Chad’s great too. I don’t think Allan had his working band be Jimmy on bass, Chad on drums and Gary on keyboards. I know that incarnation played some songs in studio, but not a live band. Those two drummers allowed Allan’s (old compositions)music to remain fresh throughout the years. It was fascinating.

allan looks really relaxed with his steinie here. great start to the solo on 'white line' but he got lost. haha. love that about him. when i saw him in LA he got lost in the solo on 'fred', which is the most basic jam ever, at the end of the solo he turned to me and my housemate and said 'sorry', lol,... i was sitting three feet away from him, his amp gear was on my table...atho, this was in 2010 and bassist bunny brunel and keyboardist were both looking askance at allan with grave concern furrowed in their brows, allan was going downhill in his personal life. i had talked with allan in 2007 and he discussed how his wife had taken his home and studio gear from him in 2000, and was afraid to go out in public for several years.

I was at the show on Sunday, Sept. 27th, 1987. I’ll never forget it and I’ll never forget all you’ve given us, Allan! RIP!

Most people sound the same with a pair of JC- 120s. Allan's art was unique and unstoppable. He could get his own sound out of anything. Those amps can not defy him.

Yep guitarists that have their own distinct sound know how to get it with whatever they have to work with. Allan is a really great example of this.

Absolutely amazing! Very interesting watching Allan playing Synthaxe on Pud Wud - it still looks like something from sci fi! Also interesting that Allan almost exclusively used classical style vibrato unlike almost all electric guitarists. It goes without saying that we miss you Allan, but what an incredible legacy!

I remember seeing Allan in London at the bass cleff in 1986. He appeared on stage with his synthaxe & played the Atavacron material which hadn't been released. It was like seeing & hearing something from a hundred years into the future or from another planet. The word genius can only be used to describe a handful of human beings & that includes Allan. Someone needs to start making Synthaxes again.

His tone is gorgeous here. He's singing through this guitar. Cantible. I just need to buy a steinberger & I'll sound the same 😅

I saw Holdsworth play at the Agora Ballroom in Atlanta back in the early 80's. He shared the bill with Steve Morse. Well Alan was sitting at a table next to me and some big crazy guy with a pro camera came up and gave Alan this giant bear hug and he said something. It kind of looked hostile. Anyway Alan looked all tussled up like he had been violated. He really is a wimpy kind of guy. Did you know he worked in a shoe store in London because he couldn't even support himself being a famous fusion guitarist. There's the real world boys and girls.

Brilliant sound and playing. I saw this line up in Halesowen UK around this time! We met Allan and mentioned that his solos on the synthaxe and the synthesizer player Steve Hunt were too similar. The first of 4 meetings! 😎

It may be around 1989-90, this line up did a lot of touring then. I saw this line up in Sydney (Bridge Hotel, Rozelle) in May 1990. No synthaxe though, it was not overseas-tour friendly...

I think this is during the SAND tour. I saw him in Montreal at the Club Soda in 1987 with this lineup. This video is probably from MuchMusic in Toronto.

Thankyou. I'm a massive fan of this era/line-up - I think Allan was at the peak of his powers (in terms of live material) during this time and footage is incredibly welcome.

totally agree! Allan seemed to have moved to another level in his phrasing, sound(both chordal and solo sounds), and the incredible degree of fire! Always was amazing of course, but between 1987/88-93 was yet another story.....INCREDIBLE! Literally in that Coltrane level of transcendence.
@MetalheadNation
@MetalheadNation 10 месяцев назад
@@vbassoneI agree, but I’d actually extend that a bit from 1987-1995. There are quite a few live bootlegs from 94 and a few from 95 that show that Allan was still at that live prime. It wasn’t until around 1996 or 1997 when he started using the Roland synth pad through his guitars heavily live, which really affected his phrasing and his ability to get fast lines. You can hear how both his sound and playing changed around 1997, on the Leverkusen live album.
@vbassone
@vbassone 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, I'll accept that through 95. To be clear though, Allan still soundede great through the erntire "The Sixteen Men of Tain" period which ran through 1997 as far as the record itself coming out and the touring Allan did in support of that record. I wouldn't say Allan's playing noticeably declined live until the early 2000's to a really noticeable degree.@@MetalheadNation

Thanks for posting a high quality version of this! My notes say that this was recorded in 1993, but I'm not sure that is right, as Allan was touring with Skuli that year, and it's Jimmy playing here. Also, I don't think Allan was using the SynthAxe much live in 1993. Allan's playing the Steinberger here, which makes me think this must be earlier, maybe around 1990. Greetings from noimcurious!

I was at the Diamond Club show, he definitely played Synthaxe for the entire show, I did not recall any Steinberger. I also can't remember the exact year, but definitely around 1990.

I don‘t know for sure and because music is, as we know, so subjective I may be wrong about this: but when I listen to the Bradford Executive, like a descriptive lark ascending melody I am always caused to think about the inner world of someone in the corporate world as seen from a distance on their regular train commute; their early hopes and dreams, the mid-life crisis and the terrible sterilised lows of a life of inscrutable numbers and flowcharts. The theory of Thoreau‘s line ‘The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation’ seems to be brought to as much life as a real person in his 4:15 Bradford Executive inspired melodies.

@@99beatmonster That's amazing. He's a really nice guy. I sent him an e mail last year and he replied. I asked him if he knew what Jeff Beck thought of Allan and vice versa., as he has played with both of them. He said Allan liked Jeff's work as he has his own unique style. He didn't know what JBs thoughts were on AH.
