As a normal engineering student, do I have to take CHEM 120/121 as well? or this course is specifically for PBME students?
@EngineeringStories
@EngineeringStories 3 года назад
It is specifically for PBME students! As a general engineering student, you take CHEM 154 first semester.

Hello everyone, UBC Okanagan student here (yes, UBC has two campuses, one in Vancouver and another in Okanagan). From my experience, the most stressful first-year course is where you have to design things (at 1:14). It is stressful mainly because you really don't know how much is enough. Often, my team and I ran into situations where we didn't know if we should spend more time adding features and polishing our design or stop. I ended up spending 80% of my time on that course alone.

Laptop reccs? Also what kind of supplies do we need for first year. Just notebooks and pens?
@EngineeringStories
@EngineeringStories 2 года назад
For laptops, UBC Engineering recommends the following specs: PC (Windows 10) I7, RAM Minimum of 8GB (16GB preferred), STORAGE 1 TB harddrive (SSD preferred), Good Graphic Card (gaming cards are the best for running SolidWorks). If students prefer using the Mac platform, the laptop still needs at least 8GB of RAM but can run Parallels Desktop or Boot Camp to run dual (Windows) operating systems. Regarding any supplies required, you'll find out from your courses on the first day as you'll need to purchase textbooks and potentially some lab gear.

Great vid! Quick question: about how many courses per semester does a typical first-year engineering student take?
@EngineeringStories
@EngineeringStories 3 года назад
First year engineering student typically take 6 courses in their first semester and 6 courses + 1 lab course in the second semester!
@sethburks8920
@sethburks8920 3 года назад
My first semester was 17 hours meaning 5 classes, 2 labs .

I'm in IB taking Math HL, Chem HL and Physics SL. Would you recommend claiming credits if I get 6's? I've heard some say its better to just take the class anyway in case you'd be missing something.
@EngineeringStories
@EngineeringStories 3 года назад
Hi Lucas! I would recommend talking to an academic advisor about this, as they might have more insight as to further implications of claiming the credits. That being said, I have quite a few friends who took similar IB classes in high school and didn't claim the credits, in the end meaning that they learned the extra material in class they might not have seen and the rest of it was easier for them since they had already seen it. Personally, I would say that it's worth taking first year physics since it is fundamental no matter which major you pursue, but for chem, if you're thinking of majoring in something that doesn't really use it later on, it might be best to just claim those credits. As for math, I think the material is fairly similar, so that one could go either way. Hope this helps! - Karolina

@lucas7010 3 года назад
Okay, thank you so much! I will make sure to ask an academic advisor about all this. I would hope to enter MECH 2 and eventually mechatronics. If I claim the credits I assume I just have a lighter courseload in year 1, right? Also, do you know if would those credits count toward all my math and physics courses or just a few?
@EngineeringStories
@EngineeringStories 3 года назад
@@lucas7010 Yes, claiming credits will signify a lighter course load for first year! You can find which credits will count towards which courses here! academicservices.engineering.ubc.ca/degree-planning/transfer-credits/ When you speak to the academic advisor, they'll be able to tell you specifically which courses you'll be able to skip.

How much time does each class take per day or week? and how much homework/studying should I expect to be doing to excel? I heard that its roughly 9 hours of studying per weak for a 6 class term. is this a accurate estimation?
@EngineeringStories
@EngineeringStories 2 года назад
Classes are usually 3 hours a week (3 1 hr classes or 2 1.5hr classes). For studying, it really depends on the class and your strengths. Some weeks you may have a bunch of assignments /midterms so you'll be studying a lot more. While other weeks will be very light and you may just have to catch up with missed work or take a bit of a break.

How difficult will it be to get into Computer engineering in the second year at UBC. Will it be very competitive and difficult to get ?
@EngineeringStories

It is based on your first year grades, so the best advice we can give is to do well in your courses and take advantage of academic supports like free tutoring!

I suggest Quizlet and creating mindmaps. Being able to see how the topics are connected really helps me understand and better utilize the lessons that are taught in class

Is it true a student can take two years to complete 1st year Engineering and about 10% of first year UBC Engineering students choose to take two years to complete 1st year Engineering? What is the long term significance of this? How does this impact a student?
@leighannarizarri8267
@leighannarizarri8267 Год назад
yes! it’s true! BUT that means the next 3 years will be crammed. also, it is wayyyy more difficult to apply to specialties! if i were u and ur tryna complete ur degree over 5 years…push thru ur first year and the next 4 years will be easier
