It worked extraordinarily well the first half of that season: He scored in his first 5 games for Barca, was the top scorer in the team that winter, and if you looked at Barca’s website at the time, he was consistently voted favourite player by the fans. For some reason things soured in the spring. I don’t pretend to know what happened, but the sense is obviously that it was a case of ”this town ain’t big enough for the two of us”. And of course, that conflict could only ever have one winner. In any case, as evidenced by a lot of game-winning goals in this video - not the least the only goal in the first El Clasico - he won La Liga for Barca that season.

Then you could see he was down mentally, I've never seen him like that ever in his career, like in the last half of the season. I assume that "this town ain't big enough for the two of us" was in relation to Pep, right? Zlatan never talked about any problems with Messi, only with Pep.

@@MMerlyn91 Yes, he seemed depressed and somewhat confused in the last few months, very uncharacteristic. And you’re right, by his own account he never had any issues with any of players, not even Leo. (And I don’t think Leo had anything against Zlatan either). But introverts too can have a big ego: I think it’s fairly clearly established - by journalists and writers close to the club - that Leo was unhappy during that first half of the season, and that he convinced Pep to change the system slightly to accommodate him, at the expense of their number 9. (Zlatan being the fan favourite wasn’t just a reflection of his performance, it was of course also a reflection of the fact that Leo was struggling a bit to assert himself that fall and winter. Not that he was bad, just not spectacular). Some even suggest that Pep left Barca because of the sway Leo held over the club. He never had any choice but to axe big Z. Again, I obviously have no way of knowing any of this, but it does make sense where no alternative explanation does. As for what went through Pep’s head at the time, that is the actual mystery to me. It seems a legendary manager should be able to handle conflicts like this easily, yet he failed miserably. More than one have suggested his ”people skills” aren’t on par with his football knowledge. It’s also what Zlatan’s criticism against him boils down to, if you shave off the invectives. :D It is tragic in the sense that playing for Barca was Zlatan’s dream come true. He was deliriously happy those first 6 months. And this debacle of course is the main reason he never won CL. Then again he went to AC Milan and became a better player than he ever was. His development at Milan was staggering, perhaps the greatest leap of his career. Revenge? ;)

How can you say "screw titles" like that? The man won FIVE scudettos, La Liga, Europa League, four Ligue 1 and two Eredivisie, among others, being mvp and/or top scorer in many of them. This is not some folkloric, entertaining player who never won squat, he actually did win a lot.

@@YLB-wk2fg while I could see why most would say that, I personally disagree. I see them as equal, as they are both scary but for different reasons. Zlatan, unlike Suarez, was very mobile and couldn’t make a goal in basically any way imaginable. In that sense, he could be unpredictable. Suarez on the other hand was just a complete striker. Not player, but just a complete striker. He was fast, precise, and could take the ball from any of his teammates to transform it into a goal. He was definitely less of a solo player than Zlatan, but complete in his position he was.

Nah, the very best players win the biggest and most important titles. The sport is about winning, not individual accolades. The truly magnificent make winners out of everyone around them.

@@fatonajdini7865 I agree. No disrespect towards Haaland, he's young and has much going for him. But Zlatan could do stuff on the pitch that no one else could. Haaland also has an extremely good squad around him and the team is constructed perfectly for him to score. Closest thing Zlatan had to such a team was Barca, but even then they def didn't build the team around him and there were many other stars in that team expected to score. I've been looking at Zlatan goals all day now and I see very few tap ins. Stats and trophies isn't everything. Zlatan was and will always remain one of the greatest to ever do it. 💪🦁
