This episode was valuable to me. - 69 yr old very fit female new to solo van travelling. I am pretty aware of my surroundings but you have made me feel more comfortable about my” hinky” sense of surroundings. Love that you approached your two adjacent hunters ….. I had a similar situation this past week in Canada - although I was very aware of their presence - they had no clue about me - similarly I approached - dang men are clueless sometimes lololo. We ended up having a similar passion of mountain biking …. And these my adjacent campers invited me on a ride. It was most enjoyable. Anyways I am still in search of a rescue fur companion - it will happen if is meant to be…. doing things in fear is okay and just part of our dna ….. carry on young lady.

I’m sure there’s enough comments that say this but just in case there’s not, please be more careful and never approach another camper like that while you’re alone again. There’s absolutely no reason to say hello to them and offer tea. Also learn the art of discretion. You don’t need to tell strangers you’re alone. Or anything at all. If you do need to say something you tell them your boyfriend should be back soon cause at least that will buy you time to pack up and leave. But just don’t talk to strangers when you’re alone. Period. That’s always the safest route!

As a man, it's also rough finding myself in the situation you were in with the hunters. There is no universal right answer. For some other solo female travelers - even approaching their camp in a place like this could be perceived as a threat and could result in being bear maced or worse shot with something. Would it be justified or right on their part? absolutely not but fear makes us irrational. Personally, I'm more of the 'Minding my own business and doing my own thing over here' kind of guy. I'll return a wave or passive acknowledgement but I'm not trying to chat with strangers out in the sticks lol.

Normally i stick around towns but .. on occasion when i do go camping, I stick to a rule i heard a long time ago. Always park facing out so u can drive and leave. Always only leave cheap stuff outside of the van that u do not care about or pack up at night. You never know if drunk people, if drugged out people will show up and best to always be prepared to turn 🔑 and leave. Period. Doesnt matter who you are, what protections you have. A good or bad situation, doesnt have a chance to happen if u leave it

Sometimes a genuine 'hi, how are you?'...even a 'do you need anything?' can go a long way. To the solo women out there, you are quite capable of defending yourselves. A thin skinned man masquerading as something else is more of a liability than an asset during a sudden crisis. A man travelling alone (or with his dog and fishing gear) has to take the same precautions and has the same responsibilities in that scenario, he may be more physically prepared however...but the rules are the same for all of us out there. Be kind if you can and clean up after yourselves!

Move to Colorado or Lake Tahoe when I was 23yrs old. “Unhealthy fear.”’ It keep me from starting my career around the same time..23yrs old. Yes, at 23yrs, I was all over the place. But I did start my career at 32yrs old. Really 30 yrs because it’s a long process to be hired. I became a firefighter. FEMALE TOO! Only female for 17yrs then they hired another one. Now, I am retired after 25yrs, have a pension, insurance, life insurance & a “family” of 100 + brothers that will do anything for me. Thank GOD too. Especially now that I’m sick. I certainly need all of them now. And I used them too. When my head isn’t on right. I call them & they always get me through my BS of the moment. Lol. I think you know what I’m talking about Linnea. “Healthy Fear.” I DID THE DAMN THING!! I became the firefighter I wanted to be!! Just a short delay! Lol!! Thank you Linnea. I know how it feels to travel alone. I traveled solo many times in Quebec province. I don't know if it is just sheer luck, or if I have a guardian angel looking after me, but I recall a few instances when I was really scared, that things could get wrong for me, and the guys were ok and just surprised to see a single woman alone in the wild. The last time, not so long ago, I was sleeping in my van, and suddenly at midnight a woke up hearing some stange noises. I looked out, hiding behind my curtains, only to see two guys that came in a pickup truck, throwing stuff in the river nearby from a coverd bridge. And once in a while, their flashlight would be directed towards my van. My dog didn't bark, and I was grateful for that. Between you and me, you don't go throwing stuff in a river in the middle of the night just for fun. I decided to stay put. I figured if I left, they would know for sure I saw them. And I was not equipped to outrun them in my 1988 Westfalia! So I decided to "play dead". And it was the right stategy. They finally left the area and I got back to sleep. 😅. But I didn't camp there the night after ! 😂

Thanks so much for expressing what would actually be a preferred approach of people arriving in the dark next to you. I camped in my RV for months in the desert alone and I had to strategize in all kinds of ways so I could sleep at night and wouldn’t be prey to creepy scenarios. I had a fog horn that I was prepared to release out my window! I wonder if that would actually damage my own ears! 🤪. I wouldn’t let people driving past see me either …I hope more men recognize what a different reality it is for woman in our crazy world…and help us find more freedom in being safe.

I wish more women realized that 99.999% percent of men would come running to your rescue if someone tried to harm you, or your vehicle caught on fire, or if you were broken down on the side of the road, etc. I agree there is an etiquette violation to have someone pull up on you during the night if there are other spaces available, but to live in fear of half the human race seems like a horrible existence. I understand what you're saying, but I feel for you just the same (coming from a 6'4" 260lb male that hasn't ever been scared of another human, so a very different perspective). Statistically speaking, you literally have a greater chance of being struck by lightning than you do of being harmed by a man with whom you have no previous relationship. But don't take any chances either. When I'm out boondocking I see a fair number of lone women in vans or pulling teardrop campers and such. If they're near where I was heading anyway sometimes I'll ask if they want to share a campsite with a quiet, drug/alcohol free neighbor for their safety. If they say yes great, if they seem put off by the question I'll happily move on. Since I tend to go back to the same places over and over, I'll usually tell them that I'm going to be down the road/trail about 1/2 a mile and if they need anything they can come by anytime. And then I'm on my way, leaving them to their scented candles, yoga, vegan food, journaling, and their cat. Seems like there's almost always a cat. 🙂

I I've woken up at a rest stops to find people parked right next to me with the whole parking lot empty. One of the first things I do is I need to get out to let my dog out. And if I can barely get my door open and people are gonna be staring at me. I find that kind of like rude. I think it's a human nature kind of thing but still. I usually just move to get my morning preparations on to leave. If I am out there and I feel uncomfortable I move on. Women are vulnerable on the road. Been out there many many years and have had good and bad experiences. It’s too bad women have to be protective of themselves daily, something a man may never feel often. I do not let it keep me from living, just take caution as much as possible. Stay smart and feel your intuition. Be protective of yourself…some of the friendliest people are predators. If they come to you and are too friendly that can be a sign sometimes of someone checking you out. Female speaking from being on the road over 45 yrs alone. Camping and motorcycling all over the county.

I usually tell myself ‘it’s their land too’ but when they’re really close I think Really? So much forest….I’d have told him my sweetie was sleeping in the van, a line I used once when a man followed me into my apartment, he quickly left! Obviously not the same but the point is not to give too much away. I agree, there are more good people than bad ones, was my mantra too. but what I have learned over the years of being ‘bold, brave and beautiful’ is that there are too many bad ones. You can live life boldly but protect your safety and (this is really important) protect your future joy by being relentlessly careful when you’re alone. Hope you had your Garmin on you the whole time they were there and… Thanks for addressing the safety factor. As an elder of the ‘traveling sisters tribe’ I appreciate you creating space to reflect. On another note: Hahaha ever since you became a videographer I am hyper aware of the shots. You have developed your skills magnificently. Even the background is often endearing. When you were rinsing the sprouts Akelas eyes were peaking over the dishes, with the flowers framing her white face ~it was so adorable!. So, I'm currently camped out in the forest, have been here for a few days. It's basically a dead end track and has almost no traffic. At 5am,a truck drives in and parks at the end of the track not far away, leaves truck running with headlights on and aimed my direction. Truck is still there, all tinted windows, no camper, haven't seen anyone in or out of the truck. Now that it's light, I can see it's the same truck that drove by yesterday and stopped behind my rig for a few minutes after driving on. Am I nervous? Yup. But it's a free country in a public place and that just comes with the territory for those of us that like to be away from the crowds. One thing that just amazes me is the first question out of people's mouth is "are you out here alone?" 🤦

Stunningly beautiful video, and your narration is inspiring. I played the beginning of the video about plans and life for my spouse because your observations of life were spot on. Your very wise for being so young.

"Plans are the illusion of control" - yes! I make RU-vid videos in a similar spirit as you about living full time on the road with my two cats and one of the biggest lessons for me on the road has been about the illusion of control. I can't believe how quickly the seasons are changing - that's one thing I love about being on the road, how close to nature we get to be. Also really relate to what you said about healthy fear - I'm often traveling with my partner but when I'm alone, it's just a fact that women have to be vigilant in a particular way and I also agree that we have to make space for curiosity. Sending love from my little stretch of road to yours! 💛💛💛

There are so many weirdos out there so glad you are cautious. I think it is a bit dangerous to be hiking by yourself because of bears etc or creeps.

Thank you for filming yourself in this particular situation as it happened - it's nice to know I am not the only one who is very aware of what is going on around me when I am alone in my van. Sometimes I wonder if I am overreacting so seeing someone else whom I admire go through the same thoughts and looking through their binoculars is very comforting!

Thank you for this! I get anxious out in the woods traveling as a solo female for a lot of the same reasons you talked about, and feel much safer in cities. But, I'm a loner and like to be out in the middle of nature by myself. This video helped me feel not so alone in all that, thank you :)

Actually far more crime & violence happens in the cities than the country. A good code to live by is just always remember your never truly safe, no matter where you are, so act accordingly. Is why meeting goodness in the world should be appreciated when it comes along.

I have so much to say! 1. The hike was gorgeous ! Dogs needs first. Well done. 2. I am not sure I would have approached the hunters but who's to say? 3. Alone Again? You are never alone if you have a dog. There is a big difference in being alone (no dog.) 4. Love Love a GSD. They are the ultimate companion and so peaceful to have along on a hike. ❤ Colorado Girl

I'm happy you shared this, I just last night had someone pull up in a place where I am normally alone, and having that fear come up and being kinda on alert, even in the background, takes some energy. I agree it's normal and I find it quite a physical, primal ape kind of thing. I find it really interesting to lay down and really observe those sensations in the body, like when there's a noise and all those nerves in your gut send out lightning fast signals of fear around the body - kinda cool in a way, but then your adrenaline is up and it's hard to sleep- haha 😄 Glad you felt safe afterwards and were able to chill and enjoy your time there ❤ Love you guys so much, from the UK x

People always used to tell me that I was crazy to go out by myself all the time I used to spend months at a time out in the bush hunting and fishing in my bus in the end 37 foot school bus that I made into a motorhome and I always used to tell them the only thing you have to be scared about in the bush it's humans not animals and I always pack a gun and one thing about like your van with the bus I could always start up the bus and leave of how to do that once when they partiers come to a lake and lit a fire right beside my bus I just started it up had my gun sitting in my lap and drove away when I used to have my travel trailer you couldn't do that because you're all disconnected that's what I really loved about having my boss still have it but it's not a motor home anymore it's a workshop you have a very good life being out in the bush by yourself I always loved it wish I was still out there I made the mistake of getting hooked up with someone biggest mistake ever did I should have stayed single had more and enjoyed life more

I loved seeing you on that hike with Akela off leash, and seeing you soaking up every moment in nature. That's my dream, but I carry a bit of unhealthy fear about wildlife while hiking with my dog. My dog loves being off leash, and she listens well, but I can't shake the fear of wildlife seeing her as prey and having something happen to her. So whenever we're out, I'm very alert and on edge the entire time. I wanted to ask your thoughts about this. I carry protection with me, and am aware of my surroundings, but still feel too much on edge to really enjoy my time out in nature. Appreciate any of your thoughts around this. And of course appreciate you and your stunning videography and storytelling that calms my soul every time. 💛

Thermal imagining and Utah carry permit = force multipliers. Even as a solo older male ...i want hatches top AND bottom of my van. Just makes sense. I have travelled US/Canada/Mexico overland in the 1990s. Remote trailheads/bokndock areas =places where stupid shit can happen . Prepared and unfearful. Disproportionate response is my order of the day. There are some really nice lexan high quality hatches available .
