Still waiting for Cody to admit that he hates Furries. Come on battle brother, I know you just wanna see them all put down, Germania built, and that big beautiful sideways boob-shaped building known as the Volkshalle bring it all together!
You know what, i think in the future someone will transformer our Skycraper into a "space cruiser". And when the time come's, our people will lunched those building as "escape port" into the space, slowly turn them into a Starship to aid the Rebellion, and fought against the "evil" Galactic Empire!
So they were planning to create a 2300ft spire, just for you to have a traffic jam thousands of feet in the air and for your car to have a chance of falling off and crushing someone down below. Seems legit.
"We, the Soviets, have liberated the workers from the brutal regime of the Tsar. In celebration we're gonna use all the workers of the country to build the PALACE OF SOVIETS"
Soviets were literally workers councils. In theory, the soviet government was supposed to be run by a system of workers councils who would send representatives up to local councils, who would in turn send representatives to regional councils, and these in turn would send representatives to a central council. This council would in turn appoint/elect some of its own representatives to top government positions (hugely overly simplifying). The country was supposed to run like a giant trade union. In principle, calling it the "palace of the soviets", was stating that it was a property of the soviet citizens. In practice the system had some serious weaknesses that prevented it from being the beautiful democracy it was supposed to be. One was that the people at the top could effectively purge whoever they wanted from the lower ranks, and could also heavily influence how they voted. Additionally every member of the soviets had to be members of the communist party, which even in the USSR excluded a large portion of the citizenry (eg. nobody who was religious could be a member).
I remember that, but they might have made a mistake there cause in that reality the Twin Towers not only never fell, but also existed alongside it. They would've occupied the same place.
Vinícius I don’t think the creators gave the red-verse reality much thought in the season 1 finale when it was revealed that the original WTC wasn’t brought down. When we got more information about how different the red-verse was from our reality, the creators couldn’t redact the WTC, so the Gaudi building was put elsewhere instead of its original planned location.
The reason you keep bringing up the Eiffel tower is because after it, everyone wanted to make a tower just as tall or taller. So it's used as a reference point.
Some French artists apparently considered it an eyesore when it was built. There's a story about some critic who would eat lunch there so he wouldn't have to look at it.
KAISERREICH?! BREAK THE CHAINS EVERY MAN A KING LIVE FREE OR DIE FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA RECLAIM THE BIRTHRIGHT DOWN WITH THE TRAITORS, UP WITH THE STARS! UPHOLD THE MANDATE ETERNAL FORWARD THE 5 COLOUR FLAG! HAIL TO THE VHOZD DIRECT RULE FROM LONDON Surfs up dudez
Honestly, it's a shame Gaudi's hotel was never built. To me, it looks fantastic, and Gaudi was obsessive enough that I can say with certainty that it would've been a strong and well built building. For that matter, it's a shame more of Gaudi's ideas weren't built. Man was so obsessive and intelligent that I can guarantee you that if he was born today, he would be the biggest Minecraft nerd out there.
@@mrkafkaesque8299 I don't think it's bad, I've just heard a lot of people say it's ugly that know nothing about brutalist architecture or architecture in general. Personally I think it's beautiful. It's very imposing in person and serves it's artistic and fundamental purpose, and sadly many people fail to understand it. I do believe a century from now it will be valued as a cultural icon(hopefully sooner.)
>"I don't feel so good" "that's just the mass starvation settling in Comrade, don't worry we've already blamed that on the someone else who isn't us, we swear. And besides, it is good for the nation, we don't need those greedy people who eat to much anyway."
I was always intrigued about the Palace of the Supreme Soviet. It was the section I most re-read in a book called 'Stalinist Architecture' that showed off that and other lovely building ideas for the Soviet Union. Also makes me want to re-watch Fringe. The episodes in the alternate dimension where all sorts of alternate buildings pop up... PLUS ZEPPELINS!
The videos where you talk about things that interest you are the best🥰 this one reminded me of older videos of you where you talked about all the various scenarios. I don't watch your videos that often anymore, your new ones are just different to the older ones. But this one reminds me of the older ones
I think there should be more of these. It's always interesting to take a look at buildings never made/completed and how the finished building would have impacted the world.
“Not because they’re crazy ideas or Nazis invaded” Craziest shit, this is the second time I hear this line this week, the first, unsurprisingly, was in history class
Perhaps it would’ve survived the attack unlike the twins. Since buildings back then weren’t made to b lightweights like the more modern buildings. I would imagine this building being made of really thick steel beams incased in reinforced concrete. Which would’ve made it nearly indestructible
Nigo Maramag I’m sure the plane wouldn’t of damaged the building nearly as much as the wtc. The planes went into the towers like a knife through butter, if this building were made of heavy steel and reinforced concrete and tons of masonry. The plane would probably go through the exterior and cause some damage to the floors but the reinforced concrete core would likely b unaffected
Nigo Maramag it would basically b like a bunker, crashing a plane into it would b similar to one crashing into a mountain. The building would b a mini mountain and would survive basically unscathed if it was built sturdy enough
honestly love these kind of videos, sorta thought this one was short. Id love to see you do a series or miniseries on building/structures that never came. I think you'd be able to do a good one on mega-structures never built
I've only just discovered your videos with the "State Songs Pt. 1" and I'm looking forward to part 2. Of the videos that I've watched this is my favorite so far. More of this would be great. Even if not, you've earned a sub.
The USSR: "We're communists and care about the working class, we hate the excesses of the monarchy." Also the USSR: *Plans to waste a huge amount of resources building the Palace of the Soviets*
Yea the funny thing is, commies do love to style their building in a neoclassical manner (ornaments and all), contrary to their belief. It was meant to counter the international style that is (at that time) booming on western countries like america which simplifies buildings to a boxy shape
Communists are only hiding behind “human rights,” but in fact they are more bigger capitalists than the hated by communists rich people from the Russian Empire and the West. My grandmother told me that in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century, peasants themselves earned money and lived well, and only those who did not want to work, hated that system about it and wanted communism in Russia.
@@Erix442 it's not that simple. Russia was undergoing social and economic changes and things had improved in a 50 year span before ww1 but then the war happened and made things complicated which brought upon the communist revolution.
Gaudi was a genius! I sat on his iconic bench (100% out of stone), my lord was it comfy! Also, considering his hotel was on the same spot as WTC, that would be one *MASSIVE* butterfly effect.
When the unification happenned of germany (1871), what if The currently Netherlands, Flanders, Austria, Luxembourg Germany and Switzerland united into one nation back then?
Another excellent video, thank-you. Massive highway projects in the 1960s were not limited to the United States -- we had our share of ugly developments here in Canada too. Several historic buildings in Downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia were demolished to make way for a highway that was never completed. It was a massive expenditure for no purpose.
I think I'd prefer buildings inspired by the "hotel attraction" than the empire state building. I think they'd look more interesting than the bunch of boxes we got.
Gus Gusserton It would’ve fizzled out due to the economics of architecture, boxes are significantly cheaper than rounded edges and they’re more space efficient.
I'd hardly call the Empire State a generic box. It's quite a lot prettier than many other buildings, especially when you look closer at the gorgeous art deco details.
At the time, the Lower Manhattan Expressway made some sense (apart from the buildings). A quick way to get from New Jersey to Long Island is STILL needed.
The thing about the bruitalist architecture. Here in Germany we have some well known buildings that look similar. But they are pretty beloved, its basically impossible to get a space there. Because everything is green and plated. Its quiet wired, as walking through feels a bit like walking through some wired mix of nature and architecture.
ahhh, that brutalist highway through Manhatten is gloriously hideous. I love it. such a bad idea it needs to exist. I need to see more of those pictures
I'll probably never gonna get why all the hate towards brutalism, I always thought it looks really cool. Then again, I like cold aggressive looking buildings that loom over humanity.
Are we talking Soviet Brutalism or Nazi Brutalism? If Soviet Brutalism, that shit is absolutely disgusting and depressing, yet Nazi Brutalism is somehow awe inspiring and uplifting. Idk how but that's just how it is to me at least. I love the Volkshalle, the Nuremberg Parade Grounds, and Olympic Stadium. But looking at anything the Soviets built makes my skin crawl, especially those damn apartment blocks
Please do a part two! I expected sth like the Tokyo Bay Pyramid. But these "lesser known" ones. Those are really interesting (starts googleing). Talking about a part two... I used the lockdown to finally buy and read the Atlantropa Articles. Please write another book at some point!
The old world trade center was an eyesore in my point of view not sure how I'll feel about the alternative Also glad France went with the Eiffel tower over the the giant screw
Yeah Hotel Attraction just stands out so much against the New York of today. Kinda like The Thumb in Paris, a skyscraper in the middle of the older part of Paris.
agreed. They looked like someone saw a generic office building and said "lets make 2 of those but also make them really tall". I think that the new wtc looks so much better
yeah like most buildings from the 60s-70s are pretty ugly. Older skyscrapers like art-deco and modern ones made mostly of glass and not just giant boxes are good tho
I saw the Palace of the Soviets in the thumbnail and remembered the Youjo Senki movie I (finally) watched a few weeks prior and thoguht: "Hey, a convenient and easy way (as well as the sole reason) to learn about The Strucure I Know Nothing About that Tanya blew up."
let's face it, the fact they couldn't be bothered to even try to give it a more appealing name than "Brutalist" shows how little they care about the people who have to look at it.
I'll tell ya straight: New York's traffic on a normal day is a royal mess of bottlenecks with long chains of cars stuck bumper to bumper between each other and these chains could pretty much stretch from 50 feet to 2.5 miles long, and I'm not even talking about Manhattan where it can get even worse. I feel that it's definitely for the best that that highway plan was scrapped because turning the NY traffic system into something imitating the LA traffic system could be seen as intimidating for both new and veteran drivers, giving them something new to fear on the road.
"Construction is more expensive than previously thought." That's the case every single time the government wants to build something. Anywhere from a new High Speed Rail corridor down to a local side street improvement in town. It's never a surprise anymore when a public works project cost moves from a couple million to tens of millions.
The problem is mostly space. The point of skyscrapers is to create as much space inside of them with the least ~~surface area~~ (EDIT: sorry, i meant cross section area parallel to the ground, not surface area, i corrected myself in the next message) since land costs a lot in cities, and rounded buildings like that hotel by gaudì have less volume for the same area. Do they look nicer than squares and cubes? Yeah (at least to normal people, i like the squares, they feel more organized). Would they be mainstream? Probably not. They would just be for special buildings that are more cultural landmarks than business centers.
3:27 Stalinist public architecture is generally ornate ostentatious Neoclassical stuff, so the style actually fits right in. Official tastes only pivoted away from historicizing styles after his death. Stalin loved his Dictator Chic.
Interesting vid. Didn't know Gaudi had planned that building! Here's a video you might enjoy doing keeping with the alternate history and Catalonia themes: what if the Archduke Charles of Austria had won the Spanish Succession War? It can be either a total victory (he takes all the kingdoms of the Crown) or agreeing to peace proposals by which Philip takes Castille and Charles takes Aragon. Keep up the good work!
It would be a target but there other targets like the White House and the Senate would be attacked first. Twin Towers represented western culture and America culture of capitalism and the most iconic American city. The hotel just represents the most iconic American city. The twin towers where actually important for trade. A hotel while probably being a important building for money in new York wouldn’t be important for America or western civilization. They may attack the trade center where ever else it was made.
AHH: Alternate architecture Me, an intellectual: Opens Cities: Skylines Also a NYer, I just can't imagine a city with an icon that isn't the ESB. Especially with a name like Hotel Attraction
