Beautiful video and walk. Believe it or not I walked from Putney to the source of the Thames in Gloucestershire in the early 1980s when the first guidebook to the Thames Path was published by the Ramblers Association. This was before it was an official National Trail. You're inspiring me to revisit the Thames. Looking forward to your next walk!

This walk was the film I was waiting for you to make . The Thames Putney to Twickenham is one of the most special places to me. I grew up in west London... and I could go on and on .. the path from Hammersmith to Barnes most recent , the last walk ever with my dad. Thanks .. special thanks to this one which I'll explain when one day I catch up with you

Beautiful. I'm so aged I've actually been in Kew Gardens when you paid just one penny to go in! I once got a bus to Barnes just because I'd never been there. I was astonished to find a "country village" with a duck pond,village green and all that,it was so pretty,then I understood why all these actors and writers I'd heard of chose to live there. That was the day I walked the Thames path from Barnes to Kew Gardens,a long enough walk for me.

These walks could do with a wake up in the form of comments - so here goes.. Aeons ago I sang in city churches (the one behind The Bank - name?) and as a choir member is St. Mary's Putney, thus bringing back pleasant memories. Soo thank you for reawakning my past....

Very nice..I was born, and Lived in putney for 56 years..The river and the footpath are as familiar to me as my own right arm. I live in Spain now, and haven't been back for 5 years..lovely to see, and brought back floods of memories,..John Christie the famous murderer was caught along from the first pub you pointed out (Dukes Head)..and there is a little stone block on the pavement which marks the start of the Oxford and Cambridge boat race. The chandlers, and marine shop by the boat houses is or was owned by a local celebrity Mr Charles (Chas) Newham, member or the London Water man's Guild...He headed the fleet of boats, in the Thames prossession, for the Queens Jubilee. Standing proudly on the bow of his boat in all his regalia, he sailed past the BBC cameras and presenter, in he most appalling weather. This was his biggest moment. Just when the sound went and the BBC presenter had lost the script. Otherwise the world would have known who he was. If you ever read this Chas, or your lovely wife Julie. At least I knew who you were...and so will a few more now..😃...Thanks john.

John - a wonderful, wonderful walk. I did this stretch of the Thames more than twenty years ago, but my memories are still very vivid. I had intended to walk the length of the Thames bit by bit (rather than in one go). I got from Tower Bridge to Walton Bridge plus one or two sections around Cookham and Marlow, but I have a good excuse. This lovely lady came into my life and we moved to Toronto and walking the length of Canada has proved impossible. One thought. Where I grew up (Canons Park, around Stanmore/Edgware) there is a brook called variously Wealdstone Brook, the River Brent and many others. How about a video? Til then, many thanks again for these happy memories. Yours in maple syrup, Michael Schwartz.

The only downside in those days is that the river was still heavily industrialised in parts and used to stink beyond Richmond was the first part that was countryside, at least to a kid brought up in the North East of London, there was also still quite a lot of shipping on the Thames and the Port of London though running down was still functional, Tower Bridge used to open regularly....so very different vibe from today !!!

I woke up in Barnes once about twenty-odd years ago and it really freaked me out a little bit..........please explain! Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to pedestrians and cyclists for some time, summer of 2020. Annoying for walkers such as myself but hugely inconvenient for residents who have to make huge detours. Worst for elderly and vulnerable people without their own transport who want to avoid bus journeys due to covid. Another great walk. The fact that you were shaking off a cold wasn't evident.

It's August Bank Holiday Weekend 2020 (Covid time) and just about all the decent places to go in the UK are ridiculous hotel prices wise... (£400 minimum for most seaside resorts, and the weather's rubbish)... But I have just booked Richmond Travelodge £90 for 3 nights, intending to walk from my beloved Craven Cottage along the river to Richmond (a part of London I have never visited, but always meant to)... Nice. No rain on the weekend so will do the walk then, then maybe head down to Hampton Court. Just searched for the walk on here and this video popped up, good stuff, it looks a very nice peaceful part of London. (The furthest West I had been along the Thames walk is Hammersmith Bridge, and that's beauitful around there)

A very relaxing and interesting 20 minutes of viewing, thank you. Incidentally, your quick visit to Barnes brought back a specific memory for me... (Never having lived in London) in 1989, on a trip to Holland, my brother and myself while passing through London decided to pop over to Barnes to visit the Marc Bolan (shrine) tree ….both of us being big T.Rex fans in our teenage years. A very kind elderly local resident escorted us to the exact location of the tree. Some old 1970s style silk scarves were wrapped around the trunk and lots of flowers and badges and messages etc pinned to the tree. Barnes seemed like quite a sedate and tranquil sort of place back then. I didn't know Holst was associate with the location. Anyway, that looked like a great walk, John.

I saw a sign at around two and a half minutes into the video which was spelled out "Putney High School GDST Boating. . ." I was under the impression the term "High School" wasn't used in the vernacular in GB? Maybe a "High School is what we in the US would call a trade school, or trade collage and not the last four years of mandatory education in the US? Yes I am aware that it isn't exactly mandatory four years and a student can leave school at age 16 or there second year into High School if they wish.

ha, I mean I'm making it more mysterious than it was really. I'd done a comedy show at the Riverside Studios that I'd written and directed so it was a heady night and I had a few drinks to celebrate. A friend of my wife's invited us to stay over at hers and we had no idea where we were going. Next morning she'd gone to work and we woke up not having a clue where we were wandering around this strange place till we eventually found our way to Chiswick High Road and realised where we were (oddly where I'd had a similar experience after a rehearsal in Chiswick Town Hall and being driven to a pub somewhere west of Gunnersbury then having to work out how to get back to Highbury at 11.30pm). Thanks for the kind words about the book - the next one is half-way written and the first 20,000 words are currently being read by a publisher so fingers crossed.

Your walk's got me thinking about doing the same journey but visiting all of those nice pubs along the way - a kind of drunken 'in the footsteps of John Rogers' although some of them look a bit pricey, probably £8 a pint - aahhh (actually pub visitations, with conversations in the pubs, by Iain, Nic and your good self would make a 'crazy' video). Fantastic video John. As others have said Mortlake is worth a diversion for "Burtons Tent Tomb", old Burial Ground and a Mortlake connection with John Dee (more recently celebrated by a small plaque on the riverside walk). The opposite side of the river would also have brought you Bishops Park in which scenes from the Omen were filmed and a shiny new 'underbridge' beneath Barnes Bridge that puts the one you used on the Barnes side to shame .

Hey John, at the end of your walks, often in the dark, do you go home by public transport? I take it you don't have to walk back 😀👍
@JohnRogersWalks
@JohnRogersWalks 5 лет назад
I certainly take public transport which does sometimes catch me out if the station’s a bit further away than I thought or there are no buses (particularly a problem if you end up outside London)

John Rogers I’m a great advocate of public transport as never driven due to eye problems. It can be very patchy though. 😟

Wrong about Kew Bridge. Kew Bridge is the one next to the pub you went to.

I make this walk regularly from Richmond to Barnes it’s magical especially during the Summer months. Usually get lunch at the White Hart, Barnes, they are right by the river and very popular at weekends.

WHAT WAS THIS MUSIC FESTIVAL, HAVE YOU THE DETAILS PLEASE, THERE WAS NO INFO WHICH IS THE VERY WEAK POINT IN THE UK. TOO MANY EVENTS ARE VIRTUALLY KEPT QUIET AND ARE UNKNOWN OF MY SO MANY PEOPLE WHO MISS OUT DUE TO THE UK'S ENDEMIC INCOMPETENT LACK OF PUBLICITY.

Hi John. I stumbled across your London’s Hidden Hamlet walk the other day and following on from seeing some lovely pictures on Facebook from a friend who recently did a walk at Richmond I thought to look up and see if you had been there and here I am. I’m only familiar with the usual tourist parts of London from going there from the various trips I’ve been on in the past but I have been to Borough Market at one time which was a great place to visit. This walk looks so lovely along the River Thames with all the boating activity of which is a big interest of mine as I love doing river and canal walks up here where I live in South Birmingham next to the countryside of Worcestershire and Warwickshire. When I saw Barnes I immediately thought that it had the air of being a seaside village or town and then you said something similar as I thought it. Thank you for sharing your videos and I can’t wait to watch some more especially the ones that follow any water. Like many others I just love the way you put this videos together as the way you narrate them with the added music combined with the glorious pictures of the walks all seem to have this really relaxing feel to them. Not only are they walking videos but they are like a calming, therapeutic relaxation video as well. What more could you ask for! P.s What was the bitter you had at the pub if you are allowed to say it on here? I do love offerings from the Fuller’s Brewery with London Pride being a favourite. My favourite breweries are divided into two categories, large and small. For a large brewery I like the offerings from the Brains Brewery in Cardiff with their SA being a favourite. For a small brewery I like the Wood Brewery in Winstanstow, South Shropshire with their Shropshire Lad being my favourite from their offerings.

thanks very much for that David. Do you know I can't remember what the beer was at the pub, but I think it was a Fuller's as well
