Allotment Diary : Chitting Seed Potatoes : How to pre sprout your spuds before planting

Just a quick video about how I chit or sprout my seed potatoes before they are planted in the ground later in Spring.
The reason for doing it is not only to get some nice strong green shoots which will make the plant grow quicker but it also is a way of preserving the potato until planting.
If they weren't kept in a cool bright place then they would produce useless long spindly transparent shoots which are no good at all.

Ive ordered Any and Golden Wonder as well. All in all I am growing 3 varieties using your pot method which looked to be very reliable so hoping for good things. It will be interesting to see how my novice attempts compare to your experience. Hopefully I won't be too embarrassed or mess it up too badly.

Mine arrived today, so I'll give you one guess what I'll be doing this weekend. Got my garlic and onions also. I've grown Anya before, and they were good. It was several years ago. I'm still waiting for my Sarpo Mira's, hopefully it won't be long.

Nice! I see you have a round "hedgehog-cactus" as we call then here. Those spikes hurts when you get them under your finger nails. I had one of them for months, and couldn`t sort out what it was. Strange it didn`t get inflamed, -it just sat there.., hurting. After a while I cut the tissue open under the nail, and pulled out a spike over 1,5 centimeter.. Cheers, Halvor.

If your plan is to plant the seed potatoes in April, when do you begin the egg carton growth process? Approximately how long does this pre-planting growth process require?
@Allotment-diaryUk
@Allotment-diaryUk 11 месяцев назад
Do it as soon as you receive them as it is a way to stop them growing spindly long shoots if you were to keep them in a dark place I stead of chatting them.

Hi so how much growth will there be by April ? Seems like a long time between early Feb and then ? Ive only ever put mine in the ground once theyve sprouted half an inch or so but want to get a better start. So im curious how big they will be by April if done this way. Will they be plants with leaves etc by then ? And how long is too long between chittibg in an eggbox and putting them in soil. Do u need to moisten the egg boxes etc ? Thank u !

I have containers that are 2-foot wide. I use 2 potatoes per container, and harvest around 10... 2 big ones, 4 medium, and 4 small (I eat the little ones right away, and save the two big ones for planting next year).

Petes Back Garden Hi I think the end of February is well early enough, most send them out far to early, it only takes a week to chit them, Stick with the ones you have ordered you will still have loads of time before planting. Stephen

Mradamschannel the tradition in the UK is to start chitting them last weekend of Jan and plant them on good Friday but you can plant them anytime your ground has warmed up after winter, really
