I’ve loved this film since I was a kid. Defiantly an amazing cult film. Everyone does a great job in this, but Michael Richards is the definite standout. It’s a shame this film failing at the box office is a reason Weird Al didn’t do as many movies as he could have. This is still a hilarious film that I love watching it whenever I’m in the mood for something fun and entertaining.
For everybody complaining about the commentary during the movie you gotta remember that this is a reaction video. If you wanna watch the movie uninterrupted, buy the dvd you cheap bastards!
To answer the question of how many takes it took to get the grape catching scene, Weird Al said that it was just an odd talent David Bowe had. He apparently never missed one no matter how many times they did it.
Easily my fave comedy. Watch it at least once a year with my kids. Spatula City, Raoul, Conan the Librarian, “Supplies!”, “You get to drink from the firehose!” and so much more. It scratches the itch. :-)
Raoul was supposed to be in it way more but the actor was killed by a drunk driver during production. He was also the gang leader of 21st gang in Colors.
For all the people commenting about the talking too much, the excessive unrelated banter, etc I believe the main point being that there are so many pop culture references, gags, puns, etc from start to finish (I guess it is possible that alot of the references can be lost on the younger crowd). It was a noble effort, but the banter could have been more movie related or even if the movie was paused for the longer unrelated conversation. I understand the whole movie could not have been included due to time and copyright, but it seems like for the parts that were included that alot of bits were missed. Granted I (and probably most of the other hardcore fans) have seen it through multiple times, most to the extent that we could quote basically the whole movie essentially line for line. For the guy in the white shirt, Stanley actually said he was finished "polishing all the doorknobs". Regarding the box office bomb, it was most likely due to the fact that it was released the same time as Superman, Indiana Jones, and other blockbusters so it got more drowned out than necessarily bombing at the box office. I remember seeing it the first time when it was released in the movie theater. *end soap box rant*
big fan of Weird, have seen him live 5 times and have always enjoyed the energy he puts into each concert.... this movie mainly suffered by the lineup of movies around it, but its a classic for me and many of my friends
It's one of my favs too. I met him back in '87. He was my first concert as well when he was touring with The Monkees. I've also tried the Twinkie Wiener Sandwich. It's better when you cook the dog.
I enjoyed viewing this with you guys and seeing your reaction. This has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I also love all of the Ernest films lol
4:25 Ernest Scared Stupid is an amazing piece of cinema that tapdances the razor's edge between humor and horror through suspense. Also, if you go in not expected it to be a bit stupid, you missed the title.
On my first old TV there were two knobs one for regular channels and one for UHF type channels. I live in BC so there's not much choice for TV, but I'd imagine there'd be TONS of community TV programs on UHF in America because of the population difference.
Largely speaking, the kinds of people who really enjoy Weird Al's musical humor are the type of people who enjoy this brand of humor. It's not for everyone; as you said, humor is very subjective. A lot of word play, a lot of slapstick, a lot of topical parody humor of the 1980s (which is more for a certain generation who lived it, or people who are fans of the "retro" 1980s music and movies), a lot of non-sequiturs and just silliness. Many people go for all of those things! Some people may go for some, but not all of them; some people, it may not match their sensibilities at all. And that's okay. We who love it, love it hard!
SUPPLIES! A favorite comedy from my youth which I too have on dvd. Yes a very quotable film. I have referenced it a number of times over the years. A few years ago during a friend's Twitch stream I quoted some lines when he died in a game, and some became staples. Whenever you visit my stream and some of my friend's and input the !airhammer command you'll get Kuni shouting STUPAAAD, YOU SO STUPAAAD!! We also have !supplies for when you first pop in and want to say hi. To clarify what was said, Ian Pearson and Gavin Blair who worked on the animation for Money For Nothing were the ones who founded Mainframe Studios which produced ReBoot, Beast Wars, and much more. I'm not sure if they did the animation for Beverly Hillbillies, or someone copied their style. One thing that surprised me when looking the movie up once was learning that during filming Kevin McCarthy who played R.J. Fletcher was 74/75 years old. I honestly thought he looked much younger.
Kevin McCarthy was also the lead character in the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I hear that Gavin Blair and co. had nothing to do with Weird Al's video and were impressed when they saw the parody version with how well it recreated their style without being told any of the technical know-how to do it.
Hadn't seen this movie in a long time, but it's one of my favorites. Unfortunately I quit watching halfway through due to too much unrelated banter too loud over the movie.
@@moving_piktures Some is required of course but this was like nothing but talking. There's a reason most reaction channels have 1 or maybe 2 people at most.
I own the DVD, just seemed like too many chefs in the kitchen talking too loudly over the movie. I don't mean to sound like some kind of weirdo. My favorite reaction clips are one or two people watching the film, laughing (or crying), making limited comments and giving their analysis at the end. I didn't mean any disrespect.
@@fish292001 Sorry if I came across a little short. Haha, I'm glad you watched the video. Typically we have two people, but we had some bonus friends this time around. No disrespect taken and none meant either.
7:37 So he said it wrong. It took me years to figure out what he meant when he said that, which definitely means he said it wrong. Those guys were heckling him, calling him "Kramer". He doesn't like to be called Kramer. I really only very recently realized this. He missed four steps, and called the hecklers something they did not like. I am a Black guy and I love his comedy, and that instance really threw me for a long time. He jumped past the setup, which should have been: "You call me something I don't like, I'll call you something you don't like." He really could have gracefilly worked his way to it, and stopped at the famed phrase of the famed Knights from "Holy Grail". Nee! He really could have gracefully inched his way to it, and it probably would have been really funny. But he skipped four steps, was going too fast, failed to apply the brake, came in like a battering ram, and crashed into going viral online. He had probably had a really bad day and wasn't in a cool mental state, ready to calmy face the issue... and there he went. As near as I can tell, he is the first and only person "Cancel Culture" actually worked to cancel.
UHF is so crazy Fun! Long live Conan the librarian! It is a shame that we never got to see the animals getting revenge! The actor died before they could film the revenge scene! : (
Two requests: you should watch “Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory” (1971) and “Dr Seuss how the grinch stole Christmas” (2000) with Jim Carrey. I find those very unique and funny.
The people who created the animation for the Dire Straits video also did the Weird Al video. They would later go on to create ReBoot. edit: actually I may be wrong about the same people working on Beverly Hillbillies. But they definitely did make ReBoot.
Because so much of the humor relies heavily on pop culture references of the 1980s, I almost feel like before trying to introduce someone (especially anyone younger than GenX, and/or anyone that age or older who might not have been plugged into pop culture) to this film, one should quietly and nonchalantly make sure they have seen "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark," and "Conan the Barbarian," and "Rambo," and "The Beverly Hillbillies," and the "Money for Nothing" music video, etc, etc, etc. To fully "get" all of the many parodies and references, one has to have that base of knowledge, or else it can easily go right over your head. There's still plenty of slapstick humor, witty word play, weird non-sequiturs and plain old silliness. If those are not your cup of humorous tea, this probably isn't the film for you. But if those are the types of things that always make you laugh, then you'll enjoy this film, for sure!!
I wanted to watch this SO bad, but the two guys made it impossible. The wall to wall commentary kept the focus off the comedy and Kenny Powers is making it SO clear he's not into filming this. The phone, snacking.. he literally gets up and leaves. Why mention Michael Richards' racist rant the minute he appears? They're not going to find him funny after that.
That's bullshit! I've heard more racist stuff from other comedians. People pick and choose what to be offended by and then turn around and are ok with others doing it. It makes no sense!
Hmm, not against it per se, but that would be tough to edit around to make it more RU-vid friendly. But don't worry, we got a nice long list of movie and shows coming up.
