Use a dummy so the dog can locate and retrieve it. It's a different action to the ball throwing cycle. You can train the dog to wait before sending it off to retrieve.

Honestly, that Spaniel is too much dog for that guy :D. Tell him to go hunting, either for birds, bed bugs or whatever to harness that drive

Nose Work too! Like if he wants to compete, pairing a scent with either the ball or a treat can really help without having to actually hunt, for those people who may not want to hunt. Hope that helps.

just go hiking with the dog OFF leash- the dog will exercise himself and use his nose as intended. and the human will get some exercise also!
