Alternator welder wiring and how to make it weld!!

I've had lots and lots of questions about this alternator welder I built from years ago. I also made a newer video on my channel where I rebuilt it after sitting not being used for years. And I did it using a small (5hp) honda engine and it welded fine. Anyhow, I've put a link to a similar leece neville alternator thats on eby right now. You are gonna wanna buy a used one because new ones can run well over 1000.00 bucks. I will leave a link to the listing:

For some reason, I cant back out and copy the link to my previous video of the honda alternator welder. But I did look it up on my phone and I uploaded it october of 2023. Sorry about not being able to post 2 different links. Still learning the computer stuff...haha

a variac voltage aduster has alot more windings. it will likely give infinite adjustment. that is a variac in a cruder form.

Hi, I'm not exactly sure on how to do this. I've never opened an alternator and don't understand how they work. I have a 160 amp, externally regulated alternator that I mounted on my engine. It is a stand-alone for welding only with no regulator. The stock alternator is still in place and will do the battery charging. From what I gather, all I have to do is put 12v to one of the two field wires and the other to ground. Then the negative for welding is the body of the alternator and the positive is off the post that previously went to the battery. Is this correct. Thank you.

I believe that is correct. I'd have to go back and look at my video, but I believe that's the way mine is wired

There's a ton of videos on yt about wiring these. Problem is there's lots of different types of alternators. They pretty much all can weld, they just go about getting there a little different.

@@oldironfinder Yep, I just started looking into it and the variations are what was throwing me. I'll give it a shot once I get the new belt in place. I'll post back with the results, 'cause if this works, it is cake. No need to spend the $1500 on Premier!

I couldn't agree more. I really enjoy making stuff myself and not having to buy unless necessary. Plus, it's alot more fun!! And rewarding when what you build actually works! Just keep it up and you'll get there.

@old iron finder Wow man so glad I found your video about the homemade welder you made 5 years ago! I have some questions tho, for you could you use a truck alternator and still be able to weld or would that not work? Also what is the alternator you are using actually from? Thanks!

Yes you can use a truck alternator. You could use almost any alternator for that fact, but this leece neville is literally the easiest to convert to a welder. Snip a few wires and its ready to weld. That is assuming the diodes are good. And I believe the alternator I used in the video came off a peterbilt or some other large truck

And on the last one, I had a different pulley setup that worked alot better. This one is OK for small thin stuff

yup. different pulley .. differet rpm of alt. hmmm. drimmel a key way on the shaft to make pulley swapping easy?? allows you not to have to rev. engine higher. though likely only benefit for large projects where you will stick with same volt amp for hours.

Maybe. I wonder if one of those torque convertor clutches would work with a handle throttle? Might be work looking into. You cam get those cheap on ebay
