I have been using perlite lately for all my plants, mixed with potting soil. Makes the soil more airy and less soggy. I think the problem with house plants is that especially during the winter it can take a long time for water to evaporate which increases the chance of root rot.

This. Bought most of my plants without perlite from factory and water coudnt dry out so fast during the winter and alot of my plants got root rot and some of them got into very ugly shapes and almost died. All of my plants that were with perlite from factory didnt face any of those issuses. Perlite makes air hole pockets and helps with water drainage.

What’s also very good is the fact that the walls are painted white. This magnifies the available light and increases growth without damage to the plant. If the room was darker she would need more artificial light to keep her straight. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

I just finished watching a few videos on growing elephant ear and you must be using brighter lights than the other people. Your plant looks so much better.

Beautiful Elephant Ears plant. With all Alocasia they do love it tight in the pot. I think I would’ve waited until. As a rule you should only go 1 or 1 size bigger for the pot. I also thought that the pot was way too large but I guess you know that too. In summer I think it would’ve been ok, but not winter. Your soil is good but I think it’s too dense. Try using Perlite, Marbels, stones, or Clay balls to give the soil more air pockets. It actually won’t start growing again until the roots find the sides of the pot. Have you noticed that the new leaf still hadn’t unfolded? In winter They need less watering and more light to sustain the growth. Well, she’ll be ok. Let the old leaves die a slow death. It’ll give her a chance to rejuvenate and in Spring she will be ready to Disco. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! Beautiful plants. Beautiful you, too. God bless!😊 I'm researching why I basically rotted out a Alocasia Elephant Ear bulb. Apparently I was growing it in water which is not okay inside. I've now cleaned it and repotted it in soil. I also removed it from any direct sunlight, so now in bright southern window only in the northetn hemisphere. 😊

Hey great vid. New to all this indoor plant keeping (UK) & have one of these as my first plants & it is growing mental atm!!! Re-potting tmrw. You are right about the leaving water for 24hrs, but if you can get it ..... get "established" water from a fresh water aquarium if you can. Works a treat as high in nitrates from fish waste that has been broken down. Nice vid to learn from on this journey. Ty.

Thanks for sharing. I too realized after trial and error that these elephant ears prefer higher draining soil so that's what I'm using now.

Yellowing of leaves in winter months is normal. May have been unrelated to repotting. It was the oldest leaf of the plant. I prefer to have my alocasias in the largest pots I can find, over 20 inch diameter. The leaves are so large the wind tips them over on smaller pots.

Hi from Adelaide. Just watched your video and found it so informative. Recently a friend of mine gave me an Elephant ear plant in a small terracotta pot and it has grown so much but I have noticed recently that a few of the smaller leaves have become yellow and for some weird reason I was thinking it needed more water - but no. I am so grateful to come across your channel and have subscribed. Thank you.

Pretty sure it was fine do not worry. By you repotting again it you put stress on the plant further. It's normal for transplant shock to happen.

I’ve been using fish tank water but wanted to suggest that you add the PRIME water conditioner drops to take out the chloramine too! Chlorine will dissipate in the bucket as you do but chloramine needs to be neutralized with the PRIME or any other water conditioner. Just two drops per gallon so a tiny bottle around $8 will last you a year perhaps. Is there an update?

Thanks for sharing advices, your plant looks beautifull! Im experimenting with misting it with homemade garlic water, for now the plant doesnt complain and i believe it helps against bugs, garlic has like antibiotical effect also ....

One elephant leaf grew so big it drooped over and bent its stem. I did not want to cut off such a magnificent leaf 40" long by 28" wide. I'm trying to prop it up and maybe give it some more water. Would you have any advice how to save this leaf? It is very green and I have it indoors by a large window here in Canada (its -6C outside today).

I have a question. I have the pharaoh elephant ear plant. The leaves dropped and dried, but the main stem with the rootball is fairly healthy, looking with no leaves. Will it bloom new leaves?
@melissacartier3718
@melissacartier3718 Месяц назад
Why did the leaves drop and dried, was it due to season? It’s going dormant then will regrow in spring, otherwise it needs more water to grow. Hope that helps ☺️

Hi :) thanks for this video! my plant is a bit unhappy currently. you might have a tip for me how to handle her. I only got her 4 weeks ago. she was very happy ever since. Only just week I saw some mould on top. I thought I didn't over water her. But just in case I looked at the roots. they seemed fine except some tiny bits which I removed. Since I did that her leaves are hanging low and one leave is gone already. I only watered a tiny bit after 2 days. She is not wet and not try. I'm a bit lost...
@melissacartier3718
@melissacartier3718 2 года назад
Sounds like not enough light so her soil is taking too long to dry from watering. If you’re in winter or can’t give her enough light, wait longer in between watering and only bottom water her.

I think you should have put her in a larger pot since her root system was so much. But you will have to repot sooner unless you put her in a little bit larger pot.

ONE OF MY SPECIES OF EEPHANT EAR IS THE TYPICAL RUN OF THE MILL PLANT. IT HAS SO MANY SHOOTS FROM IT THAT IT NEVER STANDS UP. IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PLANT? REGARDLESS OF CARE, AND IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN HAPPY, THE LEAVES ARE SO LONG THAT THEY WEIGH OVER AND DROOP DUE TO THE LONG STEMS. HOW CAN I CORRECT THIS?
@melissacartier3718
@melissacartier3718 2 года назад
Is it trying to face the light? It normally droops and grows towards the light. If the stem isn’t soft and it’s firm then nothing wrong. Only thing I can think of is putting into a bigger pot and shift the light so it can face up more.

I just got a giant taro a couple days ago & have read that peppermint essential oils with some soap and water works WONDERS for spider mites (which mine has). What brand of essential oils do you use? I’m not sure which brand would be safest.

@melissacartier3718
@melissacartier3718 2 года назад
Oh wow that’s so cool, u don’t have to cut them, but if you want to you can cut at the stem then wait for the remaining stem to die and then you can pull it out.

Does it have to be in a very sunny spot? Mind gets direct sunlight only for about 40 mins in the morning then the sun isn’t directly on it rest of the day so should I move it to a sunnier spot in the house?
@melissacartier3718
@melissacartier3718 3 года назад
That’s perfect, it likes indirect light so if the room is still bright for the day then that’s good 😊 if you get new leaves and see old ones droop and die off then that means you should give it more light to avoid losing leaves.
@brianhardaway9716
@brianhardaway9716 2 года назад
I don’t think it’s good to keep moving it. It has to get acclimated to the light it has. Have you ever seen a plant or tree in Nature get up and move? We are duplicating Nature in our homes. It will adjust. But if you keep moving it it might cause a negative effect. Very few plants other than Cactus’s need or can live in direct light without being burnt or going into shock. Therefore indirect bright to mid shady is ideal light for most plants. Little direct sun isn’t dangerous unless the lives are wet which will cause leaf burn.

@melissacartier3718
@melissacartier3718 3 года назад
Overwatering, so too much water or your soil mix is not airy enough and stays moist for too long. Sorry I just realised your question around brown leaves, that would be due to not enough water 😊
