Firstly, Thankyou from the bottom of my heart to Dr. Shekhar Pathak, and Karan Joshi, just see the video to see why. Also, thanks to Vinayak Pant for helping with camera work.
This video was made in collaboration with Almora Literature Festival, organized from 30th June to 2nd July 2023.
Almora is a town in central Kumaon region of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, lovingly known as the cultural capital. This almost 500 years old town has seen some of the greatest minds in the field of art and literature, and has contributed vastly to the literature of Hindi, Kumauni and Sanskrit as well.
Names like Sumitranandan Pant, Shivani, Shailesh Matiyani, and Girish Tiwari 'Girda' are just some of the greatest poets, writers and artists of the region.
This video tells the story of the same with a lot of help from Dr. Shekhar Pathak, from the beginning to the end, a brief history. Enjoy!

Good to see our inimitable Shekhar Da featuring on my bhulla Harshit's video. As a Garhwali, I've always been in awe of how articulate and aware folks from Almora have traditionally been. Perhaps, it would be apt to say that Almora is the intellectual center of the whole of Uttarakhand. This hold especially true in the aftermath of the submerging of Tehri. The birthplace of stalwarts like Badri Dutt Pandey, Govind Ballabh Pant, Girish Tiwari, Puran Chand Joshi, Shamsher Singh Bisht, Pushpesh Pant to name a few. To hear an Almora based intellectual offer deep insights on culture, religion, language in chaste Hindi while retaining the sweetness of the Kumaoni language in his/her accent is one of the most enjoyable things in the world. @@randombeing1Dehradun and Haldwani showed their true colors in the immediate aftermath of Ankita Bhandari's muder by refusing to participate in the bandh that had been convened to protest the same. Rural Garhwalis, Kumaonis and Jaunsaris stood shoulder to shoulder against the heinous crime but Dehradun and Haldwani demonstrated their unabashed indifference with complete shamelessness. Gotta admit, pathetic cities they are.

I think you are the right person who knows about the actual source of Mahakali river which is limpiyadhura, if you know this case, next video on it.

Source of a river is a tricky thing. I am guessing you are from Nepal, and Nepal's political gains lie in the fact that Limpiyadhura is the origin. While there is a possibility of it being historically and locally true, there are two things to consider: 1: There was a Kingdom and civilization here before Nepal or India or even British India existed. Lipulekh Pass is known to be in Kumaun before Gorkhas conquered it and ruled the land for a mere 25 years, and then after defeating them, British ruled for 130 more years. Neighboring kingdoms that are today in Nepal like Jumla, Bajang and Doti were simply not powerful enough because they were not big enough. British defeated Gorkhas in 1816, and border was decided as Mahakali, but both Gorkhas and British were foreign invaders in this land. Even if Limpiyadhura is to be considered the source, the treaty of Sugauli was signed with the British, not with the people who lived here, and live here now, who controlled the Lipulekh pass for generations and traded with Tibet. The land belonged to Nepal for a mere 25 years, during which, I might add, they ruled so brutally that even British were considered saviors. 2: The longest headstream doesn't always make the originating headstream, and it is particularly true in Uttarakhand. Examples are: Tons is not the originating headstream of Yamuna, despite being much longer and bigger. Jadh Ganga is not the originating headstream of Bhagirathi. Saraswati is not the originating headstream of Alaknanda, so is not Dhauliganga by the way. Lassar yankti is longer than Darma Yankti at confluence but it isn't the origin stream, and Darma Yankti itself is longer than Kali at Tawaghat, but it is not considered the mainstream of Kali. Today, the pass of Lipulekh is vastly more important to India than to Nepal, so India will never give it up. Everyone looks out for their own gains.
