allan holdsworth strikes me as the type of guy that could have walked into any arcade in the world and set the high score on the galaga or space invader machine with like 2 quarters
Hallo Trudy, nice to read. I come from Germany.... Nothing is impassibel. I mean.... Do not search, for a secend Allen. Try and trust the People your Band. And take what you have. Every little thing. Put it in your Stile.. Mlaby you are Super in everything... Go your way...... every Note you Sing or Play.. do with Passion, this is the way. Take all the Musik you ever heard......and Intergrate in you, it kost a lot of time.... But....
Nice one, made me laugh out! Never gonna happen bro, but no harm in getting inspired and doing your own thing. Allan would have certainly wanted that as he himself never wanted to be another copy cat. Btw there are quite a few guitarists even in RU-vid that aim to analyse and achive his sound, why dont you get in touch with them?
A little history People! I saw this performance of this record @ The Palace in Hollywood CA 1988. The Ronnie Montrose band opened this evening. Allan Holdsworth with Jimmy Johnson on Bass and Chad Wackerman on Drums. Guest vocalist was great but slips my mine at this moment. Greatness 🙏 R.I.P. Allan Holdsworth & Ronnie Montrose. ✝️
Some people do not realize that creating and conceiving this kind of music with this level of sofistication harmonically, rythmically and melodically is much more difficult than its execution, which in itself is already incredibly hard to play!
Most people simply do not understand just how incredible he was.... I still can't say with any degree of confidence that I really even do. His music is truly channeled from another dimension. A higher plane.
Couldn't agree more. I discovered Allan Holdsworth many years after studying contemporary classical music, and I was amazed. My ear had become accustomed to complex rhythms and harmonies during my formative years, but hearing Allan play his complex music with such confidence and joy, it was on another level. I was blown away and became an instant fan.
@@bernardoiglesias7067 Feeling is a dad rock invention to keep being formulaic, they say the guitarists that have feeling have to bend 214214185 times per song.
About two months ago, I found out about this man through Friedrik Thorendal, who plays guitar in Meshuggah. I'm so glad I did. Allan's music needs to be heard to be believed.
+Tosca Dacuino yes indeed. allan is leagues far ahead of any musician i can think of. i pursued the ultimate guitarist/musician for the longest time, and once i discovered holdsworth, i knew that i had reached the end of the road.
Just like the preceding comment, I met him after a show in Dayton, OH in 1991 (Gilly's gig; ridiculous🎸). I bought him a beer (yes...a pint) and we, actually, had a conversation. I was in complete awe & he couldn't have been more humble about his....everything! I, still, play his catalogue every day. What a contribution to Music!! RIP!
Ha! I just left a comment to a Michael Williams & next comes your comment. I saw him at Gilly's on the Road Games tour. We talked about a miking/recording cabinet he designed & beer. He loved beer! He liked brewing his own. I would've loved to had a pint or two (3,4,5) of that!
Holdsworth made everything sound better. One of the greatest, most influential musicians ever heard. Thank God he left such an awesome body of timeless work to be enjoyed for generations. Thank you, Allan.
I Remember listening to this baked one night about 20 yrs ago and absolutely blasting off to a fucking space station a million miles away. It was so settled and comforting, like they had been living there for YEARS. Who says that fusion isn't true art? This album paints such a surreal picture, just gorgeous
I was fortunate to hear him play this amazing and bizzare looking instrument...he played this opening track off this album. He made a remark saying with a little luck it will work tonight.I was totally amazed at hearing it, never heard anything like since.Allan may you rest in peace..
There are reasons Allan Holdsworth albums have a small number of songs. Mere human beings cannot handle anymore! Everyone's brain would explode from awesomeness!
You bet! Saw him in a small jazz club in Dayton, Oh. on the Road Games tour. I was full after about 45min. Couldn't digest another another bite! Talked with him after the show about a miking/recording cabinet he designed & beer. He really liked beer! Lol
My favorite allan holdsworth album, this album contains some fantastic guitar solos, great bass playing, wonderful keyboards and some crazy drums, R.I.P., thanks for sharing.
I was lucky enough to meet him at a Synthaxe demo in Manhattan Beach many years ago. After the demo, he asked if anyone there could play bass (he brought his own drummer along; all I know is it wasn't Bruford, damn it!). I had with me my blind friend who's one hell of a guitarist, and I knew he played bass as well, but he refused to raise his hand. So I found a Fender Jazz, tore it off the wall, plugged it in and thrust it into his hands, then pushed him up onto the small stage. He was pissed at me for a year, but got over it... and he held his own for the most part--but how many non-pros can keep up with Holdsworth?
When Holdsworth released "Atavachron" I think we got the first greatest view of his musical concepts beyond the guitar (IMO). He's always said it's about the sound and the music and not about the instrument.
Sure, feeling is very important, but that on an individual basis. The feelings we have about the music when we hear it are uniquely personal. I think we usually assume more commonality in regards to feelings about music than we should. Holdsworth made his statement about the sound of the music over the instrument itself because so many people "listen with their eyes instead of their ears". In other words so many people want to be visually impressed and neglect to focus on what their ears are hearing in terms of melody, harmony, timbre, rhythm, etc. These are the things that should then primarily stimulate our feelings and not so much visual things like how fast someones fingers are moving.
Wow, why would you pick Petrucci as an obvious inferior to Holdsworth? I mean Malmsteen I can understand, he's very one-dimensional. But Petrucci is one of the most versatile guitarists ever, before you even get into technical ability. Not "better" than Holdworth but worthy of listening to alongside him.
I believe it was Ted Templeman who really gave Allan a bunch of shit over the album he made for Warner Bros. He told him he didn’t understand him, how could he wage everyone’s time making the album (Road Games); how ironic! Probably my favorite album by anyone, ever. I’ve heard this story a few times, still can’t process anyone giving Allan crap about anything... Finest guitarist ever, finest music I’ve ever experienced, and just the kindest, humblest, warmest human ever. Ask anyone who’s ever met him! Frank vacated his own studio for a week to allow Allan to record Road Games there, with Frank’s then drummer, Chad Wackerman. Says loads about all parties involved. Thanks Frank for helping make it all possible, thanks Allan for just being who you were.
Love Road Games! My fav Holdsworth. Saw him on that tour at a small jazz club in Dayton, Oh. Talked about a miking/recording cabinet he designed & beer after the show. He loved beer!
A great 4th album from one of the 20th and 21st century's greatest musician/composers. Looking Glass (with the late great Tony Williams on drums) is one of the greatest pieces of music ever. It sounds as fresh, piercing and imperative as it did when first released. Holdsworth is definitely one of a kind and really beyond category.
It's like looking into the future, or music beamed down from a remote planet, way more advanced than ours! No one on Earth can actually play like Allan, or compose like him. Beyond genius if that's possible!!
The people that played with him were so good and understanding too. He and they are more connected to the music universe, for sure. I'll never get tired of this, and will pass it on to friends and my closest people to me, so that they don't miss out on Allan Holdsworth.
In my place, it seems I am the only creature listening FOREVER to this album. I consider the best of alan's great contribution to the music world. It is just too bad that there are only limited avid listeners to his greatness, like me.
Looking Glass is definitely one of my favourites tracks of AH, the guy is a genius, he created a world of harmony on his own, Chad is shining on this record, thanks for sharing
Kaye West is going to be gutted when he realised this is the most beautiful music ever made. But then again, so is Mozart. So, swings and roundabouts. Hello, 200 years time!
Dear Lord, Holdsworth actually decanted some blues licks starting at about 13:08 on "The Dominant Plague," most likely as a musical pun (given the title of the composition).
Seems to sound better and with greater depth of emotion each time I listen...I am not musically sophisticated enough to truly understand what's happening in Holdsworth's music but I love the feeling of patterns swirling, shifting, and developing along with the soaring melodies that seem to hint at some longed for and unseen world.
Even the world's greatest musicians of the last few decades, have no idea how Allan's music works and many of them are able to transcribe and analyse music to a very high degree.
I've come to notice that all geniuses seem to be like antennas, finely tuned in to the cosmic firmament where the sub atomic particles bob and weave our reality into existence. That's what this album sounds like to me. The very essence of creation.
For some reason I never quite got round to adding this disc to my reasonably comprehensive Holdworth collection. Thanks to this posting I have remedied that deficit. Thanks
I saw Allan during his Atavachron tour, many years ago.. I fell in love immediately with him! Great guitarist, great presence, infinite technique. Thanks Allan, for your eternal music... Max
- CREAM RECORDS, 1986- MUSICIANS : Allan Holdsworth (synthaxe, guitars, keyboards) - Jimmy Johnson (bass) - Gary Husband (drums on tracks 1,2,4 & 6), Chad Wackerman (drums on track 3), Tony Williams (drums on track 5), Rowanne Mark (vocals on track 7).
Saw the great Allan Holdsworth for the first time a few weeks ago, although I have been a big fan of his since his days with Tony Williams/Lifetime. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, I love this album, thanks for posting, I have the LP somewhere....what an innovative composer/guitarist, will go down in history as one of the most original players IMO, there are many imitators but only one Allan!
Because of his improvisational techniques, he paints a landscape that you just enjoy for the moment and then it's gone, and that concert will never be recreated because the next day, he can do something completely different. Kind of like building sand castles with his solos, once time passes by, you will never hear those combinations again. Unless it was recorded, damn I should have brought my recorders to all those past concerts I have seen with him
Days? Shit, I'm going on months straight now! Going to need to cycle off for a bit, and clean the ears out a bit before revisiting his music, to get a new perspective on it. Only thing that sucks is that nothing else quite does it for me anymore. Ha! At least not to the same degree.
@@lex.cordis What's funny is that I knew about these musicians years ago, but just didn't make the connection of who they were to each other. I caught Bruford and Moraz in concert in 85...I got to chat with Moraz and watch Bruford tune up his drums.
Bob Fitzpatrick So I am not alone? I can do many things while listening to his music as well. I am just so happy that Allan left us so much music before he passed on. Every time I want to say this album or that album is my favorite, I realize that all of his work is just piece of art after another.
It’s wild to me how ahead of the curve this guy was. The only other place I’ve heard guitarwork anywhere close to this level is from prog metal bands like animals as leaders, the contortionist and fallujah. This dude was doing that stuff in the 70s and 80s. Incredible
I have to agree with the comments of others here. "Ahead of his time" doesn't really apply to music in the same way as it does to other things. We are used to think of our species as always progressing to something better/more advanced as time goes by. But for music it's really not true. In fact the opposite seems more the case. Music in the last 20 years has been on a steep decline in quality, both in composition, arrangement as (ironically) in recording quality due to the 'loudness war'. The best music is definitely in the past, not the future it seems.
did anyone else hear the best blues lick in the entire galaxy at 13:12- in "The Dominant Plague". It blows the snot out of anything YouKnowWhoSlowHand could ever do. I dare say it competes with Jeff Beck on his own territory too!
A to the K A.K.A Holding Worth While Guitar to the next level unfathomable a cry to exist as changing the Universe as beholding The stick called ATAVACHRON and passing IT ON.
