Just in time for Halloween, we're shining the spotlight on Altered Beast, a port of the arcade game where you play a resurrected centurion who has the ability to transform into powerful beast-men to battle an army of undead forces. Only thing is this is the Master System conversion we're looking at, as Sega once again attempts to squeeze one of its flashier coin-ops onto an 8-bit cartridge, with the expected results. Even though they had a 16-bit conversion standing by to herald the arrival of Sega's new flag-bearer in the U.S. video game wars.

I got this for Christmas in 89. My parents couldn't afford the Genesis. Pretty rough😢

From this video, I honestly think this looks pretty good, apart from the choppy graphics and controls. I really enjoy how these graphics look. I am sure I will change my mind about this game once I play it though 😂

While I enjoyed watching this review, and though I admit there might be a bit of nostalgia bias on my part, I intensely object to the assertion that it’s one of the worst games for the system. I got this title for Christmas. And as the only kid on my block who owned a Master System, I can say with certainty that there is no way Altered Beast can be considered among the worst games in that console’s library. Sure, it’s by no means perfect, but it’s a charming port in its own way and you can’t in good conscious say it’s as bad as those terrible “card” games like My Hero or Hang-On.

Altered Beast on the Genesis/Mega Drive was a bad game that looked and sounded great for the time. Altered Beast for the Master System is the reason babies cry.
