The most dangerous fault in the Bay Area is, as of now, due to fail at any time. The huge ebb and flow of population in the Bay Area means an enormous number of people are unaware of the risk and unprepared for what will be the largest quake to be unleashed under a modern metropolis. Science Editor Brian Hackney traces the fault and USGS seismologist David P. Schwartz explains what lies ahead in this important and entertaining look at the Hayward Fault. Dave Stoelk contributes an eminently watchable primer on what to do to be prepared...and it's much more than just batteries and flashlights.

My sister used to live pretty much right on top of the Hayward Fault in milpitas. It Always made her a little nervous so she moved to the desert. now she lives in the palm springs area, pretty much right on top of the San Andreas Fault.

I drove the entire fault line in the Alaskafornia tour bus we drove from Fremont up to the memorial stadium and my oldest brother and I and my dad went to the stadium I was so excited in my heart to be standing on the Hayward fault and that was a historical moment for me

This fault is so ignored by mainstream media.

@@priscillaross-fox9407 some of them seem to dismiss it as just a crack. The stupidity is costly.

@@priscillaross-fox9407 mainstream media only cares what's in trumps time zone and demographic appeals that get them paid. This isn't one of the things they're smart enough to speak about more.

Every time I drive up 24 passing lake Temescal I think about crossing it. But then I used to get nervous driving on the old Cypress structure before '89.. it always scared me looking so flimsy I would feel relieved I got through it without a quake.. When it happened I thought.. "uh huh, I knew it"!

so are there any low frequency monitoring stations built and spread out along the bay area faults similar to what was in use in 1989. measuring the ultra low frequency waves probably created by the piezo effect of quartz crystals breaking and releasing stress but adding stress to the areas around the beginning of the fracture.

by the way.. investing in a new battery for the computer UPS back up power boxes but having lamps plugged into them also will keep your plug in lamps on while trying to get out during the quake. i have a floor lamp. cell phone charger and alarm clock plugged in to mine.. a bigger one with a TV that is hooked to an external antenna.. so i can get a few minutes of NEWS after the power goes out. the people in my building freak out when the power goes out in the area i live in.. and there i am sitting in my living room with the lights on watching the TV.

I've shared this on my FB wall, I hope some people pay attention, but sadly very few will...Living in South Florida, we know about hurricanes, and there are always always those that do not heed the warnings...sadly, folks do your homework.

What a great program, so fun and informative!! May I ask what year this was broadcast? Concerning fashion etc, it seems to be around 1990? :)

Well they said it was 140 years after 1868 so this probably came out in 2008

"In a sense, it's [the San Pablo Bay] the official end of the Hayward fault..." The vagueness is likely because the Rodgers Creek fault -- that runs from that point up into Sonoma, right through Santa Rosa into Windsor, is actually a continuation of the Hayward fault. They meet up via a jog under water in the bay. Seems very likely there is a connection there.

I don't want quakes, hurricanes, tornadoes so I'll just take my chances with the hot and cold weather....you can run but you can't hide from everything
