The reason for the 27,2 scale length on the 8th string is probably because they use a 25,5 -27 fan on their multiscale 7 strings, so instead of having a different fan for the 8 strings, they just add an extra string and we get the 27,2.
I'm sorely tempted. Would you recommend it? I've been listening to a lot of Meshuggah lately, I'm pretty stoked on the idea of learning some of their riffs.
@@justsomerandomguyman I think what he means is its a response to Abasi because of the 25.5-27 scale length with fishmans. Yes, so many companies have multiscale 8's but all of their scale lengths are 26.5-28.5 give or take.
@@BaenaCarcosa my favorite green guitar is the Max Cavalera (Ex-Sepultura, Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy) signature from ESP LTD, specifically the viper models (MC-200, MC-500, & MC-600). Preferably I like just the green more than the brazilian flag one.
That's a Sick Ibanez model, as you mentioned i also think the color choices are nice.. I found your Bury the Hatchet demo and the riffing to be quite Sick.. You incorporated that breakdown nicely.. I also thought your decision to split it up into 2 sections and ending it with slowing the tempo i liked also.💀🤘
It would be cool if you have a quick 10-15 second rundown of your signal chain before the demo mix. It’d be helpful to know if this is using mostly plugins or with a mic’d amp. My assumption is DI and using a Neural DSP plug-in because that’s the gold standard nowadays but I never know and again, is just an assumption.
Fact to note that I think was slightly overlooked and is pretty nice. The bridge is not just a standard hipshot-type bridge, its a mono rail.. In my opinion, the RGD/MS truly shine the most when it comes to that affordable ease of access to intonation on a multi-scale/fixed bridge. It also allows for a very sleek and comfortable palm muting position without feeling anything dig into your palm (small screws etc.) I think the 7 version is a good competitor for the pricier and hyped MHS7, was thinking of getting one and then fixated on the RGD7ALMS.
Got mine back after it being in for repair for 6 weeks and i love it. The neck profile is beautiful to play, and those pups sing real nice. And its insane how light it is conpared to my other 8s. My only minor gripe is the pickup selector and voicing switch not being gold to match the rest of the hardware
To be honest, if I were to get an 8 string, this would be it for the price and what it comes with but there’s something about 9 strings that I love, even if I’m playing a traditional 8 string tuning. I actually put my first Kiesel 9 string build this year. And if I’m shredding, the good ol ibanez Xiphos 6 string has kiesel mounted pick ups (empyrean neck, thorium bridge). Awesome 8 from ibanez though.
Definitely a fan of sweetwater as being from the UK it works out surprisingly cheaper ordering from them than from a UK guitar store, that's including shipping. THough I have only ever ordered pickups from sweetwater so far. Though hopefully another guitar this year, I'm thinking either the ESP LTD SN-1007HT BARITONE or TE-1000 both are my favourite finish of black blast which is one of the reasons why I want them.
I read that it was made in Indonesia. Should I let that bother me? One of my $1000 RGDs had some quality control issues but maybe that's just part of it.
I just bought one of these guitars I’ve had a look all around it and played it lots I’ve had no issues with mine I just don’t know if anyone else has had QC issues
Almost perfect. It has golden hardware (not to my liking at all), and 9-string pickup format can be a bit of an issue if, for some reason, you'd have to change them. I guess the 8-string soapbar format with rail magnets should do the job. I'd also bump up the longer scale to 28". That said, one of my 8 is a 25.5"/27" multiscale and is awesome that way.
I used Dimarzio Diactivator 8 string pickup in the bridge of my RGMS8 and it works well. I used a sheet of fibreglass to make a custom base shaped like the stock pickup and screwed the Dimarzio bobbins to the new base. Doesn't line up perfectly with the strings, but sound 500% better than the stock pickups. Ive got 2 Ibanez 8 strings, both came with floppy thin gauge strings. Couldn't even avoid fret buzz at stock tuning if you used a feather as a pick.
I’m so glad you mentioned the awkward bit of the fretboard behind the nut. I know it’s such a minor detail but it just bugs me so much and is genuinely the only thing keeping me from getting an Ibanez multiscale, because I’m otherwise a total Ibanez fanboy lol
Great review I hate that excess fret board above the nut, other guitar companies remove it and it looks so much better, also every photo i see of this model the fingerboard looks brown the its rosewood which is a bit odd when your looks like ebony.
I have the Ibanez RGD71ALMS. Basically exactly the same just 7 Strings. I got an .80 on my B string. 27“-25.5“ Tuning it to Drop E is a bit flubville for me personally. 😅
I’ve got a 26.5 6 string and I struggle to intonate an .80 at F# even (I’ve removed the spring on the saddle and the string is basically going nearly 80 degrees into the hole in the body. I can’t imagine going E.
Glad you pointed out the nut, Idk why Ibanez leaves all their fan fretted 8s like this. Its a really tacky & distracting design from an otherwise beautiful guitar. I have 3 standard scale Ibanez 8s & I would probably get a MS8 if they fixed the nut
The fretboard is the same fretboard they use on non multiscale 27” 8strings. Ibanez mass produced the necks separately and don’t necessarily build neck to suit. All they do is pop in the fanned frets and paint the headstock otherwise this same neck is probably in almost all of their RGD8’s. It is a cost saving measure by mass producing the necks and then just painting & finish and fretting to suit the model in particular.
The neck isn’t the same as the RGMS8 (only other production multiscale 8 string Ibanez, and it’s not even an RGD) so this is a “unique” neck for Ibanez.
Great video Andrew! I’m interested in this guitar but sounds like from others the tuner on the 8th string needs a larger hole for low 80 string? I know that’s your preferred string gauge. Did you need to enlarge the opening on the tuner? Thanks!
I'm thinking of buying last years version of this, the 7-string RGD71ALMS (or something). I'm still a bit unsure if I should go for an 8-string or simply a 28".30" baritone 6-string. Can't decide 😕
@@mathprodigy I was speaking with a guy selling one for $750, but someone else got to it before me. I was really stoked on it :( I much prefer the looks of it over the one in this video. I'm also a bit unsure about 8-strings. I'm more into death metal than deathcore and "djenty" stuff. Will see what pops up on the used market here in Sweden.
@@nj1255 Sweden! Nice man! You ever seen Meshuggah there? And I feel you man, you won't enjoy an 8 unless you really have the desire to play that style. There's very few 8 string chords lol so it's either djent, galaxy chugs, or perhaps you're an Abasi finger picker, but def sounds like the 7 fits you better. I have a couple 8 strings, an Agile and a Kiesel, and I also have an Agile 9, and yea I don't play any of them similar to the way i play a 7.
Such a gorgeous guitar but I find it ridiculous that they gave it a silver toggle switch with gold hardware and a gold knob... I'll definitely change that on mine if I get one
There is something very muddy and static sounding about this tone that I’m not personally vibing with. I can see someone else seeing it as “dirty and disgusting” in a good way, but I like to have definition and beefiness without losing articulation.
Try to find a used Ibanez rg8L. I got mine for a similar price to that harley benton and would recomend it as your best bet for a left handed 8 string in that price area.
That train has long since left the station. Buy a Kiesel! They’ve been in the game of multi-scale guitars much longer than Ibanez. Not to mention that you have customisation options for pretty close to the same price, not to mention that Kiesel have higher build quality standards.
So I understand why like an 8 string can have 9 string pickups from a practical stand point, but honestly from an aesthetic perspective I really dislike it. It just seems so out of place. Anyone else bothered by this? Probably just me lol
This guitar is a total failure. Why are you asking? The multiscale solution at the 12th fret is the worst possible option, the better option is the 7th fret or how esp did it at the 5th fret. The multiscale center at the 5th fret is the most ergonomic option in my opinion. In addition, the pickup from the 9 string guitar is too big and disturbs the playing terribly. Here again see the model from Esp ltd M-1008 MS, couldn't it fit so nicely? You can see that the film is sponsored. Almost perfect you say? Seriously? Such a talented guitarist would play such a poorly designed guitar? Better try esp model and maybe do a video about it.
That scale length is pathetically short for such a metal guitar. I'm so fucking sick of the big brands only doing these boring 26'5 7 strings and 27' 8 strings.
I got a multiscale bass from ibanez that also has that weird extra bit of fretboard behind the nut and hate it. It isn't nearly as noticeable on the bass though since the colors don't contrast as much.
How does the little bit after the nut bother anyone. What else are they supposed to do lol. Imagine how out of tune it would be bcse the headstock would be at an angle.
Lol I'm sure that no one wants to cut out the piece, but have it painted in the same color as the headstock to make it "disappear" and not be as obvious. Lmao :D But I don't have a problem with it either.
