"Alone" by Edgar Allan Poe (read by Tom O'Bedlam)

A poem about the spiritual isolation that afflicts us all, yet which some people feel more keenly than others. The closest we get to being "not alone" is when we are in the gestalt of a mutual, loving relationship as with a partner or children.
We are bound in by a closed, exclusive nervous system. The only time we are in actual contact with another person's nervous system is during coitus. Then two people can make a single beast with two backs, as some of the ancients called it, but they must have been missionaries who hadn't seen the Kama Sutra.

One of the most beautiful yet saddest poems I have heard of. And simply well done on the account that I can actually identify with it. The design of utter loneliness and isolation. Something I have experience my entire life. Truer words have never been spoken until Poe wrote that poem.

I think he saw the world as no one ever saw,, but more importantly, he felt isolated, and told us about it, which is cool, and perfectly legal. Don't we all feel that our version of "alone" is worthy of description?

what does this poem mean to you?......to me it means that Edgar Alan Poe saw the world like no one he ever knew,he saw it through eyes that knew sorrow at a very young age, eyes that saw anger at its purest form.

A bit of a stretch from Poe to missionaries and the Kama Sutra, but brilliant, nonetheless. Takes me from Poe to Shakespeare's "Othello" in one segue. This is such a wonderful poem, speaking to the aloneness in each of us. The photograph of the cloud demon is perfect, as is your reading.
