one of the most loyal companions you'll ever have! Just to add to what I typed .. you jog about 5km per day .. a Border Collie can run that at full sprint without stopping lol

You have more than enough time and energy to keep a border collie very happy. Good luck to you.

Everyone ist saying 'they need lots of exercise, throwing ball etc'. Beware of throwing to many balls, otherwise u get a ball junkie, which is seeking for the kick. Most importantly the first thing ur border needs to learn is to rest.

How to get low energy border collie that is not from showing line?
@michaelo1929
@michaelo1929 5 лет назад
peace and love No such thing as low energy border collie. They are bred for their herding capabilities, so they naturally tend to be high energy. We take ours for a daily 2 mile walk. Minimum. We also throw the ball for him to chase, so in evening, he is spent. These are some ways which allow a dog to release energy. They are not meant to be kept indoors as a lap dog. They will destroy your home, so be sure to exercise and play with them, should you choose to adopt a border collie.

BC's have the largest heart of any k9 breed just for this energetic endurance. They can run 30+ min. without stopping. I think, "Low energy BC" may be an oxymoron. BC=Be Creative! Best,

@kezkezooie8595 5 лет назад
You can get a calm BC but never a low energy one. In fact, most adult BCs have very calm natures. They calm down as adults but still need both a lot of physical exercise plus mental stimulation.

I know how you feel. Lost my BC girls Gem (1/2 BC), Tess, her son JackBNimble, his girl friend Little Bo Peep, and Gypsy Rose Lee. Miss all my babies. Can't get any more til I can walk-knee sprain-keep up with her, and bathe her. Will be a while. Lived in the burbs, but we got nice walkies around the neighbourhood. They liked to herd me around my basement apt. and weren't that destructive as they were kept busy playing Border Collie soccer, chasing Frisbee discs and tennis balls, unstuffing peanut butter from their Kong's, etc. Except for JackBNimble and Bo Peep-outside babies-they slept inside with me. Gem liked to sleep in the hallway between my parents' bedroom and the hallway steps when I was away at NGC college.

@diane9247
@diane9247 5 лет назад
That's certainly not their preferred weather and I wouldn't get one if I lived in consistently hot weather. But, you could get a smooth coat (short fur) one. They might stand warmer weather than a long-haired one.
@kezkezooie8595
@kezkezooie8595 5 лет назад
Border collies are usually ok in hot weather but if they have a very thick coat you can clip them (a friend of mine used to do that for her BC in summers in western NSW Australia where it gets very hot). If you want a good working dog for very hot climates then short coated kelpies are good. They're an eye dog like a BC, very intelligent, very good range and easily trained. Like a BC though, if you have them as a non working pet, you MUST give them mental stimulation so they can use their problem solving skills and exercise or they can develop problem behaviour.

My Border has caught & ate 6 smaller iguanas, caught a squirrel, eats various small fish, and he still chases trucks, motorcycles, police cars, garbage trucks, any big loud object he wants to chase, he is almost 7 years old when will this craziness stop LOL

I think ur BC is depressed or bored. U need to do something about it by providing activities that will stimulate him/her physically and mentally. BCs are very smart dogs and they are the most active breed. If they don't get their energy out, they will look for ways even to the point of being destructive.

the border collie could be a gourd dog?
@diane9247
@diane9247 5 лет назад
Guard dog? Not really guarding, but they can alert you if there is something unusual happening. They will bark or suddenly look up at the door, for example. But, very few border collies would chase someone or try to bite them.
@kezkezooie8595
@kezkezooie8595 5 лет назад
They're just not that sort of dog, sorry. They may alert you as the other commenter said, but mine never barked and would be curious of strangers but was never territorial.

Cosima Schade No, that isn't a BC, but there are brown BCs. They're bred for behaviour, over looks, so their physical appearance can vary more than other breeds. :)

They run in different colours, even in merles like Aussies. It peeved me that black/whites are often the only ones shown like the AKC only ones those seen and they make owners of Aussies dock their tails. I had a red/white girl-Gypsy Rose Lee- who had a right blue eye and a left brown eye. Also beautiful.

I get it....Border collie is not for urban areas...needs lot of time hence not for everyone. If you have urban life, stick with labradors.

Raju We live in the city, and our border collie lives indoors with us. We also take him on a daily 2 mile walk as well as throw the ball for him to chase. You could have a border collie in an urban area, you just have to exercise him/her daily, and they'll be just fine.
@bouquetoffood8918
@bouquetoffood8918 5 лет назад
Raju~~ Also, you could consider a BC cross or mix. I was a full time, full service dog sitter for 5 years in the DC area. My favorite client dog was a BC crossed with APBT (Barkley). He was the smartest dog I have ever known. Last month I rescued a BC pup that is mixed with probably Beagle+/ Lab from a local rescue. They posted him as "LabRet" and although BoBo is still a pup (4-5 mos), there is no doubt he's mostly BC (smart-intuitive!) I love him!

Exactly Sean even the name Border Collie is wrong, its recorded in 600AD in Irish text that monks kept and bred Collies but they where called (coileán) which in Irish means helper. The British then renamed them border collies but their really Irish Collies.
