Hi bluegrass folks and Harley Allen/Allen Brothers fans. I was there in the studio of the Bob Braun show that day. In fact, I set up the appearance for them. I was playing bass with Katie Laur at the time and we regularly played the show, the last of the local daytime TV variety shows. That was around the time we recorded Clara's Boys, the last Allen Brothers record (Harley brought me in to play upright bass) . They were a really talented family, and Harley was just ridiculous. He wrote some of his best stuff before he ever headed to Nashville. Is there a better song about being a musician than "Wildwood Flower Blues"? It was an honor to know those folks and a joy to travel and play music with them. And when Red was in the mood to sing, there was no better traditional bluegrass singer on the planet. God bless the Allens.
Jan 23, 1956 - Singer/songwriter Harley Allen is born in Dayton, Ohio. He writes Alan Jackson's "Between The Devil And Me," Darryl Worley's "Awful, Beautiful Life" and Blake Shelton's "The Baby." He also sings harmonies on The Soggy Bottom Boys' "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow". You may remember him from The Allen Brothers in his younger years. Jan 23, 1956 - March 20, 2011. Rest in peace.
Great harmonies. On Uncle Pen, having the fiddle and mandolin players at a distance and out of eye contact (probably no monitors in TV studio) was messing with the guys timing. All of them are pros, though. On "Louise" slower tempo brings them all together. Yeah, man.
Nashville got ahold of Harley Allen and almost did him in like Tim Obrien in a different way,and also allison krause has totally been done in ,backed by Nashville crap and now she sounds like everyone else there crap.somedsy she'll come back to bluegrass and make good recordings and without auto tune, yes most have to use it now ,Allison and Vince could adjust your auto tune to work better if you know what I'm saying.
