Should transition to all upgraded Tranche 3 or better and increase UK numbers up to 200. Tranche 3a + AMK + Captor-E + provision for engine upgrades + integration of all weapons from Tornado should be the new minimum standard. This will require many new build air frames and older tranches can be transferred to allies at bargain prices or retired and scrapped for parts. Even if a replacement fighter is developed on time, which is unlikely, late model Typhoons would still be useful until the end of their air frame lives because of their flexibility.
@stupidburp
@stupidburp 5 лет назад
Canada should get in on the new purchases too. The drama with US fighters and trade has gone on too long. As much as I wish a deal could have gone through, Canada can't wait any more. They should immediately place an order for 100 new Typhoons or Rafale to replace all fighters with parts delivered soon for local production and maintenance. The most capable upgraded variants of Typhoon and Rafale are close enough in capabilities that they can choose whichever they prefer.

I wonder, are conformal fuel tanks in the pipeline for the Typhoon? Might free up two wing stations while increasing range. A couple of years ago I also saw a mention in a German aerospace magazine (FlugRevue) that thrust vectored EJ-200 engines were being considered, which - as stated in the article - might reduce drag during maneuvering (not having to give much aileron/rudder inputs),. My prediction - the Typhoon will be in use for the next 20 years and then the government will suddenly remove it from service, close some more bases before the Tempest is ready. We'll then be using the F-35 as a QRA fighter (which it is utterly unsuited for) while the Tempest goes over budget and is delayed for years. It happened with the Shackleton, it happened with the Gannet, it happened with the Harrier, it happened with the Nimrod and now it's happened with the Tornado. We have a very bad history when it comes to reducing our capability in the air before we have a real replacement.

For live fire tests, target tugs. Usually towed (probably drones nowadays). Expensive game though. For training there are missile envelopes within they shouldn't miss that are used in training without live fire. Combining aspect, position, range etc. So you know when a kill is theoretically 100%. Outside those envelopes but inside the missiles range they can potentially be avoided by defensive manoeuvres. Forcing an opponent defensive like this has use cases.

My dad was an air traffic controller in the RAF for about 24 years before we moved to Canada in 1980 and we were based all over England as well as West Germany and Cyprus which was a good adventure as a kid growing up. Pretty sure the Tornado MRC was a good plane designed by Panavia and served the consortium countries well but the Typhoon not only sounds cool but is a very good airplane and seems to be a good platform to upgrade through its service life and maintain its mission superiority. The only thing that would top this aircraft would be if they could of upgraded the airframe and landing gear to make it carrier capable like the french Rafale. Unfortunately for the UK taxpayers and Royal Navy I believe that the much hyped F 35 which is massively over budgeted and over hyped in its capabilities as well as its long term reliability and cost effectiveness will dog the Royal Navy and limit the potential of the new carriers. Although there is much technology in the F 35 the aircraft is a poor example of American military might from Lockheed Martin which will go down as one of the most expensive programs in American history.

AESA-radar - just like the so called "stealth" - is not that magical thing which makes you invincible. The previous radar simply was good enough to not rush the development of a new one. What else is it then? A pair of shoes? Captor E has been delayed massively because of course Germany has caused all sorts of problems. So much so that the UK ended up starting our own AESA upgrade path. The original radar was actually more capable and far more reliable than contemporary PESAs or AESAs - The rapid-moving planar array was chosen to reduce risk early in the program. Captor E will have swashplate mounting unique to Leonardo, giving a field of view far greater than any other AESA apart from Leonardo‘s own ES 05 Raven.
@lordtemplar9274
@lordtemplar9274 5 лет назад
@@glennridsdale577 lol you reply with so much authority and confidence, as if you actually knew what you were talking about. AESA is not only better in terms of range and detection capability, jam resistance, but AESA can also be used for EW and active cancellation for a start. FYI individual AESA beams can be directed in different directions and different frequencies, a swashplate basically means you reduce the amount of real estate you have to fit more antennas, if you are looking left it means you are not looking right, not to mention adding more weight and moving parts adding to costly maintenance and possibly RCS. Usually fighter planes don't fly alone, so the angle benefit of a swashplate is very debatable. Most modern fighters do not bother with this, tbh it's a gimmick that sounds nice on paper. There are more clever ways to increase the angle by adding antennas in the fuselage/wings like on the SU57. I won't even start with newer GaN AESA since I may as well speak in Greek! I am not going to waste my time on this any further and I suggest you do some actual research before you present your uninformed opinions as facts to others. PS I would normally avoid this type of response but seeing as you litter this whole discussion page with so many posts and misconceptions and then blaming the Germans for lack of AESA on Typhoon was a cheap shot and a bridge too far. 😛

@hardwired548
@hardwired548 5 лет назад
@@bobmartin9918 Do you know that both the F-22 and F-35 can't see any other stealth aircraft from BVR? Stealth alone defeats high-frequency (short wave) radar by absorption and deflection it does not defeat low-frequency (long wave) radar. Therefore, to see, track and target stealth aircraft you must have long wave radar but it must also be enhanced to remove all clutter for targeting purposes. Both the AN/APG 77 radar used in the F-22 and the AN/APG-81 Radar used in the F-35 can't see any other stealth aircraft from BVR without enhanced long wave Radar - This is a fact even the US Air force must obviously know! @glennridsdale577 5 лет назад
@@fredsas12 As I said: you obviously know nothing about fighter design or air combat tactics. Eurojet had a flight capable 3D nozzle by 2011. It was never flown. Why not? Because by that time it was clear that TVC and PSM are actually an appalling idea. They are the reason why the Indian Air Force's otherwise very capable Su-30MKIs keep getting their arses handed to them on a plate. So much so that they feel the need to make ludicrous claims in the press. PSM looks very impressive, but anyone moving that slowly in a fight is dead and buried. Air combat is about maintaining energy, and that means speed and/or height. PSM is all about giving that up. You might as well give the pilot a pistol and tell him to blow his own brains out. Did you not notice that the USAF abandoned TVC after the F-22?

But still, we’ve really got to start considering phasing them out now one at a time as they get replaced. Wait a minute… We are developing our own alternative to the F 35 that will fly alongside it? F22 isn't for sale to the UK and Tempest isn't set to enter service until 2035 and knowing how notoriously hard stealth fighter programs are to manage even for the U.S. with unlimited budget and previous experience, it's highly doubtful it will be online by even 2040. And by that time the F35 will be so mature, advanced, cheap and proven in british service it will still be competitive to buy more of them than a brand new design. So yes you will be reliant on the U.S. for the better part of the century at least.

The parachute failed to open and the pilot was killed. This was in 2011. MB were held to be negligent and fined. The problem was partly due to inadequate maintenance and the judge recognised MB's contrition and long and distinguished history of worldwide excellence in its field. The problem has long since been addressed and the Typhoon was never affected directly. Furthermore, tests to the MB ejection seat fitted to the F35 indicated that exceptionally lightweight pilots may experience neck trauma when ejecting at low speeds.
