Frank Zappa said Holdsworth was the most interesting guitarist around, and that's a former Zappa drummer playing with him. Eddie Van Halen was also a big Holdsworth fan, and helped get him a record contract. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and many others were also fans. Vai said that since Holdsworth had developed his own system of music theory, it might take years to figure out some of what he was doing. Holdsworth said he was too rock for the jazz purists, and too jazz for most rock fans, so he died practically broke in 2017.

Allan Holdsworth, 99.9% of Guitar players have no clue what he's doing, like he invented a new theory of harmony and melody and his legato, the length he holds each note even while playing so fast is unreal.
