Growing up my mom taught me how to properly budget and shop on sale. She did not take a video of me having to put things back while shopping for her social.
The one fear I have as an almost young adult, is not being able to afford something even if it's a small thing. You just get that feeling of sadness and embarrassment whenever you don't have enough to buy something you REALLY REALLY want.
I experienced something like that...but it wasn't because I didn't have Money. My card got canceled because I was in the process of changing my name and the old card was all I could use at the moment. Well, they never told me they were deactivating my card, so in a restaurant full of people...my card declined...luckily, my brother was there to save me, but man, so embarrassing.
I’m an adult and a mom and it’s still embarrassing sometimes, also makes my social anxiety much worse. Growing up literally surviving on canned foods made me really appreciate the money I do make, but I feel so bad if there’s something I can’t get for myself or my kids sometimes.
@@susie1283 nah people with social anxiety, etc, do get embarrassed and there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m a grown woman and a mom and sometimes I still get embarrassed or feel bad for not being able to afford something. Not $300 worth of makeup but definitely some things. Not everyone is the same, just so you know. 😊
Grace should’ve known too. This isn’t her first time shopping for herself. She’s more than old enough to subtract what she’s getting from her balance and has shown in previous videos she’s capable of doing so. This is on her

Its actually good and necessary to let your child make mistakes in a safe and controlled environment. Shit happens and children need to learn how to handle life. Its better to teach your kids about consequences and how to move past mistakes then to shelter them to the point where they conceptualize any minor inconvenience as a threat because you validated that anxiety with your bubble wrap parenting
Teach your kid to count everything together while shopping. She probably has a phone with a calculator with her, she can also use it and plan her budget wisely while shopping. It’s more fun to think about what else you can afford rather than being disappointed at the check-out.

@@Br-andy Andy, I don't know if you know this, but a lot of people find not being able to afford items and having to say "oh, take that off, and that off," as embarassing, especially in public as people are watching them. Especially if the person is self conscious of what others are thinking. I get so stressed out that I don't have enough money when I get to the front even when I know logically I have enough. It's just a part of social anxiety. Though that may just be me. That's probably why soemone said it was embarrassing because personally they found it embarrassing

@@Megz1794 12 is still very young her mother could have reminded her to use a calculator or the mother could have added behind her and stopped when she finished to say she over spent before the till rather than wait until the till to inform her. 12 is very young to make the decision at the till and I believe Grace handled it very well
It happens tho, that's why you always try to average out the total and if anything, have more money i your account than what you think the balance total will be. It's simple learning from mistakes, she just needs to budget better and she won't have to go thru this again

Sometimes you go over budget and have to put things back🤷🏽♀️ even happened at the dentist lol went in just for a checkup and clean and ended up leaving with the checkup,4 X-rays & my teeth cleaned ended up being around $300(+ the couple things I need done that will be another $500) I only had $200 and I was supposed to have money left over bc I planned to only spend like $150 for the check up & my teeth cleaned…Luckily where I live (small country town) they only made me pay for the check up & 2 X-rays so I only spent $156…..sometimes you just go over budget🤷🏽♀️😂

my parents give it a limit to spend on Christmas ($300-400) and I remember I was saving before then and I had about $800 😭 and i bought $987worth of items and my dad and mom saved me because I was doing really good in school and they knew i really wanted it so they did , I was so happy .
How do yall kids get that much. I never had an allowance when i was a kid. Even if i did chores. (Not that my parents are bad, atleast they taught me how to be responsible about money and finances at a young age. ) Maybe its a white people thing about getting big amounts of allowances. But my biggest allowance ever in an Asian household is to be able to live under a roof. And when i bought sum, i used the money i got from chinese new year or my birthday money. Even if ion get allowances as a kid, atleast keep track on things i bought, not spending much on makeup and almost $1000 wprth of items. + Doing really good in school is not much of an excuse for going over budget, its just common sense to do well in school. No hate btw just my opinion and point of view of growing up as an asian 💀

I wish this was taught with every kid, I see grown ass women come in (I’m talking 30+) to my work and have a bunch of shit in their cart when they come up to our registers and when we tell them the total, they act all shocked and tell us to take off a bunch of shit and sometimes even get pissed like it’s our fault.

she looks quite upset. as a young teen myself I would burst out in tears at the checkout if I didn’t have enough money to cover anything and had to embarrassingly put back what I couldn’t pay for. you should have reminded her to tally up what everything she was putting in the cart would cost, especially if you weren’t going to chime in and help out a bit. I’m sure she does TONS around the house and helps with pets, siblings, etc that you could’ve covered her.. I also hope she didn’t get that tiny bag worth of stuff for $300. I know ulta is expensive but for a kid her age she probably doesn’t need that much skin care/makeup. I rarely shop at Ulta because I think it’s over priced. You can get a lot of those brands at Walmart or target. But I do like that you teach your kids how to be responsible with money!
From my personal experience. Ulta and target have the same prices (for the same brands/items.) Walmart is sometimes a little cheaper but their make up selection is a lot smaller. At the end of the day it just depends on the brand you get, most of my purchases at ulta are ~$10 or under since I buy from NYX, elf, ulta brand etc
My parents did the same, but the first maybe 2 times I bought myself something and had the EXACT amount I needed (because I was learning to save up!) but the sales tax caught me by surprise, they forked over a dollar or two if I needed and then reminded me to save an extra few dollars for tax. I was very appreciative and remembered after that :)
This is intended to be constructive rather than critical---- While having to decide on the returns is a lesson, of sorts---- It would have been better to have taught her to keep a tally as she made her choices, and to have a more realistic expectation from the outset (this is also a good opportunity for a lesson in practical mathematics)

I would teach my kids the value of a dollar too but you don't let them go nuts you have to keep track of it somehow like if the child is not doing it you have to step in and guide them and be like look at how much you're spending look at how much that face scrubber costs... On a side note I would feel better taking my kids to Walmart.

I would have loved this system because my mom lets me buy whatever whenever no matter how much it is but i always feel incredibly guilty for spending too much if i had a set limit i would actually know if im spending too much and i can always pick and choose what i need, what i want and what is more important for me.
Of course they can consent. If she didn’t want to be in the video we wouldn’t have posted it or even filmed it. That is something we 100% respect their wishes on every single time.

She’s still young and even if you don’t put restrictions, maybe just advising her on the amounts as they add up? (You may have been doing this and I know teens kinda do their own thing sometimes regardless) I tell my daughter to use the calculator on her phone so she can keep track especially in stores with higher price points like Ulta and Sephora. I will also advise that we can check Marshall’s, TJMax, or Nordstrom rack first because you can find the same brands at cheaper prices before heading into the Ulta or Sephora and paying shelf price. I’m all for kids learning a lesson but I wouldn’t film it for the world to see. That’s just me tho.

My first reaction was to disagree with you but after reflecting, i can kind of see your point. But while this was probably an inconvenience to the cashier, mom will not always be there to remind her that she needs to stay within her budget so it is a teachable moments. Not all learning is from preventative information, sometimes you need a tangible and relatable experience for yourself.

I agree. It's a horrible way. I know kids who felt unloved because that's how their parents would teach them not to buy too much. I believe it's awful to do something like that - tell her she can buy whatever, but make her leave half the things she wanted at the shop. They're kids - they should have a childhood, not learn how not to spend money. That can be easily learnt by a discussion, not by humiliating them in public before everyone else
at that age $300 seems like you can buy anything like i used to think i can buy half the store. you gotta blame tax and inflation. also expensive skincare/face care products aren’t always the best. this is a teaching moment.
First mistake was going to ulta especially when she's so young still. Second mistake was not keeping track of what she was grabbing price wise. You live and learn and it'll help her for future spending.

That's brilliant. I love that you didn't stop her or remind her to keep track because that's reality. There have been times when I forgot to keep track and got shocked and had to put stuff back.
Wtf-? She’s a kid, she’s learning. You can’t just expect her to know when to tally things and keep track when they’re never taught. Instead, in situations like these, remind the kid lots so they get in the habit of it and know for the future. Then when she’s an adult she’ll know how to do that and she’ll thank you for a valuable skill in life
As someone who worked in cosmetics/fragrance a LOT of women over spend! they usually come back with buyers remorse and return a lot. So now is definitely a good time to teach this lesson!!
You don't. What happens when you don't buy something is they'll put it in a bin and it will be returned to the shelves by the workers. That way they know where everything is and where it goes.

I understand the idea but this is just teaching her that she can’t go to her parents when she’s in a tough spot. She won’t come to you in a time when she really needs it because of instances like this.
I feel so bad for her! although it is a good lesson to learn how to budget, I feel like the mom knew that the daughter was well over her budget but didn’t say anything and set her up for embarrassment. She could have still learned the lesson of not getting too carried away by just telling her that it’s way too much and to be careful. I feel like the humiliation was unnecessary, and the mom was literally posting about it on the internet too! Isn’t that enough of a lesson already if she already faced the public humiliation. Posting your child’s down falls that you caused for approval of the internet saying that you such a good parent for doing this is seriously hurting your child. I’m not trying to be rude, I just know that I would be so embarrassed if this happened to me. Edit: I forgot to add that when they left the store the mom continued to talk about it, and said that the daughter looked really happy about what she got when she was literally about to burst into tears.
