This one is more detailled and serious.
The work is simple,no fancy tools required.
If you don't have an impact gun,just use a rubber band and a belt,a big pipe wrench or an old accessory belt to avoid the pulley to rotate when you loosen the nut or tighten it.

Great video. One tip: a small two or three jaw puller would have made short work of that bearing. They can be rented at most auto parts stores. A lot easier then using a grinder to cut the bearing off, and less chance of damaging the shaft or cooling fins.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 10 лет назад
Thank you : ) I have jaw pullers but i didn't even tried it because of the plastic cage where the copper race is fit on. The grinder was the less risky here. If i broke the plastic cage it was done for the alternator and the car was not able to run the monday morning....
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 10 лет назад
michaelovitch, I think you are talking about the Alternator’s Slip Ring (with the copper rings that the brushes slide on). Those are replaceable too and available at most auto parts stores fairly inexpensively. Judging from the grooves worn into yours by the brushes, you will need to replace the slip ring in the next year or two.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 10 лет назад
Pet Rock's Garage Yep the "slip ring". Thank you : ) this one is only 50 000 kilometers and it should last the same. at least the old ones without the plastic cage did. I didn't know it was replaceable. Here peoples do not even touch the inside of the alternators,i don't even know where to buy parts like this one. I don't know where you are but here they just replace them and dump the "old". peoples are not mechanical work innclined....

@@richfuller, yeah, the deposit is the cost of the tool. You get your money back when you return it on time. But if you don't return it they are still OK because it counts as a sale for them. They don't lose money either way.

Best quality, HD video camera views I have seen. A tripod-mounted camera cannot be used everywhere, but certainly helped here. Your removal of the bearing with an angle grinder shows both care and practice, especially the inner race of the bearing. Continuous sound and screen captions for important points helped orient us, but more caption detail on some parts might help-- especially on the heating and cooling of the aluminum housing. Or, perhaps something as simple and direct as your voice, describing the process in general terms and adding detail, as you go..
@narancs5
@narancs5 4 года назад
For those people, who happen to not have an angle grinder: *Use a bearing puller.* Also it is much easier to remove the pulley nut, if you pull the alternator apart, then put the rotor into a vice.
@richfuller
@richfuller Год назад
I was totally going to make the same suggestions as someone who has a vice and a bearing puller>$20. Vs potentially destroying your alternator with $70 grinder which I have no need for. LOL

Not sure why people are hating on this, it's a fun little video (even though I don't plan to do this because it's not worth my time). As far as melting the winding varnish or deforming the housing....right now you have a bad alternator and if it's doesn't work out then you have a bad alternator. Lol

how do you know what bearings you need to buy?
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch Год назад
It's typed on the bearing itself,on its flank. It looks like a number as : 6200 2 rs The first group of number is the bearing identity,wich corrspond to its dimensions. The number alone is the number of seals ,you sometimes have no seal,one ,or two seals. The letters are the type of seal,polymer,steel,or else. You may have specific info then like the letter "C" or something else wich indictates that it's a low friction higher tomerances bearing. You will not have that on an alternator,it's very standard and simple. You will have two bearinsg,certainly from a different size.

A good and well executed video. As the title states, it doesn't require any fancy tools, although you could run the risk of damage from that grinder. I would personally use pullers and press tools. But, a very good video.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 8 лет назад
Thank you : ) the cage,where the copper race is ,is made of plastic...it would be really dangerous to use a puller here. Those units are not supposed to be rebuilt like i did.

I've repaired a good few alternators and I've never known a rear bearing to require replacement. Front bearings can usually be levered off with a pair of small pry bars as they are only pressed on, not shrunk-on. A Chinese generic bearing used to only cost 50p so even after paying for Loctite for the screws there is a huge saving over buying a Service Exchange unit. Allegedly some of those Chinese bearings are made on the same production line as the top brands but they don't put a trademark on them.

6 years late... Been working on my alternator all night. Front bearing is very noisy with a little play. Rear bearing has a very minor amount of noise and a tiny bit of play, but probably has some time left. Vehicle is 22 years old on original alternator 135K miles. Now, I'm having a terrible time getting the rear bearing off the shaft. I cut into it and most of the grease was gone and what little was there was dried up solid and dirty. So, I wouldn't say rear bearings never go bad.

When you don't have an inductive bearing heater cook one up,lol. I am an industrial maintenance technician and we have an inductive bearing heater. It is for putting the inner race of the bearing back on the shaft. You only have about 30 seconds once you remove the bearing from the heater to get it on the shaft in the right place before it cools and locks on the shaft. If it cools on the shaft in the wrong place its do over time. Nice job on that alternator!! Improvising at its finest! Another way to heat a bearing is get cooking/automotive oil and a thermometer and heat the oil with the bearing submerged in the oil.

Parts supplier must love people like this. The bearing is bad buy an entire new alternator. Well I've seen people buying an entire new transmission shaft because one rubber boot was gone. :o) As a former mechanic I say these are my "ideal" clients. Literally pay 5x/10x more for an alternator that in most case scenarios outlives the car itself. Consumer society to it's best. LOL :-)

Very informative video on what bearings look like in the alternator and how to replace it. I think the bearings in my alternator were causing squeaky sound and one of reasons alternator is weak and draining the battery. I don't have all the tools that you have to change it and ordered a re manufactured Bosch alternator for 85 bucks with free shipping from California shipped to New York and should arrive today or Monday. I get updated text messages to let me know where along the way the alternator is on route with USPS. Although your videos are very informative, it is like watching a silent movie and any narration you make before and after the procedure would help as viewers can hear your reasoning. You obviously know a real lot! The stuff in between when you fast forward because takes time to remove so understood not to talk. Thanks.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 9 лет назад
Thanks to you : ) I hope you will can solve your drained battery problem. I don't think your alternator is directly in cause ,unless it do not charge your battery anymore. Maybe you have an accessory sucking juice all the time. Is the battery at 12.6 volts after charging it ? Did you check the voltage on battery, engine running, to see if the alternator is charging ? You can use a multimeter inline between the positive post of the battery and the positive cable key off to mesure if something is sucking juice.

Unlikely you're still reading comments, but, thank you for this video. Commentators speak of the ease of buying a new/rebuilt alternator. But, not so easy when your 'alternator' is a 1959 Mercedes dc generator, .... with no electric/machine shop within reach to press off seized bearings. ..... & said refurbished generator online at premium $$$.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 6 лет назад
Buying is easy when you have the money,or the part... Just cut the bearings,or break them by pressing the outer race in a vice,or grinding a little trench in the inner race,and snapping it in half with ta chizel. Tap the new in place,by the inner race ,if you install on a shaft,or the outer race if you install in a bore. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L5_4u5M3Ct8.html You have a 300 sl right ? www.bosch-classic.com/media/bosch_classic/teile_1/nachfertigungen/motor_2/generator/Mini-Katalog__Generator.pdf www.bosch-classic.com/en/internet/bosch_classic/produkte/motor_1/gleichstromgenerator/gleichstromgenerator___mit_teaser_1.html

@vraymond108
@vraymond108 7 лет назад
Yes, I have a Balmar 24v alternator. I bought the rebuild kit in case I ever do it away from shore. It can become a life and death situation if the alternator bearings suddenly pack up while motoring near the shore because the alternator and water pump are on the same belt. Should be two different belts.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 7 лет назад
wow,that's weird. i agree it should be two different belts ,like you say,on a boat,it can be really dangerous... Can't you use a double pulley to separate the two ,with two belts ? What engine is that ?
@vraymond108
@vraymond108 7 лет назад
It is a Perkins 4-236. I could set up a double pulley system but will require some design work.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 7 лет назад
If you have this set up,you can just install a smaller belt for the water pump alone ,and the use the current alternator location to install a simple belt tensionner. you can install the alternator on the same actual spot but,slightly moved forward on the engine length to align with the second belt. You need cranckshaft pulley with room for two belts however. www.perkins.com/content/dam/wwwperkins/28711.2.jpeg?$cc-s$ Seen it's a common engine mounted on a lot of equipment,i'm sure you can do that quite "easily".

Yeah sure OEM all the way, preferably brand new not reconditioned. 300€ to 500€, depending on make and model, instead of 10€ in bearings and 1/2 to 1 hour labor. LOL :-)

$5 bearings vs. $300-500 for a replacement alternator?! Is daddy paying your car maintenance bills? Its a very simple DIY, and a very cost effective fix. The tools are a one time investment. I would've done the bushings too while I was in there.
@beangie
@beangie 7 лет назад
There were a time when Parts were so scarce in some places that everything had to be fixed not changed, now most ppl will just buy a new one and that's it, but recycling nowadays due to pollution it's the way to go, reuse and renew your stuff , plus it's cheaper, and all you need is some time, and some tools. Reuse, renew, and recycle!.

What are you doing for the first few seconds starting at 04:08 ? It appears you're cutting into the bearing to get it off easier but a few seconds in around 04:14 it appears you might be sharpening or polishing the rotors on the unit? Or is that just an optical illusion

One of these days I'll have to take mine apart, I think the brushes have seen better days.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 10 лет назад
Very important on fuel injection cars.... On my car the brushes are kaput too. It's a bosch unit on my volvo with a separate regulator like here but bolted on the outside of the alternator,not under a shield like here. The old ones are a bit bigger but easier on maintenance and can be easily rebuilt. The copper contact/race is at least 2 times thicker and not inside a plastic pressed cage like here.... I thought i wouldn't be able to remove the inner race of the bearing on this one because of the fear to destroy the plastic cage = / I guess it's easier to buy a new one for garages owners than to rebuild them. Plastic era sucks.....

Smart putting bearing housing in oven and putting the armature in freezer. An good way to get the other bearing easily on the armature shaft is get a pot and put cooking oil in it and put it on a stove burner, drop the bearing in it and heat the oil so the inner bearing race will expand and then remove it and it will slide right on to the shaft.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 3 года назад
Did you try with sealed bearings ?
@8bert9
@8bert9 3 года назад
@@michaelovitch Yes, I have used it for all types of bearings. At work I use a bearing heater which is a device that uses induction to heat the bearing. At home I have used either the stove method or use a bucket with oil in it to submerge the bearing and apply heat to the metal bucket with a propane torch. All that matters is that you get the inner race hot enough to expand enough to get it on a shaft. You have to be quick because you don't want it cooling down before you get it to the correct position on the shaft.

What did this alternator come off? Looks exactly like my Bosch on my mercedes. And where did you find the bearing specs? My alternator doesn't whine, but it feels scratchy when you spin it with or without the regulator attached. W203 Chassis.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 5 лет назад
From a renault 21. The bearings specs are on the bearing themselves as a number/letter combination. You can also find them websites selling parts for your car,from mercedes itself or simply a parts shop.
@ranz9688
@ranz9688 7 лет назад
It looks not too hard to do the job. However, the alternator bearings are too expensive. I checked amazon, advance auto parts, and ebay. The bigger one is cost about 25. Nowhere to find the smaller one. How much did you pay for the two bearings and where did you get them from? Thank you!

@jfgauthier1

Also, how did you determine the size you needed etc? Did you do this before taking off the alternator, or did you take it off, disassemble it, measure and then order?
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 8 лет назад
+Jean-Francois Gauthier You can : -disassemble it and look at the reference on the bearing itself.(it's a standard number like 6200 zz or zs with the brand just before (nsk skf nsr etc....) -ask in an auto parts store the references of them. I disassemble it, look at the references on the bearings ,and buy them ,or order them. they are often the same sizes in a lot of alternators.

Thanks for that video! It helped me immensely. I just replaced my bearings and there is the slightest grind noise when spinning the pulley by hand. Its so slight that its more of a grindy whisper noise really. Is that normal or should the new bearings be silent?
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 9 лет назад
rmandingo357 Thank you ! New bearings are silent,to test them by hand before to install them is a good idea. In your application i'm pretty sure the noise come from the brushes rubbing on the copper race : ) You can try again with the regulator/rectifier removed,you certainly will hear nothing anymore : )

Do you really need to change both bearings? Only the first one is on significant load (the belt tension). The back bearing just rides along.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 2 года назад
When the first one is worn out,the other is taking load too,their alignement not being good anymore. The alternator shaft is acting as a lever on the second bearing then. Generally one is more worn out than the other,yes.

I have a question, "When you see white Sparks coming out from your alternator, what does that mean??! And I'm hearing a screeching noise from that area too. I have a new belt already and one new pulley for the belt
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 4 года назад
Worn out brushes can cause sparks,because the contact is not good enough,so electricity jump from the rotor to the end of the brushes. worn bearings could cause sparks ,but you would hear an horrible sound since quite some time,they wear out quite slowly. Check if there is some play on the alternator shaft,and if it's rotatting easily by hand without the belt on it.

Nice, just did mine, all for angle grinding the inner bearing ring off, have used pullers before where you could only get to the outer ring and ended up having to do this anyway as they left it behind! That alternator looks just like the one I have, the only problem is, I wish my back bearing stayed in the house like yours did. What’s your recommendation for getting it off the shaft without using a cutting tool? I have a small bearing puller and pulled the front one off with absolutely no problem at all, but the back one, it won’t fit inside enough to grab it. Everything always goes easy until that one thing. I’m sure that speaks for everyone else.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 6 лет назад
You can just tap it with a chisel to push it towards the end of the shaft. Vibrations will make it move,the bearing races are very hard.
@julianmcalister3247
@julianmcalister3247 6 лет назад
I appreciate your response. I was going to write back and tell you I got it right after. What I did and this might help someone else as well. I actually had the bearings mixed up as far as front and back. It was the front I was having trouble with. I put the housing back on, put the 4 screws back in the plate, and push the shaft out of the bearing. That left the bearing in the housing to push out with my fingers. The bearing puller saved me lots of time and trouble for sure.
