I have one that looks very much like yours. Mine had a curious life. Captured by the Marines before 1969 from the Vietcong. They decided to get rid of a stockpile of M1s in Da Nang armory and to sell them off to the Marines that wanted one for $10. I picked mine because it had a nice stock and wasn't beat up like the military version. I also got an M2 that the armorer mislabeled. But I didn't get to bring that back to the states. I was in the navy and ran patrol boats and other vessels. I took the Alpine along and used it a few times, so the M1 fought on both sides. It has better hitting power at close range than I expected. But less accurate than the Garand or my Springfield. When I got back to the states, you could buy surplus ammo for 4-6¢ a round. Some places sold it by the pound. The ammo was usually Lake City '44. I still have some.I used it like a .22 and got a couple coyotes. Illegal for deer in my state.
I purchased a National Ordinance from a guy at work. It had a very low serial number. I traced it to 1962 manufacture. It has ALL G I milsurp parts except the receiver. It was reasonably priced, so I grabbed it. It had a lot of jamming problems. The chamber was all tore up. I had it rebarreled. It shoots like new.
The first thing that I noticed is your carbine has a bayonet lug. In the ETO during WWII, there were no bayonet lugs on carbines. In the Pacific, the Marines, in later battles like Iwo Jima, Saipan and Okinawa, were issued carbines with the bayonet lug. Looks like a nice piece!
I'm still kicking myself for not buying one I could have got for $600.00 It was from Thailand national police IIRC. Howa were made in Japan and were pretty much mil spec except for the rear sight.
@@kman0146 Yes , the US lend leased M-1 and M-2 carbines to Taiwan and they wanted more , so Howa of Japan - produced them for their military and law enforcement !
Just a few years ago, right before they closed for good, Southern Ohio Gun (SOG) had 30 carbine ammo for around $12.00 for 50 rounds. I bought myself some but not enough. If I only had known! I got some soft point Israeli m1 30 cal. ammo too.
@@TheMilsurpMan I went there directly to pick up my ammo order. The place was a big old warehouse with no signage out front and when you went in you had to knock on a wooden sliding 'window' and someone would open it and ask what you were there for. It felt so secretive. It was like going to some Black Op sight. 😅
