If your Allen Bradley Micro820 or Micro850 keeps getting a random IP address assigned in the range of 169.254.X.X then it has DHCP enabled but there is no DHCP server available to assign the PLC an IP address. In these cases, the PLC assigns itself an IP address in the range of 169.254.X.X.
This can easily happen even if you have previously assigned an IP address to the PLC. If you create a new program in Rockwell Automation's Connected Components Workbench, the program will default to having DHCP enabled. If you don't set it to static and assign an IP address in the CCW program then when you download your program, it will revert back to having DHCP enabled.
In this lesson we go through how this happens and how to fix it.

Usually a nic set to dhcp that times out because it cant find a dhcp server will default to a 169.254.x.x, you covered this well.

its been a good problem for me , it really drills into your head the importance of configuring your drivers , you get to learn how to navigate around your network settings and change them, and you can go into rslinx and learn to set the static ip addresses to fix it/ learn about command ping...even serial connection and tools available to help use get through this issue promptly .i watch these videos so many times i think i hear a voice in my head when i start a new project lol.. ." okay first thing we have to set our address " .. some of the steps associated with fixing this problem in different ways teaches very important info for being able to connect to plcs in general

It is a good thing to practice that way you know what to do when you run into it out in the field.

I've had the same problems lots of times when using a micro820 for the first time. Fortunately I have always had a REMLCD connected to the 820. From there it is easy to find its current IP. But, can also find the IP from a laptop using the command prompt and the arp -a command. This will bring up its IP with Mac address. I always get caught out using the micro820 for the first time.

Yes, I should grab an LCD to play with.

@@TimWilborne That will be a useful video. Every time I install a micro820, I always use an LCD with it.

At 4:47, I get the message "Target Device Reported Error". Not sure what the next step should be?

Are you sure it doesn't already have an IP address?

@@TimWilborne It has an IP address that was assigned by DHCP, not a static IP.

By DHCP do you mean our device or another DHCP server?

@@TimWilborne Both. If I plug it into a computer network connection, I get one address. If I plug it into IP Explorer,I get a different address.

Might be easier to send me an email, it's usually a problem with your network settings of the IPE.

When trying to change a DHCP address in a Micro 820 with the IPE my device gets stuck on the Waiting for BOOTP or DHCP Request screen. What am I doing incorrectly?
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne Год назад
There is an issue with the Micro820, it does accept the "Enable DHCP" command. Rockwell Automation is aware of it.

Tim. Computer IP=192.168.1.105, Micro 850=192.168.1.102 (I already made communication between them), HMI t4t= 192.168.1.104 (I can not see the HMI in the connection browser), I tried using the same IP address PLC/HMI, but nothing yet. where am I failing?

If you can ping the HMI but not see it in the connection browser then check out this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--N1meHqahlg.html

@@TimWilborne In all seriousness, I run a high school lab with 40 laptops connecting to a trainer. The PLC is set to DHCP, so we have do discover the new IP every time a student plugs in or turns on. There must be a reasonable way to set the Micro820 to a static IP without a special tool. I only have to do this once, and if the method involves a couple more hoops without a special tool, so be it. What's the method? And if I am picking a static IP for it, can I pick any value? Or must the static IP's first two pairs of numbers need to match my local network? Thanks for the advice!

@@wayneclift8598 I'm not an expert, but I did arp -a in command prompt as suggested above while connected to a micro820. I then used that to configure IP address in CCW. I then set that as the static IP address on my laptop. The first time I did have to click Device - Connection Path - Browse in CCW to find the IP address that I set. Since then, it connects every time by just clicking connect.

@@wayneclift8598 I used arp -a in command prompt after connecting to the PLC. I then take what is there and set the IP address in the PLC. I also had to change my static IP address on my laptop. I had to browse for it the next time I connected to the PLC, but it has worked every time after that by just clicking connect.
