I had to neg you on the silly mummers thing becasue they raise funds for charity and we Shriners are a tad silly too...funding a 3.2 billion dollar a year chain of 22 hospitals for children nationwide. Well, I am taking it on long time input that they are, and I dont have access to current books, so, they may have backed off. I am a Shriner-Ziyara Temple Utica NY dues not current, unfortunately due to job loss...but my heart is with them...it takes a lot to raise 3,.2 Billion per year to keep the hospitals open.,
This is the "anthem" of the Philadelphia Mummers, who are everyday people that get dressed up in fancy costumes and strut up (parade) Broad St. in Philadelphia on New Year's Day. This parading of sorts has been going on in Philadelphia since the mid-17th century but wasn't officially made into a parade until the late 1890s. Its good fun... Philadelphia Mummers in a nutshell.
@telewheels - Not only were blacks excluded from the Mummers Parade, so were women until the 1970s. To this day, even though both blacks and women are now allowed, many men in the Comic Division gaudily dress as women (for comic purposes only) and those men are referred to as "wenches".

The first official Mummers Parade was in 1901. Several times, they were moved to Market St., but local sentiment has always returned the parade to going north on Broad St. from south Philly. For non-Philadelphians, most of the north-south streets are numbered - Broad St. is equivalent to 14th St., while Market St. is east-west, and the two meet at City Hall. I actually prefer Philly parades to go south on Broad St from City Hall to the sports complex, as was done in 2008 for the Phillies. ;-)
I also did forget to mention as well that you are a very good player and this is one of the best versions I've seen/heard on youtube. While you are entitled to your opinion, telewheels, the tradition of the mummers is a great thing (plus it brings revenue to the city); and coming from a family of mummers who have been doing this for over 50 years, it'd be sorely missed if it really did die out. Plus, we're not all drunks. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I am only sorry my papa from Morrisville Pa (Univ of Penn -Wharton 40 ) could have heard you play...but then, maybe he is listening right now.
