"Almost Out of Control" - Never a Dull Moment Sailing the 505 at the West River Spring Regatta

The West River Sailing Club's Spring Regatta is the highlight of the East Coast 505 spring schedule. This year the event was preceded by a clinic for the 505 fleet. Seven boats took part in that clinic and there were some lessons learned by many. We made a few adjustments and they paid off bigtime when the larger 14 boat fleet sailed for the unofficial 505 Region 2 Championship as part of the spring regatta.
Saturday dawned with fog and a postponement ashore, before lifting and giving the fleet 4 races in light conditions. We had figured out how to hold lanes in these conditions after some trim pointers at the clinic and took advantage of our downwind speed to place in the middle of the fleet, a place we were pretty happy with!
Sunday started with much stronger breeze and gradually died over the course of the day. The first 2 races were pretty windy and the third was much lighter. We had the tuning all wrong in the first race, figured it out for the second, and then were completely wrong again for the third as the wind backed off. It was still a lot of fun and we had our moments, both right side up and upside down.
These highlights are from races 1, 2, 5, and 6.

Ah. First time on a trapeze. I remember that. It doesn't take long before you become habituated, as long as the skipper doesn't make the boat do crazy things. One remedy for that is to sail a single-hander on the trapeze. The crazy things the boat does are then your fault. Withe a well designed trapeze harness, being out on the wire is very comfortable.

Great video guys! I've never seen a spinnaker pole set up like that! No, actually I had seen that in other videos but I didn't know what I was looking at until I saw you gybe it. Had to go back a couple of times and watch again to figure it out. Is it a bungee that pulls the pole back along the boom (that is, when you are not using it?)

There's 2 poles, one on each side that are connected permanantly to the spinnaker guys. The single line launcher pulls everything into place, no fumbling around with jaws or twings. When the line is released the bungee pulls it back along the boom. It's a bit complicated to rig up, but very simple to use. Twists can be a pain, but they can be prevented/fixed if you're careful rigging the kite. Since I started using it whenever I have to do a gybe with any other symmetrical spinnaker setup it feels so slow.
