Dude even in 2013 your videos are epic! I see no difference in quality in this retrospective video compared to Netflix documentaries like the toys that made us. Your work speaks for itself! Awesome job as always.

I never knew this was considered a bad game. Sure, I get it. It's a simple game and can be a little clunky at times. Was it the Super Mario Bros. of the Genesis? No, that would be reserved for a little blue hedgehog but as a launch title it really showed off what the system was capable of.

My kids still love to play this with me. Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Alien Storm are my other favs to play two player on.

I personally have always loved Altered Beast! It's a simple side scrolling beat 'em up but I just love it's simplicity. Yeah the Genesis version is definitely the version to get!

I remember getting that Altered Beast Sega Genesis bundle for Christmas in 1989, Awesome game!!

Sonic the Hedgehog was packaged with mine. I got the Sega Classics Collection downloaded on my Xbox one and Altered Beast is there though as well as a couple of the Shinobi games. Shadow Dancer which is one of the best of the Shinobi games in my opinion and the one I have the most nostalgia for.

I must have been about six or seven when I saw Altered Beast for the first time in the arcade, and I remember my mind being totally blown. And now I play it with my five year old son on our Genesis and we love it.

Whenever I went to my cousin's house as a kid, we made sure to play this, and it freakin' ruled. The simplistic action may be boring now, but it's PERFECT for a tiny kid. It's a damn shame Sega never really expanded on this and evolved it as a series; the GBA one by THQ was pretty good, but then that PS2 one... I mean, we never even got it in North America, Sega was so embarrassed by it. It's crazy to me that they never did a 3D one during the Model 2 era in the vein of Dynamite Cop or Slash Out in the arcades on the Model 2 board, or heck, that they don't do one with Platinum Games or even someone like Omega Force (I could totally play an, "Altered Beast Warriors" game!). This series has been horribly mismanaged. Sure, it did its job back in the day to get people's attention onto the Genesis, but it could've grown into such an amazing series if they just invested in some quality sequels and expanded on what the gameplay should be... makes me sad thinking about the wasted potential here.

Altered Beast was mind blowing at the time. It was my first game of that console generation and it was more about the presentation and impact it had, introducing the new machine, for me. The soundtrack and art style I still think are some of the best on the system. The gameplay is decent but nothing special. I still recently enjoyed learning the game and doing a 1 CC on the hardest mode. In the past I used the continue code which I believe is in the manual, so still legit. I saw the game in arcades prior and it was insane to see something like that at home after the NES.

I remember my buddies cousin would bring his genesis over and we were always partying with that sucker. He was 15 we were 10 in 1990.

I grew up religiously playing this game in my parents basement. I'm greek, I was always really into the artstyle... Fast-Foward to now... I'm a developer and got here by painting graffiti on the streets. My love for this game will never die.

I remember i was 10 years old wen i walked in to a store and was blown away by the arcade of this game to this day i think is awesome

8:44 I was 5 at the time and my younger brother was 3 and we both loved the game instantly and we grew up in Europe where we didn't have evil/satanic phobias like in the US at that time, so our parents were totally fine with it because it just looked like the fantasy themed game that it is.

There is nothing like Altered Beast even now. It was original and classic.

My parents (Gen Xers) have always said their generation wasn’t into gaming (which is complete bull shit) while their generation was the generation that started gaming as a trend in pure sight. Your dad proves that age and generations don’t mean anything in reality, just pure passion and love for something that’s changed our lives.

I loved this game back when it came out. I do remember it being pretty short though. But if i were to play it for the first time today i can see what people just say its a meh kinda game. I still have my original copy

Never knew it had a reputation of being bad? This is also one of the first Genesis memories I have. I loved it even though it creeped me out. Neff freaked me out.

It doesn't matter what side of the 16-bit war you were on. EVERYBODY played this game. My memory of this is going to a friend's house (they just got a Genesis) and seeing the best graphics I had ever seen. They handed me the controller, and I believe I completed the entire game in less than an hour. I must say, the graphics were amazing for the time, but the game didn't leave a very good impression on me, considering how easy it was. Anyway, great video and keep 'em coming!

I only ever played the Master System version of Altered Beast. My cousin gave me a Power Base Converter with that and Dead Angle. I wasn't super impressed by it but did play it nonetheless. I do agree about the tone being dark and captivating. It made the game very memorable.

Man when I played the sega genesis mini and played these segas games for the first time in 2020 I fell in love with all of them including altered beast. Playing it with my brother made the game even better. Keep up the good work.

To me Altered Beast is perfect. It's fares really well against the arcade version too. Who doesn't like it didn't own it in the early 90's. I had about 15 friends who swapped and loaned games to each other and this is one of our favorite games and i still play this a few times every year.

Tyler, I am really loving your channel since I discovered it recently - especially all the old home footage and videos about consoles/games I never had (like this one!). I’m curious if you were ever formally taught video/audio editing or have you just learned as you went along? Your editing is really impressive on a level that I would aspire to.

This was an impressive-looking game that did an OK job as a showcase for the system. It looked nice in screenshots and in demo kiosks but it did absolutely nothing to show the kind of smooth action gameplay the Genesis would become known for.

I love altered beast! Me and my cousin would play this game all the time on my uncle’s Sega genesis back in 1997. Tyler you are right this game is scary like Castlevania but I still loved playing it when I was 5 years old.

I'm in your camp of liking altered beast. I had the arcade game 2 blocks away in a nightclub that as a young boy was difficult to get in there and play. My buddy won the genesis on the radio with altered beast and traded me for my nes. I was very happy to have it at home and be on 16bit

I understand and respect that for some people, it is a great game. It certainly showed better graphics and sound than what the mega-drive/genesis could do. I first played it in 1990, when I was 12 years old, and I'm sorry to say, it didn't impress me at the time. Sure, the graphics were nice, but it just felt boring and slow to me. These days I have a good understanding of why it was slow for me - As an Australian, we used PAL and not NTSC, so the game ran about 15% to 20% slower (from memory, could be wrong on the speed difference) here than it did in the United States. I see it much like "Shadow of the Beast" on the Amiga, which also had amazing graphics and sound, but once you started playing it, well it also wasn't much fun to play. But I seem to be one of the few that didn't enjoy Altered Beast, I also got bored with "Golden Axe", which again had great graphics but the gameplay didn't grab me.

I still love Altered Beast. I never had it as a kid but have played it on Xbox Live Arcade and Sega @tgames console. It made me want a Genesis.

I remember this being famously bad, even though I had it I can’t really remember much about it.

At the time it was fantastic coming from the Master System and being in a niche of gamers that wanted their games to play just like the Arcade ones. I was very happy for Altered beast because to me it was just like the one in the Arcade unlike the Master System conversion

The problem is people are scoring the game based on what we have around us...Altered Beast for its time was amazing, ahead of its time really...we were coming from Mario and Duck Hunt and pac man and Atari...To have a game were you could morph into a bear or a dragon at that time was freakin awesome...Golden Axe was very much the same way. The game seemed advanced compared to all the cartoon like stuff we had out at the time

Altered Beast was a huge game for me. I remember seeing it in the arcade and to play it on my cousin’s CDX was just awesome. Of course, the dark tones would have definitely made our parents upset had they known.

I didn't know anybody at the time that hated Altered Beast. I thought it was a cool game because it combined two things that I like: a beat em up set against the backdrop of Greek mythology.

It’s all I had for my genesis for 2 months until I could afford to buy another game. I played it thousands of times.

This is somewhat unrelated, but have you heard of that documentary/ movie console wars that aired on CBS last year? They use like 5 clips of your MRL show and I'm assuming that stuff is available for public use or if you even knew that it was being used. They use you and your dad dancing in front of the sega genesis "ANOTHER NINTENDO GAME??" ""Its the new Nintendo!!!! You got me the new NINTENDO!!" A shot of you doing the sega scream And "I'm not into SeGa~~ Now its Nin-Ten-Do~~~" I watched it the other night and it was just funny seeing clips.from your show haha.

I mean the game was a very good title to show off some of the Genesis capabilities and it looked amazing back then if it was the first time you were playing a 16 bit game. But If I were to play it today I just can't stand it, it hasn't aged well and even the story is nonsense. I would love to see a remake with adequate gameplay and more rpg elements perhaps I know there were a couple of sequels but they were bad I believe. I can't deny tough I have good memories of it as a child.

My favorite is on Master system for me.
