Hi there! Your video just popped to my home page and decided to watch it. I’ve been recently allured to alocasias lately and I must say that I enjoyed watching your video. It was informative and quite impressive to know some fun facts about them. I can say that it shows how much you love your plants and inspired in growing them in your home. I am somewhat convinced to try growing alocasias in my home as well. Wishing you the best of luck and more power to create a lot of videos like this. ❤

I’m really looking forward to the care video. Aocasia are also my favorite genus, but the care is so tricky especially when it comes to watering. The roots are so delicate and rot ao easily at the tinest mistake. I agree that each will need a specific care video.

I've found the macrorhizza vareigata will put out an all while leaf but then green / variegated ones after it, so think yours will be fine. I think its a genetic variegation not chimeric as it comes from corms not cuttings, so it can do that :)
@PlantsofJoy
@PlantsofJoy 2 года назад
That's interesting. Mine has put out an all green, then a variegated and then another all white one since I filmed this. Hopefully it sorts itself out soon though because it's a stress fest. If the variegation come from the corm, does that mean that it's babies will be variegated? That would be super cool.

Yes Zebrina is pretty easy to come by in the US. Just recently started my addiction and have about 10 in addition to my 30 orchids, although I am really thrilled with the Alocasias!

Thank you. I think when they are larger they are a bit easier but can be tricky when younger. It's sometimes a case of white knuckling it through until it somehow matures. I just found spidermites on it 🤦🏼‍♀️. It still looks healthy but was covered in webs so here we go with the pest control.

I´m planning to get the Pink Dragon - I´m very happy to hear that it´s an easy one 🙂I have very good success with Silver Dragon in pon, so I´d like to get another one to keep her company 🙂 I also love the Regal Shield, so I understand your admiration 🙂 I only wish I had space for her

Have you seen Alocasia Quilted Dreams, similar to Dragon Scale, very pretty, glossy green with very dark green veins. I also have Black velvet, Melo, Maharani Grey Dragon, Chantrieri, Tiny Dancer, and Nebula as well as the Zebrina. All of mine are growing in Leca, except my babies that are in a mix of Perlite and Fluval Stratum which is now the rage in the US for propagation. My Frydek, Pink Dragon, Silver Dragon, Dragon Scale and Polly's are all doing very well in the Leca as are my orchids. It is my favorite growing medium and has made my plant care SO much easier! Thanks, so glad I found your video!
@PlantsofJoy
@PlantsofJoy 2 года назад
Yes the quilted dreams has been on my wish list for a little bit now. It's very pretty. I haven't tried fluval stratum yet but I've seen it being used a lot on plantstagram. It looks great for alocasias. I really think semihydro like leca and pon is the best route forward for growing alocasia in a home. A lot of them live as lithophytes or are semi aquatic. I still use soil it can be problematic with any moisture loving plants. Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you liked the video 🙂🪴🌱🌿
@fionapet9135
@fionapet9135 Год назад
How do you grow in leca . Does it sit in water all the time with the leca in it .. or just the leca and water and allow to drain ... and how to fertilize
@dianeparker2075
@dianeparker2075 Год назад
@@fionapet9135 Mine are in clear pots with holes, then in an outer catch pot that has 1/3 water in the bottom. I flush weekly then add fresh weak nutrient solution, that is what sits in the 1/3 in the bottom.😊

Just found you ! What is the best soil and how munch of each product! Thank you ! Love your talk !
@PlantsofJoy
@PlantsofJoy Год назад
Thank you so much 🙂. I actually don't use soil on my alocasias. I use pon (Lechuza Pon) which a porous gravely substance that works a bit like leca or semi hydroponics. I have a video of me putting a plant in pon and explaining how it works here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6X9s-hgNks4.html . You can grow them in soil but I found it difficult to keep up with the weird watering schedule and pon releases the water much more steadily. There are specialist soils for alocasias in the UK from Soil Ninja and Grow Tropicals, but I couldn't tell you the ratios I'm afraid.

Love your collection! Do you think all the varieties would do well in semi hydro? Will the corms do ok in semi hydro? Thinking about switching mine over as I am an underwaterer.
@PlantsofJoy
@PlantsofJoy Год назад
I am growing most of mine in semi hydro. I've never started a corm in semihydro though but the plant has put out pups successfully.

@TheMrAlgoh 2 года назад
Wow, your alocasia collection is phenomenal! I'm new to plants and just bought some alocasias, I'm curious, what soil mix do you use for yours? What about Fertiliser?
@PlantsofJoy
@PlantsofJoy 2 года назад
Thank you so much. I am transitioning a lot of mine to pon actually. I tend to leave them in the same nursery soil for as long as possible unless it's really especially terrible soil. Then I used to move them to a special soil mix for alocasias by soil ninja which is coco coir, bark chips, perlite, vermiculite and worm castings. That was really good stuff and you can deffo make it yourself but I don't have space for all the separate amendments. But like I said, now I am transitioning to pon when they need to get up potted and it's been going really well. I use liquid gold leaf fertiliser which is the absolute best and can be used for soil or hydro plants. Good luck with your alocasias, they are the absolute best. Which ones do you have?
@TheMrAlgoh

@@PlantsofJoy Thank you for your reply! I have silver and pink dragon, Cuprea, black velvet, amazonica and yucatan princess. They're still babies, between 6-8 inches. I'm kinda nervous of keeping them since all of them have different care needs, especially the black velvets I've heard are most prone to rot, so I use very little water on them.. I've only had them for a month so far.. potted them in a mix of garden soil, rice hulls, coco peat, perlite and just fertilised them with abit of black soldier frass. I hope mine survive to be as big and luscious as yours. Greetings from Malaysia 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾

I just want to say there are naturally occuring alocasia in australia. Edit: also macorhizza isnt the largest alocasia. Alocasia Robusta is likely the largest or at least very close to being the largest, with leaves growing upto 3.5 metres in length.
