ALLUVIAL GOLD PROSPECTING - HOW TO CAPTURE SUPERFINE GOLD SUSPENDED IN SOLUTION
In this video I demonstrate a simple, but effective method to capture really fine gold that is literally suspended in water. Commonly called "Mustard Gold" or "Gold Dust", it is so fine that most conventional tools will struggle to capture it. Using a piece of metal tubing and some calico bags, a simple filter can be made to strain the water that is holding the gold. Although the amount caught is negligible in most cases, where large volumes of water are involved, this technique can be useful.

Funny, I asked Chris Ralph - he does a number of videos worth watching on hear about gold & prospecting and was Associate Editor of the ICMJ's Prospecting and Mining Journal which I have and still do subscribe to for over 20 years and through his writing and articles learned he has a ton of indespensible Knowledge on most every aspect of Gold you would desire to know and he freely shares it, but what every one asks for would take a work force of thousands, But I left him a comment "If I had a magic pass that I could go into Yellowstone for a day with a pan & metal detector would I find anything? I had no intention of implying I would, or having the means to do so, I was curious, about the things I'd read and wanted a comparison to solidify my understanding (innocent enough) I thought; with-in a week Chris had a video out on Yellowstone and answered 95% of my questions while stressing -"You can't do that!" Very well done video and I hate to think I was the cause of drop everything & get this video out, but with the quality of the video I'm thinking it was a coincidence and not my doing, but on the other hand - there is a lot of crazy ass people in the world and what you say can't be taken as casual talk like it used to be- Sorry Chris, but you should definitely watch his Yellowstone video since you are right there and I'll bet you watch a whole lot more of his video's. Welcome to America and happy trails!

I've had great luck with synthetic cloth filters. Black curtain materials from craft stores are awesome. Most are sorted by mesh/thickness so it really opens up options for different dust sizes. Cheers!

I've also found stainless steel screens for filtering I think they are made for liquids because they have incremental sizes own to 500 mesh! that are more then 1/2 inch all the way down to 500 mesh! they might be more durable, but yours might be more flexible and able to make the classifier easier to make. I make mine out of various plastic potted plant containers by cutting the bottoms off and melting the screen back in its place, they are rigid, but take up space to store, or take anywhere. I have a craft store I've been meaning to return to and like checking out new ideas, I already have 2 ideas with your cloth mesh and will have to test for durability-thanks and happy trails!

Thanks for teaching me not to worry about such a tiny amount of gold, unless you are running continuously so it can accumulate into a reasonable amount. At my current hobbyist rate of processing it is not going to make any difference until a few years of filter collection.

I helped teach the visitors at the Las Vegas GPPA show two years ago, they use about 20 ft of panning tubs. The gold that they put in was from the beaches in Alaska. Super fine! 3 hrs in my arms were coated with glitter and then 1/2 dollar size floaters started showing up in the tubs. It was amazing to see! Somebody found some jet dry and back to busyness. I have know idea how someone caught that dust in the 1st place. But! I'm working on it! Lol Awesome video, till you see it you won't believe it!

I saw a video on this topic before.....the guy cut a hole on the bottom of a 5 gal bucket and put a 2 inch shipping tube cover in the hole. He then stirred up his dirt and poured off the water with the fine silt only. Then he added a chemical from a waste treatment facility to drop the heavies. From that point he stirred the water and the gold settled in the tube cover. It was amazing what he caught. I have a 250x scope that hooks up to my tv and the amt of microscopic gold blows my mind (on the tv they're 2 inch nuggets and I can't see them in a 10x loop). I'm going to try your chemical free method as I've saved most of the silt from the pour offs just for this reason.

Thats a great demonstration of how fine gold gets caught up in sediment which is what you were filtering. Try explaining this to people who think putting a pan at the end of a sluice shows losses. You can also double pan your sedement into another pan and top it up with fresh water and use the tap method to get a show. Im sure youve opened some people's eyes here as to just how fine gold is

Hi John, well I have set up an overflow from the spiral wheel self contained container going into another bucket. I needed to do this because I am running crushed red clay and I was only able to run the wheel for about 15 minutes before the sludge would clog up the stocking type filter. I have used another material that is not as fine as the stocking stretched over the top of the bucket where the overflow goes and the pump is in the bottom of that bucket. I am now able to run the wheel for about 5 buckets of crushed clay @ 25 mesh before I need to do a full clean up. (about 4 hours running)Anyway, long story short I have rinsed out the filter and let it sit overnight. I am amazed on just how much fine gold was suspended in the water. So yes it all worked but the wheel is dialled in very well and picking very very small flower gold in the cup. I will put up a couple of crude vids on my channel later

I get lots of that showing in the very bottom of bucket or tubs. It’s always the last thing that remains. I tell people I’m sure it’s gold they tell me it’s clay. Clay though would pour off early right? My district is well known for micro gold so fine you can’t see it in some veins. I really like this solution you’ve come up with. 1/4 tsp per bucket would add up quickly.

Ya I know I’ve got some material right now that I’m working that has super fines in it. I can see it just rolling with the black sand. I panned one little scoop and ran and got my phone and ordered another bag. Found more gold in one scoop than most other brands. It was a 4 lbs bag and was priced the same as some one pounders. Another way is to try something like this (thanks to Goldrushgang for leading me on to it); Get a 9 litre plastic bucket and drill a 20cent size hole in the middle. Stick a square of black duct over that hole from underneath and half fill the bucket with your water containing suspended fine gold. Swirl it up really well and then let the water settle. Tip the water out into another bucket and peel off the duct tape. All your fine gold will be driven down and inwards to the duct tape, even floating gold will be driven under, where it will stick to the glue on the tape covering the hole. This is good for fine gold final recovery or for loaming for fine gold - no good for bigger gold. Wipe the gold off the duct tape with a tissue soaked in kero or petrol, whatever, as long as it dissolves the glue. Then burn the dry tissue to recover your gold. Try it with fine copper filings and you'll see what I mean. I'd include some pictures but can't seem to get them into this comment. Cheers.

I saw a guys video on something like this, but he drilled a hole in the center of the bucket the same size as a small cup, (maybe a jar lid?) and would just put his heavies in and, get it spinning fast, let it sit and put a cover on the cup, then carefully remove the cup, large and small gold and some black sand. He was sold on it.

I have recently found alluvial gold in Canada . And did this same process to extract my gold this is the first video that do it the same way I boiled the water to extra the dust in a pot then scrap the dust out and refilter I must have had to boil down 200 liter of water to extra 2 troy ounces . I am still trying to find a refiner or grader I messaged a SGS but no reply . The gold came from paydirt for a house foundation I have no mining lease for reclamation.. I am not sure if that is a issue as I just found the alluvial gold and like you see in your video all the gold particles show in water very noticeable I washed it off with a garden hose and nothing but gold particles everywhere .. I was like it's running off the table I got to put this all in water from then catch it and boil out the different elements very one thinks I am crazy because I haven't got tested yet and we don't know if it's gold .. I have also heard that 40 percent of the gold is so fine it washes out of your gold pan or sluice box. What I really hate is going into a place two days after someone dredges the area with a big dredge. You can't find anything. They either got the gold and or the super fine gold washed down the river. Another problem I found is in order to do anything with this you have to be able to stay somewhere like out in the middle of nowhere for long periods of time. If you are working a 9 to 5 job that makes it impossible unless you do it Saturday or Sunday. This is why it takes so long to get anything. You could have someone grubstake you. Or bring you food and supplies. I did that. The guy who was grubstaking me never showed up to bring me food and I almost wound up starving to death. He forgot about me. We were supposed to split the profit 50 50. I wound up eating mushrooms in order to survive. These things really stoned me out. I finally said f*ck this shit. When I got back to civilization I found this guy in his apartment as drunk as a skunk. WhenI reminded him that he was supposed to bring me supplies he said oh I forgot. Well that was the end of that. What little gold I did get when I sold it, it wasn't even enough to pay for the gas up to the mountains. I was so disgusted I put everything on the back burner until I could find someone I could trust.

And I would like to know why you would ask ask such a question, when clearly this video is simply demonstrating a method of recovering fine gold that is in water, NOT about searching for gold dust. Also, if you know so well that there are tons of Gold in this country...then get your arse over here, and make a video and show us all your expertise. Regards Aussie

Screen the dirty water only and pan down carefully; can you do a video on getting that gold out of the pan and into a vial or suitable storage until I have an ounce? Or, say, half an or even 1/4 ounce? My problem has always been in transferring a pan into ever smaller containers until I can collect enough that doesn't take up a huge amount of room in the time it takes to fill a suitable amount-snuffer bottles I always feel I'm floating a lot out, and with every transfer, maybe from the pan into a beaker and the water evaporates, or clarifies enough if needed to pour enough water off to add the next batch? How much muddy water would I need to process for a 1 gram batch, or even smaller? Save it all, and when it's worth it, do it all! Seriously. I am lazy, and it haunts me to know, or think, I'm losing gold in any step of the process, and then I avoid that step and never get it done; I'm beginning to think I am a hoarder!

There are 40,000 gold dust particles in an ounce. It's tough to justify all the materials and time it takes trying to capture enough to make it profitable. Where I am in Nevada (US), there is a considerable amount of clay (very fine rock dust) that gold dust has an affinity for, even with detergent. It's not just surface tension or electrostatic pull that attracts the two to each other. So, I need a chemist or electrician who thinks outside the box to come up with an alternative to mercury or cyanide. It needs to be cheap, readily available, quick, safe to handle, environmentally friendly and not require considerable heat or pressure. A warm and mildly acidic solution of thiourea and fat is my latest unsuccessful attempt but may be a step in the right direction. We'll see.

If you’re not on a time frame can you just let the sun evaporate it ???
@AussieBlokeProspector

I reckon if you could spread out some plastic sheets with raised sides, evaporation would be an excellent method. Just gotta make sure the wind can't get at it. Regards Aussie

Some people are that keen.... having said that, the amount was NOT the focus here. The METHOD employed to catch such fine gold was the point here. Regards Aussie

He only left me 2 weeks worth of food and in two weeks I only obtained something like 10 USD in gold. I'm sure It was more but the buyer only gave me ten for it. I felt like I got ripped but there is always another day. That was 20 years ago. It's not easy.

I have done this before. It's a very slow and tedious process. Takes forever just to get anything. I think it took a month just to get a gram. It's good info though. I eventually had to use mercury to pick it up. If you do it this way you really need to be patient

I like the idea, but putting the sludge that was filtered back into water seems counterproductive. I wonder if a solution that has a lower density than water would work better for final panning/seperation. Perhaps an alcohol solution with low surface tension would sink more of the extra fines.

I agree with you. This was done purely to show the results. Amounts that small and fine, once caught, are better treated with mercury. Regards Aussie

I have been out there, done just about everything to trap gold. Developed unique technologies to trap that fine gold. I came up with interesting ideas. But if you want to make a living at it you need to developers a fast way to trap it. Just collect it and melt it down.

avoid the temptation to use your fingers in the pan. the oils on your skin float the gold. a tiny amount of oil will float alot of gold away. otherwise great tips

The buyers excuse for giving me ten dollars for I think it was around a gram of gold was that it wasn't marked for a gold value like 14 K etc. He had no way to test it so he was taking a chance on buying it. If you want to get it marked for Karet value you have to spend 50 dollars to have it assayed probably losing most of your profit. He told me nobody else is going to even look at it. Ten dollars take it or leave it. So I had to take the crummy deal.

USE jet dry/ dishwashing liquid breaks surface tension the gold will not float anymore
@AussieBlokeProspector
@AussieBlokeProspector 5 лет назад
Incorrect... firstly, although breaking the surface tension with detergent will cause the majority of gold to sink, not ALL of it will and that's because we are not talking about floating gold here, we are talking about Suspended gold.
