Well I am new to this whole quail thing, as a matter of fact I just went into lockdown today with my 33 eggs from SWGB, and I am learning tons everyday so thx Terry for the very informative vids I am in So Ga so our climes are the same, I never would have known it was more or less that simple. Thank You Greatly Appreciated.

Awesome info Terry. I've been having some issues with a new incubator that had an egg Crack in it last round, only getting %25 hatch rate for that run. After cleaning & sterilizing (not fumigating) 2 months ago, I started running small egg sets for baluts (30 each day). After candling, I'm still getting poor fertility. My breeders are all young healthy roosters (i.e. "foamy") and the do mate with the 3, 4 or 5 hens pending the cage, but still poor fertility rate. It's been winter time cold here, so I collect throughout the day - some still warm when loading the in the tray. I've made some adjustments for the last two racks, just to see if that can help (storing the eggs at 60°f in 70% humidity vs 50° in a cooler until loading). I've also tried the H202 mist and rainwater rinse "patented" technique and will candle those this eve. I plan on artificially insemination all my hens with my best rooster(s) just to ensure the next run is %100 fertilized. If that doesn't help then it must be something with the incubator. The temp has 5 separate thermometers showing ideal 37.5°C in all areas, and the humidity is double checked with 2 digital readings. Perhaps I will need to resterilize and this time fumigation with Potassium Permangenate and formalin gas (outlined in the wynola ranch hatching tips .pdf from Missouri stare extention). I may try a smaller incubator and do a small batch just to eliminate that. I have had %80 hatch rates, and nothing has changed with the electronics, controller, machinery, so I'm guessing it is the males. I have swapped out layer feed with breeder feed, but they lay as if they don't notice a difference. That being said - there is a story that 2 brands of tractor supply layer feed has caused flocks to stop laying. My feed comes from an Amish country feed mill, and all non GMO. I hate to sell hatching eggs if I can confirm they are viable. Hate to have to artificially inseminate every day... I get enough work at that with my own "chick" :) Your pal in RDG PA Doc - Tully River Quail

Hi Terry great video. Question about artificially inseminating quail. Is this done only every 7 days or every day and will 7days of those eggs be fertile? Thanks!
@ledakerrigan8403
@ledakerrigan8403 Год назад
after they breed are the eggs fertile right away and how long will eggs stay fertile after mating? just curious because I like that method better.

this video is great. im soon going to get two quails and a rooster (i have a plan to separate them) but ive done research and heard that you can inseminate a female quial with a rooster. how would i do that?
@WhoisMichelleCollie
@WhoisMichelleCollie 2 года назад
love that idea. also saves your hen from getting scalped, and you can keep records if you have leg bands on them. Is there a wait time till when you incubate the eggs or can you right away?
@CoturnixCorner
@CoturnixCorner 2 года назад
i wait one week from the time of breeding, whether AI or with a rotated rooster.
@WhoisMichelleCollie

@@CoturnixCorner but to get a fresh batch of babies with a different male, don't you have to wait 30 days?
@CoturnixCorner
@CoturnixCorner 2 года назад
@@WhoisMichelleCollie Yes, if. you want to use a different rooster you will need wait for at least 30 days before introducing her to the new male and then 7 days before collecting eggs for incubation.

How many days til the eggs are fertile after artificial??? And how long after 1 insemination does the hen remain fertilized?
@Thecrazyraven.
@Thecrazyraven. 2 года назад
Does the Insemination make the eggs fertile starting with the next egg laid within 24 hours ?
@CoturnixCorner
@CoturnixCorner 2 года назад
I doubt it, as the next egg to be laid is already shelled. I wait one week to be sure I'm getting fertilized eggs.
@Thecrazyraven.
@Thecrazyraven. 2 года назад
@@CoturnixCorner wow that’s neat that one insemination will last for weeks !! 👍. I thought that a rooster had to mount hens each day for the following days eggs to be fertile. I’m learning so much !
@thebottbunch4864
@thebottbunch4864 2 года назад
Also, how many hens have you found you can AI at one time with one rooster? I have a pen that can hold 10 hens and I’m wondering if I could do all 10 at once
@CoturnixCorner
@CoturnixCorner 2 года назад
With that many hens I would leave the rooster in for 24 hours, remove him for a day and then another 24 hours to be sure he serviced all the hens. TBH, I would probably just leave a rooster in full time with the 10 hens, just to be sure you get a good fertility rate.
@5yearplan269
@5yearplan269 2 года назад
So you’ll get 7 fertile eggs from just that artificial insemination? And also 7 more from that short time the other three were together?
@CoturnixCorner
@CoturnixCorner 2 года назад
Eggs can be fertilized for up to a month from a single mating, but fertility drops off fast after two weeks. Which is why we breed or inseminate every seven days.
@thehazelnutspread
@thehazelnutspread 2 года назад
How long do the boys remain separated from the other birds and are there any problems because they're separated? In the comments, you said that you collect eggs for 7 days before you set them. Do you mean that those eggs are fertile and that you're just waiting for a big enough batch to incubate? I'm assuming that the next egg laid will be fertilized but maybe I'm wrong.
@CoturnixCorner
@CoturnixCorner 2 года назад
Yes, just collecting enough to incubate. And no, I don't see any issues by keeping the males separate from the hens. I wait for 1 week after the first mating to be sure of fertility.
