Yes my 22 Founders were former undergraduate AKA who voted yes to change AKAs name, motto, colors, and to change the direction of the sorority. There were the only AKA on campus. Nellie had graduated by the Fall of 1912. My Founders invited Nellie to an undergraduate AKA meeting where 22 voted to change AKA and Nellie voted no which resulted in a split. The majority ruled.

I have read several of AKA public history books written by Dr. Parker. She said that most of AKA activities from 1908 to 1912 were cultural in nature, but they did participate in HU student chapter of the NAACP and YWCA. Again HU NAACP was not founded on campus until 1911. The YWCA timeframe was 1910/1911.
BPrideful - I have read numerous books and writing on the 1913 Womens Suffrage March 1913. I have read notes from Soror Mary Church Terrell to Alpha Suffrage marchers. DST marched in 1913 for women rights. Since this county was founded America has a racist element to 99.9 percent of orgs but DST does not let that stop us. Dr. Height and other Deltas played a major role in the 60 Civil Rights march.
Well if you fel that way then you should talk to the editor of the video. The video was great I just wish I could have been there for the entire thing. And the probate was about 2hours long
I am happy that you acknowledge that all 22 founders of Delta Sigma Theta were indeed members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, however Delta Sigma Theta was not incorporated nationally in 1913. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc was both the first to be founded and incorporated research the dates January 15, 1908 and January 29, 1913. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 13, 1913, and Inc. in Washington on February 18, 1913 and it wasn't until 1930 when Delta Sigma Theta was nationally Inc.
Preciouspearl1908 -- HU approved the formation of DST as a campus organization with the understanding that NO OTHER CHAPTERS would be formed at other schools (which is the same thing they told OPP) so that is why DST was incorporated twice once in Feb. 1913 and again in 1930. Since 1913 the incorporation papers of DST legally authorized DST to function as a NATIONAL organization. Also, I know that KAPsi was incorporated twice and I think that APA was incorporated twice as well.
Traditionally (at least on my yard) probates were held at the end of Hell Week, before pledges were officially initiated, and everyone had their's on the same day. Now, it has become something different and seems to vary according to chapters.

I found out this to be NOT TRUE of the NAACP chapter at HU because it was not founded until after AKA Founders left. Now about the YWCA I am still researching. Reply to akanonchalant08- DST incorporation date in 1913 allowed and allows DST to be incorporated and conduct business in the District of Columbia & world wide. Everything about DST incorporation dates are not in ISOS. The 1930 incorporation date of DST was primarly to expand the purpose of DST. DST was not a federation of chapters beforehand. We had at least four National Presidents and several national service programs. The white fraternity just happened to be tryping to use our name.

Preciouspear1908- The 1913 incorporation date enabled DST to function in PERPETUITY and FULLY COVERED DST since Feb. 1913 including other chapters formed in 1914, 1915etc. The 2nd incorporation date was used to expand the purpose of DST. We have always been FULLY COVERED. In recent litigation with the producers of the BSP and all litigation involving DST our 1913 incorporation FULLY COVERS DST in any legal proceedings.
Reply to akanonchalant08 - The white fraternity just happened to be trying to use our name in 1930 when plans were already underway to incorporate. In fact, in ISOS it tell you about the formation of Grand Chapter which was established prior to 1930. By 1930 we had four National Presidents.
My Founders in 1913 were marching for womens rights. American organizations have always had a KKK element to them, but did not and will not stop DST from fighting for what we believe in. In the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Height was not given an opportunity to speak during the March on Washington, but that did not stop her. Even the Black civil rights movement had a male elist element to it.
Well im a 17yr old, and really these ladies did their thing real talk. But i show respect to all sororities because on my mom side its a legacy of AKA's, and on my fathers its delta's. So really me being mature enuff and some of these ladies or young girls that are saying aka aint nuttin or delta aint this or watever..plz stop it because the founders would like to see their daughters together and united.
Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first founded historically black sorority, but Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the largest worldwide! Both Sororities & the remaining Divine 9 have prominent members. I welcome anyone to please do your Research on the Divine Nine by reading the book of the same title written by Lawrence C. Ross.
The NAACP student chapter at HU was not founded until after the AKA Founders had graduated. Yea I know you guys claim that they worked with the student chapter, but that is not so. The student chapter was founded on HU campus in Fall of 1911. Now a lot of AKA worked in the NAACP in their communities after graduation. I know that the YWCA was on HU campus in 1910/1911, but I am researching to determine if it wasthe Fall or Spring of 1910.
BPrideful - The point is that my Founders were not used by White women. My Founders knew the purpose of the March. They marched with Soror Mary Church Terrell and Soror Nannie Helen Burroughs, and Ida B. Wells. In fact, WEB DuBoise gave kudos to my Founders in a write up in The Crisis.
All 22 Founders of DST were in fact AKAs, both organizations were incorporated in 1913! Differences of opinion brewed on the direction of the Sorority dating back to 1912 & thus Miss Quander, graduate member of AKA, felt AKA needed not be dissolved, while the current 22 Undergraduate members of AKA felt otherwise, including the only woman to be both President of AKA & DST Myra Hemmings! Thus Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was born! NO ONE WAS REJECTED!

"There was no Alpha Chapter in those days, just one group of mostly privileged women at Howard University, who had drawn up a ritual for induction, and sponsored several social affairs for their friends and invited guests. There was no incorporation, no thought of making the sorority a national or international service oriented organization, and little seriousness of purpose."
Actually Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was incorporated twice. Once in February 1913 and again in 1930. This is a fact. Do your research. ISOS and Shaped to Its Purpose are good books on DST. Everything about DST is not on our website.
Reply to AKAnonchalant08- Topic: Inc. of DST - The 1913 incorporation papers of Delta says that DST was incorporated which is the same thing that the 1930 incorporation papers. Both sets of inc papers are proved to members and they say that same thing. Only difference is that the 1930 purpose of inc. was expanded. Authority to conduct business anywhere was granted to DST in 1913 and 1930 incorporation.
Reply to AKAnonchalant08 - Topic: Federation of chapters - I saw what you are referring to in ISOS on page 27, but if you go to page 239 it says "that Delta, as she would often say, WAS NOT "a federation of chapters" but a national organiation whose chapters worked in the interest of the whole." Note: Depending on what edition of ISOS that you have access to, the page numbers may be off by two or three pages either before of after the page number that I indicated.
I grew up in not only a Greek affilliated home, but family... I know what goes on, I know what to and what not to do.. especially when I get to campus... All of this to say Ladies,I am not trying to come off like I know EVERYTHING because I dont Im just saying you cantassume that high school students dont know what they are talking about depending on the topic
No, generally speaking probates are a sign of pledging or at least that has been my experience. Non-pledging greeks tend to just show up on the yard with nalia on the Monday following initiation.
So please just enjoy the presentation and stopping complaining about what should have been done because if it was your probate you wouldn't care that you didn't move around, or that you didn't step you just be proud to officially and in front all the people you love to wear your colors.
Preciouspear1908- I hope that you do not think that AKA is the only D9 sorority that can uses pearls. We have been using pearls in our symbols since 1913. The AKAs did not start using pearls until 1921.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is also the ONLY recognized by the UNITED NATIONS as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) for our Outstanding Dedication to Community SERVICE-NO OTHER! This transpired in March 2003! Once Again, If you do not believe me, I more than welcome anyone to do the research on this fact.- Google It if you have to.
My Soror is correct. AKA was not incorporated until 1913. If their organiztion is such a serious matter, why didn't the founders incorporate? It was merely a social club during this time.
Some people are just STUPID. As a matter of fact why are these NONGREEK and members of others organizations concerned with what they did during their process. Their presentation was GREAT. Question how can you call them paper who are you and you don't know what went on with them because YOU'RE NOT THEM!

Phoenics, was this comment about changing mottos and all that directed towards me? If so, I don't even know what you're responding to. I love my org just like you love yours. If I had wanted to be an AKA, I would have done that, but I chose the way I wanted to go, just as you did. As for my Founders, yes they wanted change. They wanted more focus on community service. They did what they felt was necessary to achieve that. I don't have to hate on AKA to love my DST

All organizations on HU campus from the drama club, to the debate team, to HU literacy socities had to have a constitution that HU approved of. AKA did start the black sorority movement in America. But again what did AKA do SERVICE related from 1908 to 1912.
Yes, All 9 stand on the principles of Scholarship, Service, etc., however Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has stood on the foundation of Service since its inception. and this was exhibited by its 1st brave act as the ONLY Black organization to participate in The Women's Suffrage March on Washington, D.C. in 1913- during the time of Segregation & before the 19th Amendment granted ALL Women the right to vote in 1920, before the Voting Rights Act & Civil Rights Acts of the 1960s!

My 22 Founders were true to their oath and the democratic process of the majority voting members of the chapter vote carries the motion. Also, there was never any intention to create another sorority just to make AKA service sorority. AKA Founders, the founding date, history 1908-1912 would have been preserved. I have read Pearls of Service where Nellie says that my Founders wanted to smash AKA to bits and change everything. Will post more tomorrow.

Okay, the Delta founders wanted to take to the streets and march, and perform other community "service", etc. *sipping my sweet iced tea with my white gloves on and fanning myself cuz it's getting hot in here* However, from where did they learn the significance of having a Greek-lettered organization for Black women in the FIRST place? Before AKA, there WERE NONE. Where did they learn to draft a constitution? From where did they get the IDEA for symbols, emblems, etc.?
Regardless of what I put in this video the probate was good. I don't know what you expected from this video I'm guessing some stepping well they didn't do that and if they did I would have included it! They didn't really move a lot but that wasn't the point. The point was to show Howard University the new additions to the greek family and the probates are just to show us who they are and to remind us what they stand for not for all of us to criticize.

PART 1 AKAnonchalant08 - Since AKA was never meant to be a part of one's life after college and that your Founders never meant AKA to be more than an undergraduate experience why do AKAs make so many any negative comments about DST? When my Founders voted to change the name, motto, colors, agenda, create graduate chapters, and incorporate alpha chapter of AKA it was not to threaten AKAs existence.
