This day in 1943 marks the Allied invasion of Palermo in Sicily which played a pivotal role in the 'Italian Campaign' during World War Two. Here's Movietone's report on the British, American and Canadian advance into Italy.
The third report from Sicily shows the rapid advance of the Eighth Army after the first footholds in the South East corner of the island had been secured. General Montgomery, commander of the Eighth, drove along the coast road to sum up the situation. The people of Sicily welcomed our troops and dispensed what hospitality they could. My grandfather was from Palermo, he said the invasion was quite peaceful quite comfortable because the US sent mostly Sicilian-American soldiers to Sicily and it was quite the experience.

Anyone knows what happened to General Giuseppe Molinero afterwards? Was he shot? Liberated?

The Allies didn't invade Palermo. The US Army under Patton beat the "allies" in to rolling up Sicily and "conquering" Palermo. Montgomery couldn't get his ass in gear as usual.

Have you ever actually read a history book, you have to be American I assume - Patton, the egotistical butcher of his own men that he was, was fighting soft Italian troops who just didn’t want to be fighting - Monty however was fighting strong German forces who very much wanted to be fighting even as they went back
