just curious.. do you add some kind of pinger to the tug boat hulls to ping the course heading underwater.. so submarines nearby know its a tow in progress and not to surface or run their periscope up to have a look.. i think back to the submarine that snagged the tow line off the coast of southern california a few decades ago. could be as simple as a solenoid banging a plunger on the tug boat hull .. it does not have to be a constant noise.. every 4 or 5 minutes. would be enough to tap out the heading. not that submarines need the assistance..

thank you for that comment! We have no such things installed on our tugs to be honest. Usually submarines are very good in detecting ships, especially ones that are towing a very large, heavy object with 24000 BHP :-)
